I can't even begin to say how wonderful these people are. I would rate them a 10 out of 5! The administrative side is very friendly and super quick to respond. The investigators are not only great at their job, they're compassionate and as caring as can be. Instead of crying through my experience, they had me laughing and made the painful part so much easier to bear. Their results were quick and they surprised me at how efficient they are. I hired them on Wednesday and got the info I needed by Saturday. Their pricing is reasonable - I am on a strict budget and they were able to work within it and still get me results. As you can see, I recommend them whole heartedly.

Steve was investigator on our case. Steve is very detailed and built the evidence which eventually got our case dismissed. I'm obviously very happy with Steve and his performance and timeliness of dealing with the data on our case was very good.

Kevin was responsive, knowledgeable and experienced which is why I hired him for a very sensitive and difficult personal service in a stressful case. With his assistance we were able to get the person served without any drama. It went smoothly and was done quickly. I enthusiastically endorse Kevin and will definitely keep his number in my speed dial for any investigative or service work.

We recently contacted Bernie Morton in hopes of finding a lost loved one. Though we were unable to accomplish our mission, Bernie went above and beyond our expectations. He always kept us informed along the way so we never had to wonder what was going on, always in a timely manner. He was kind, courteous and very thoughtful of our feelings. There is really nothing we would have changed about our experience! He was able to give us the peace we had been looking for. We would definitely use him again if needed and highly recommend him!

I am extremely pleased with the service I was provided and plan on referring her to everyone I know. She is also knowledgeable and walked me through her process. She was also able to complete my mailings and file my Notiice. (Add'l cost for mailings but so worth it) She made this process simple! I almost hired someone else and so happy I did not! It was a blessing in disguise! Thanks again,

I was involved in a lawsuit and needed a private investigator and came across Jim's website on the internet back in 2009. I had called a few investigators before contacting Jim and were shocked at the prices and it just didn't seam like they cared. Before hiring Jim we spoke and he told me about his back ground and how he used to find missing children and how he helped locate people in other countries, which showed me he cared and he had contacts. I needed Jim to find assets of someone who owed me a huge judgement and because of that he was not only able to locate bank accounts but he also located homes and other really good information I was able to pass onto my attorney. Jim's prices are affordable and he really cares and because of that I can call him a friend. So if you'r looking for a fantastic investigator that gets results call him you won't be disappointed.

I had hired the sheriff's department and to process servers to try to serve my ex-wife divorce papers. She wouldn't open the door and they were unsuccessful. After searching Google for the best process server in Sacramento I called Lance Casey and Associates. His price wasn't the cheapest but after sitting outside of her house for hours he was able to serve her. I highly recommend Lance Casey and Associates to serve your legal documents.

I have worked with Mr. Sanchez for many years. Mr. Sanchez is a skilled investigator and his vast experience will guarantee a quality work product. His experience will often reduce the hours needed to complete your case and reduce the end cost to the client. If your case involves the need for speaking Spanish, Mr. Sanchez is fluent in Spanish and you will save the cost of an interpreter. Mr. Sanchez is very trustworthy and you can be certain your case will remain confidential. Mr. Sanchez has my highest recommendation. Best regards, Robert Hessee Hessee & Associates Investigative Services

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a private investigator do?

First and foremost, good private investigators follow laws. Unlike on TV, they don’t break in windows or hack into hospital computer systems to get you intel. When you hire a private investigator, you’re hiring a professional to gather facts and find information for you. Although they can’t obtain certain information (such as health records), they do have access to information that most civilians do not. Often private investigators are hired to perform surveillance or background checks or investigate cases such as adultery, child custody, missing persons, hidden assets, or debugging, and theft or other crimes.

Private investigators can be hired to interview people and provide that information to the client, perform photo or video surveillance, monitor activity at a location where you suspect criminal activities or questionable behavior, track a person’s movements, find missing people, do deep-dive background checks, and more. Private investigation can be helpful if you’re trying to get a court order but need evidence. Private investigators can also help find birth parents. Nationally, the average price range for private investigation is $70-$210 per hour.

What does a private investigator cost?

Private investigation isn’t just for blockbuster action movies. Hiring a private investigator can help in all kinds of situations ranging from finding a birth parent to improving personal security. Nationally, the average price range for private investigation is $70-$210, although pricing often hovers between $40 and $100 depending on the complexity of the services you need. Where you live in the country will affect your costs for private investigation; larger cities have higher business overhead and a higher cost of living, which in turn means higher service rates. The complexity of your case can also affect cost. A basic background check may have a flat rate, while hiring a private investigator to help with your child custody case may require more legwork and research, and therefore cost more. Some private investigators work on retainer. A retainer is essentially a nonrefundable deposit you pay to the professional — meaning you have retained their services — who then works against that amount. Here are some examples of average private investigation costs:

  • Hourly rate: $60-$70; costs can vary based on current fuel prices.
  • Flat rate: $100 for comprehensive background investigation services.
  • Retainer: $1,500 minimum retainer required by some pros before starting work.
