Carlos and his team did an incredible job assembling 7 desks/desk accessories for our office. We requested their services on short notice, but they arrived quickly and provided quality service. I was very impressed with how fast each furniture item was assembled and how well they worked as a team lifting the heavy furniture. Thank you!

Great service! They arrived right on time, were friendly, and took care of our problem, which was moving a very large and heavy cabinet in a confined area.

My roommate and I needed help moving our 2 bedroom apartment with in 4-5 day notice. Patrick contacted me right away saying he was available for the job! He responded quickly to all my question before I hired him, and was very clear about the work he would do. He and his partner worked quickly and took great care of our things. They were able to fit everything in the truck we rented despite it being a little smaller than expected. They also moved all that we asked them to into two different homes in two different locations in the South Bay. They made our moving experience smooth and less stressful than I imagined!! I'll definitely being hiring Patrick again if I ever need heavy lifting and moving help.

Steve and Joe took on a tough job of moving us down two flights of stairs and lost no time making it happen. We were amazed at their speed and agility whether handling large heavy furniture or many boxes. We went to a storage unit a mile from the house and they emptied that in record time. The drive time to our new house almost an hour away they did in an hour and 15 minutes and we had budgeted an hour and a half or so. Joe seemed to remember exactly where all our furniture was in our apartment so when we got to the house he was making suggestions and gently reminding us where it should be placed. Always nice to have some humor to take the stress out of the day. Steve had everything calculated professionally and explained it to me from the moment they came to our door to the last box in our house. If you're looking for professionals and value Albion Moving should be your choice too! Remember to tip well, too. These guys are hard workers. Cheers!

Spoke to Nancy and Mike, they were very kind to accommodate us even on their very busy schedule. As the move was local and not very huge all we needed was a truck and 3 helpers who managed to put all the furniture in blankets and belongings in boxes from one location to the other. The deal involved just placing the heavy furniture in the new house and leaving the boxes for us to manage. Great Work and Deal.

I hired their moving and handyman service when my movers cancelled in a last min. Harp and his team came with 4 movers and truck. They moved my heavy antique armoire, very heavy Marbel dinning tanks top and pianos from 6th floor apt to my 3rd floor unit. They also helped in mounting Tv and shelves at new place. Highly professional and they know what are they doing.

Although they showed up a bit late (as is expected with SF traffic), Jeff and Jesus were amazing. They were so quick with unpacking our cars and U-Haul, they delicately handled all fragile furniture and boxes, and they were enjoyable to work with! We don't have an elevator and required lifters to move heavy furniture up one flight of stairs, along with around 30 boxes of stuff. They were able to get all the furniture up. HUGE BONUS: we had a piece arrive from Restoration Hardware at the same time we were unpacking. Jeff and Jesus actually ended up helping the three guys RH had sent to get our piece moved in. It was really cool to see them volunteer their time and strength to help us get all our furniture in. **We're already set on using these guys for any move we ever have to do again in the Bay area.

I would absolutely recommend Felix to anyone looking to hire a mover! I was able to schedule with him on very short notice (for the next day, actually), and he responded to my texts and phone calls promptly. On the day of the move, he did a phenomenal job helping me pick up several pieces of furniture around the city- he arrived early, wrapped each piece carefully, and did all of the heavy lifting with a smile. As an added bonus, he even assembled some of my furniture for me at no cost. Thank you Felix, for a job very well done and for being a great conversationalist while we were stuck in city traffic!

Brian did a office remodeling for me including demolition of a whole room, removing many built-in cabinets, rewiring, and finishing new walls. He mostly worked alone, but his work was meticulous. Brian is one of very very few contractors whom I can actually trust. (I have built a 8,000 s.f. house among other building projects, so I have experience with many contractors.) Brian will do what he promised, at the price he promised, within the time frame he promised. Highly recommended for all remodeling work. Thank you, Brian, for a job well done.

Cindy arrived with her husband and moved 9 appliances from a duplex to the driveway where they could be picked up when sold. She is a petite woman and I thought two big fellows would have been able to lower the heavier items down the step more gently. However, they completed the job in less than the 2 hour minimum.

ML Movers were professional, on-time, and efficient movers. Working with Miguel was actually delightful. From the moment I started my project on thumbtack, Miguel was incredibly responsive. His quote was very straightforward and easy to understand. He runs his business professionally, sending the contract, insurance and other legal documents via DocuSign before the move. He was also able to accommodate my request for a move on a very short notice (less then 7 days from first speaking to Miguel to the move date). He and his team of two movers arrived 5min early and since I had packed a good amount of items they were able to finish packing and package up my furniture, move and reassemble my furniture in 2.5 hours (my move was only 2 miles away). His team was even able to move my really heavy couch up 2 flights of stairs. He wrapped up with a final checklist review and was on his way. He also gave me a discount for paying cash. Overall would highly recommend Miguel and ML Movers!!

Those are the two words that come to my mind about this company; fast and perfect. They helped my family of four to move out and have a really pleasant and painless movement. Their work was very professional and the work was duly completed in time. And there isn’t moving that is easy, especially when you have to lift heavy stuff like kitchen tables. Trust me it was done in a weekend and things got driven to the new location in California within a week of them starting our work. So all I can say I am very impressed with American Choice Van Lines.

We were moving from a 1 bedroom Unit to a 2 bedroom Unit in the same Apartment Complex. The movers arrived at our Unit early. I asked them to wait as we had agreed they would start at a certain time - they waited with no problem. We had several boxes in the Unit that were unorganized and several items that still needed to be packed in boxes. The Movers helped organize and loaded those boxes before they moved the furniture and other heavy items. All of our furniture, boxes and other heavy items fit in the 24' truck - The Movers only had to make 1 trip. Most of their time was used organizing and loading boxes on the truck. If I need moving services in the future, I will call Firstfruits Moving again!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

    • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
    • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
    • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
    • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
    • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
