Clear communication from Joyee and his math tutor. They made the process easy and were helpful about scheduling tutoring times and dates. I'd also recommend them for college and scholarship planning.

It was a simple job. Six grade math. Most tutors either gave us the runaround or just didn't call us back. Eric at elite made sure we were satisfied from the first free trial to the session before my daughters test. Very well done

My daughter had a “D” in AP Calculus when she started to work with Ahmed. He had to reteach foundational concepts and within 2 1/2 months she has a chance to earn an “A” for the semester. Ahmed is a patient, highly knowledgeable, effective teacher. I would wholeheartedly recommend him as a tutor. We were so impressed with his results, we have him tutoring my younger daughter as well!

I am a Junior in highschool and catherine has been helping me with math for years now. She is very patient and fun to work with. To be honest math is not my favorite subject, however working with Catherine Brittingham made math fun for me. She made me a more confident math student due to her many hours of practise with me. We did my homework and extra problems she assigned that helped me fully understand whatever topic i was learning. I would highly recommend her tutoring to anyone willing to work hard to get the grade of their dreams in math, because with catherine that A that seems to be out of your reach can easily be achieved, and it doesnt need to be a painful proccess.

Moses tutored our son through high school in math and sciences. he was extremely accommodating with our son's intense varsity golf schedule and was able to meet at all hours at libraries, & university libraries during mid terms and finals and of course at our home. Moses' demeanor is consistent as are his teaching techniques. Our son was privileged to have Moses' help and our family is grateful to have known him. Thank you Moses, you are the best!!

Chi Yu changed my son's outlook on Algebra. He is very hardworking, dedicated, yet fun and can relate to my pre-teen. My son was not too keen on the idea of having a math tutor but he really enjoyed his time with Chi while learning math. I cannot recommend Chi more.

Khoa is an excellent tutor for any age range. I'm 36 years and a returning student. Years after finishing my degree I decided to go back to tackle Math courses that I shied away from because my degree course work didn't require the higher level math. Khoa specifically tutored me on College Algebra and I was able to get a great algebra refresher to continue on the path of achieving my goals. He is an excellent tutor. He has the experience and the patience coupled with the knowledge. I recommend his tutoring service for all age ranges!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

      • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
      • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
