We moved from Carlsbad to Carmel Valley in one day. MGB movers were excellent. They arrived on time and worked very hard. They were extremely pleasant and delivered all of our belongings (including a baby grand piano) undamaged. They did not have any hidden fees. The final cost was very reasonable and was exactly what we were expecting. We are currently renting while we find the right house but when we move we will definitely use MGB relocations again.

Frank responded to my request right away. I chose Frank due to his proximity to me and his lower cost compared to other movers. After seeing how hard he worked and the care he took to make sure nothing was damaged, we were happy to pay him more than he asked. He is friendly, a bit chatty (but likeable), professional and he worked hard. Then he drove our large recycle items to the recycle center for us. We would definitely hire Frank again.

Jesse and Frankie were my movers. First, I requested the News Moving Co. with Dalila, and she is very promptly and responsiveness to my messages. I ordered TWO pick up points which were my apartment and my boyfriend apartment. So, it is very helpful for both of us that we have people help us move all our belonging and furniture because we both don't know how to drive, and this is our first time renting an apartment together. Then, we do not actually know how to put all stuffs fit in one car. Jesse and Frankie are very professional, trustful, liable and punctual as I made an appointment. I did not have a chance to check up on them when they moved my stuff into my new apartment. I was surprised by how they organized the boxes. They did an excellent job. I am so happy and grateful that I found News Moving Co. I would recommend News Moving Co. to my friends or others who need help for moving. Thank you for your services! - Fiona

Larry is great!!! He and his son helped my parents move their small 1 bedroom apartment over this past weekend in 90 -100 degree weather. He delivered as promised and was extremely professional. He treated my folks and their belongings with respect and care. He also showed up on time; started quickly and got the job done quicker than expected. His rates are very reasonable for local moves. I have never had to hire movers before - always got family or friends to pitch in. So needless to say I was somewhat worried after hearing some bad stories about moving companies. However, I would definitely hire Larry again for my next move. Thanks again to Larry's Quality Moving!!!

I called them on a thursday evening, and they were on my doorstep the next morning at 8:30 am on the dot. The two gentlemen hustled efficiently and had everything packed up in good time. Nothing was damaged, all furniture was wrapped and protected with care. Unloading was even faster than packing up! Both movers were fast, efficient, kind, and it was the best moving experience I've had.

My two movers showed up and got to work right away. Due to unannounced street repair, they had to park around the corner and didn’t miss a beat. They gladly helped me move some things that were going to charity and not even making the trip. The cost was the cheapest quoted and definitely worth every penny paid. I’ll definitely look to hire them on my next move.

He moved a large, heavy credenza. It was turned down by 3 charitable organizations that wasted my time by assuring me on the phone it would be removed, but each time their movers rejected it. Brett is careful, professional and pleasant.

A special thank you to Mike and Shaw for their kindness and assistance through a difficult transition. They made it much easier. From the company's first point of contact holding my hand and easing my fears and being calm and comforting while the owners and movers went above and beyond my expectations by helping me get everything packed and safely shipped out even after I had to leave the area. I had 2 days to find help and get my things shipped. It was a very stressful event but Mike & Shaw took away a great deal of pressure and for that I am forever grateful and have nothing but warm feelings and good things to say.

Honestly I would recommend these guys over and over again. I called them with a 24 hour notice of moving a 1bdr and they were the only moving company to be able to accommodate my needs. I had Edward and Sergei as my movers and these guys were professional, friendly and hard working and made this whole stressful situation into a more relaxing experience. They handled my belongings with great care and took the time to make sure I understood all that was being done.

Just finished a move with these guys today and it was definitely a great experience.   Pre-move: The manager Li kept in constant contact with me to ensure that the appointment time would be correct.  I verified with them 2 days before and the day before to make sure we were still scheduled.  The day of the move which was today, they showed up exactly on time and prepared which was excellent: During Move:  The movers were great.  They came with all the required equiipment to get their job done quickly and efficiently.  They had dolly's, those 4 wheeled cart things, and a bonus blankets with tape to wrap up your valuable furniture.  They wrapped and protected the couches, TV's and mirrors to ensure that they survive the trip.  THey were also very quick to getting things out of my old apartment and into the movers truck, and finally into my new location. Overall, it was a great experience using these guys for your move.  They actual movers were super friendly and not sketch looking which made me a little more comfortable letting them handle my goods.  They defintely made the moving experience, which is already freaking stressful as it is, very simple and Im glad this whole ordeal is over. Thanks Guys!

I can't say enough good things about Gayle and company! They helped me (basically, they did everything!) move into my house after horrible movers left it all a shambles. I was totally overwhelmed and over emotional and Gayle arrived with a sense of humor and a "nothing shocks me" attitude which was just what I needed. In a short time she had my house completely sorted out, beautifully unpacked, and organized. More importantly, I never felt judged, put upon, or anything other than totally supported. I highly recommend this business. Thank you, Gayle. You're an actual organizational angel.

This was my first experience with having to move a piano. I looked around for movers and got a few quotes. Velazquez was fast at responding and quick to give me a quote. Their prices were excellent! I loved the fact that I was able to schedule the move even while I was out of town. They puntual and kept me informed every step of the way. I will definitely use them again and would highly recommend them!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
