I contacted numerous moving companies before my move and MGB Relocations had one of the lowest quotes, but you would never know it from the quality of service they provide. Mario and his team were fantastic! They were prompt, courteous, hard-working, and extremely careful with our belongings and home. Mario communicated clearly before and during the entire process. We had a fairly complicated move, with multiple pick-up locations, two pianos, and a LOT of stuff. Mario and his team were never phased--they took everything in stride and maintained great attitudes. I will definitely use MGB Relocations in the future if I move again and I highly recommend this company!

Needed A LOT of packing up in a room full of collectibles & various items. Both gentlemen went above and beyond to assist in getting this huge project completed. They were very polite and accommodating. They were also conciensious in not leaving the door open to avoid a pet from possibly getting out. This was a huge inconvenience for them, I'm sure. This job took place in a two story unit.... Countless trips up & down stairs with heavy loads without any complaining. No items were damaged/broken by the end of the days job. They were on time. Great communication. Very accurate with estimates and client expectations from their services provided. Today included: packing, organizing, moving, and making sure that all special instructions with regard to certain things were addressed and handled efficiently. I have already booked them again for this coming week to assemble furniture as well. This business has certain individuals that excel in various areas of detailed work needs. I appreciated this a lot. This whole project was a BIG undertaking and they've received the highest praise I can honestly give for the services rendered thus far. I would highly recommend their services.

Larry is great!!! He and his son helped my parents move their small 1 bedroom apartment over this past weekend in 90 -100 degree weather. He delivered as promised and was extremely professional. He treated my folks and their belongings with respect and care. He also showed up on time; started quickly and got the job done quicker than expected. His rates are very reasonable for local moves. I have never had to hire movers before - always got family or friends to pitch in. So needless to say I was somewhat worried after hearing some bad stories about moving companies. However, I would definitely hire Larry again for my next move. Thanks again to Larry's Quality Moving!!!

They were super quick to respond, and were understanding when we had a potential last minute schedule change. Movers showed up on time and were very professional - packing and moving our delicate furniture very safely and quickly. They had to carry heavy boxes and furniture down 1 flight of stairs, and at our new place, up 3 flights in some instances. These guys were excellent and professional, and nothing was damaged during the move. I highly recommend them and would use them again for any future moves.

We booked Alex very last minute because another moving company bailed on us at 9:30pm the day prior to move date. He gave us a very fair and reasonable price and his crew went ABOVE AND BEYOND our expectations. We definitely plan on using them again when it comes time to move our baby grand piano and HIGHLY recommend their services to all!!

Dave Harkins did a fantastic one-man job of moving our piano from one room to another. He was careful and no mishaps occurred as the heavy piano was expertly perched onto his dolly and moved across wood flooring onto an uneven tile flooring surface and placed in its new location. I would absolutely hire Dave in the future for any kind of job requiring the moving of heavy or awkward items. As a bonus, he's just a nice guy and was right on time as agreed.

Eric and his team did an amazing job helping us move! I would double this rating as they moved 2 houses for us. They treated all of our stuff as if it was their own, carefully padding and wrapping items for protection. I asked many friends for a recommendation for movers, nobody had a good enough experience to give me one!! Now, I have a moving company to recommend!! I will use Spend Less For Movers for all my future moving needs!!

My experience with Mike &Shaw Packing and Moving has been Great! They removed the the stress, which is commonly associates with moving. My move was unique because of the distance which was over 400miles one way. Mike and Shaw Packing and Moving company went above and beyond for me and completed the move in a single day. Customer service is paramount and they deliver results. I've used moving companies in the past but never experienced moving like this before. I highly recommend Mike and Shaw Packing and Moving company for any move you may have. They will cater to your needs.

These guys are fantastic. Extremely professional and efficient and the best value bar none from any moving company I've found in Los Angeles. I won't be using anyone else from here on out. Moved two couches for me up a trick flight of stairs at an impossible angle to my living room.

Antonio did such a great job! He works very fast, he has a great sense of logic on how to pack and un-pack the moving truck, and he and his employee were extremely careful and respectful of all the items they were moving. Prompt and considerate communication. The price is great for the service provided! I've already hired him twice and will be hiring for a third time.

We moved three times in the last 1.5 tears. Safe N Fast Movers were fair in price and gave us excellent movers. They take care of your stuff and move carefully and efficient. They were fast with their quote and had a perfect time spot for me. I highly recommend them. Don't make the same mistake we did last time and use Cheap movers (probably with no license). Go for professional company. For Safe N Fast, there were only 3 men and they did a much better job in faster time than 4 men from other company. Ed and his team were awesome, I just can’t stress this enough. They were quick and helpful, with packing and moving. One of our new neighbors asked about a good moving company and we recommended Safe N Fast. She said she will book them soon. PS: You can thank me later guys😉. I definitely recommend Safe N Fast to friends and family.

Overall, our experience with K Moving went very well, which made up for the fact that they did not arrive on time. I appreciated that they did notify us that they were going to be late. It was clear by how they packed the moving truck that they knew their profession well. Kay and his team were all very nice and professional. They kept us informed of the status of the move and where they were at as far as time that had passed for the move since the rate was hourly; and they obtained our authorization for any items to be moved that might put us over the planned time. There were no surprises when it came to the price, which was appreciated. I would use K Movers again and would also recommend them.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
