Diane was a wonderful Spanish tutor. Teaching a new language to a hearing impaired student is a challenge to most teachers but she came prepared with different modalities and materials to accommodate my hearing impairment. She was also open to suggestions and incorporated them into the lessons. I learned useful vocabulary as well as traditional language building techniques. Diane was flexible and willing to accommodate scheduling sessions to meet life’s busy days. I would definitely recommend Diane as a Spanish instructor.

Ms. Wendy always comes prepared with a lesson plan. My child enjoys tutoring time with Ms. Wendy as she incorporates my child's interest in her lesson materials. A typical one hour session is productive as it covers grammar, reading comprehension, and writing. Ms. Wendy is very patient and delightful, but she could also be firm when my child doesn't want to do work. We are so glad that we found her to tutor my child.

The individualized attention and lessons my son is receiving have really helped him grow. He's doing better in school, has more confidence and is actually enjoying his tutoring time. I've seen such an improvement in his short time with his tutor. I'm so happy we made this investment.

Marc tutored my son in French for several years while he was studying for the Brevet and the Baccalauréat at the Lycée Français La Pérouse in San Francisco. I doubt that my son could have passed these exams without Marc's help. Besides being a native speaker of French, Marc's training is in language and translation, and so he also knows the mechanics and methods of teaching. He also always strove to make the lessons interesting by introducing different topics and trying various teaching methods. I would recommend Marc unreservedly to anyone looking for a French tutor.

"I contacted Jacqueline for my daughter prior to her student exchange trip to France. She needed to learn the basics of the French language. The lessons with Jacqueline were very informative and fun. Lots of conversation examples from maps and pictures and a little vocabulary. This is the best way to learn a language from someone who is native from there . My daughter really enjoyed the lessons and she felt much more comfortable to leave for Paris. Thank you Jacqueline. I will definitely recommend you to all my Friends."

Real life experience! I have lived in Spain and Mexico and have friends in Argentina, Peru, Bolivia, and in the USA with whom I speak Spanish regularly. So my Spanish isn't just textbook-proper, it's also day-to-day real! I have translated for a music magazine, a comic magazine, a Mayan author, and as part of my own research and work with indigenous peoples, so my knowledge/vocabulary base is very diverse.

I primarily help students learn or develop their piano or clarinet skills. I have enjoyed playing these instruments for almost 12 years and have been fortunate enough to perform all over the United States. Math has a surprising connection to music. As a student of the agricultural sciences, I look forward to sharing my passion for art and math with you.

      About

I'm a high school student who have been having straight A's for two years in a row and experience in playing the piano. I have a great passion for reading and writing, and since I can speak Vietnamese, I can help teach English to Vietnamese people and vice versa as well. Since I'm not a professional, I'm willing to negotiate prices. I'm known by teachers and friends for being responsible, hardworking, and helpful.

      About

Spanish is becoming more and more important with regard to business. Learning Spanish will enable you to better communicate with Spanish speaking employees or coworkers. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to offer your product or service to the 350 million people whose mother tongue is Spanish? In North America, Hispanic consumers are the fastest-growing market segment. As for job opportunities, it certainly wouldn't hurt to have Spanish on your resume. In the United States, knowing Spanish can be particularly helpful if you work in healthcare or education. Increasingly, the building trades are employing more and more Spanish speaking workers. One thing is certain. If you are bilingual, you will be more marketable and have more career choices than your monolingual counterpart. Globalization, with its accompanying free trade agreements, is shrinking the business world, and those who know more than one language will definitely have the edge. Spanish is everywhere. With well over 35 million Spanish speakers in the United States and with over 40% of the population growth being among the Hispanic people, the stage is set for an enormous increase in Spanish usage in the United States. This has sparked a lot of interest among US citizens, a group not particularly known for their multilingualism. This interest will only increase as the Hispanic population of the US approaches 50 million by the year 2015, but it's not only in the US where Spanish is popular, but also in Europe where Spanish is the second most popular second language, after English. With some 400 million speakers, Spanish is the fourth most commonly spoken language in the world. Only Mandarin, English and Hindi have more speakers. If you count only native speakers, Spanish outranks English. Spanish is an official language on four continents and is the mother tongue in 21 countries. The sheer number of Spanish speakers and their rate of growth makes learning Spanish a smart choice.

      About

I am a Spanish and English teacher, and I've been teaching for more than 8 years. I have experience with children and adults too. I use many systems according to each student's abilities and personality.

      About

I am a multilingual language tutor who is able to explain and bridge the language gap that many native English speakers may feel in other language learning environments using their own experience. When the 'light goes on' with language, it makes my work all worth it. I learned Spanish in school (eight years between high school and college) as well as from teenage work trips to Mexico and Costa Rica. Also, I worked in export to Latin America for over a year. The bulk of my language learning of Mandarin was in the US Navy, practically immersed for two years and have studied in China for six weeks in a Beijing school of economics. I am interested in teaching people language for business and pleasure trips, tutoring that will supplement book learning, providing interpretation services both in the US and abroad as well as ad hoc translations into English from Spanish and Chinese.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
