My son would not have passed any of his math classes in the last 4 years of school if it wasn't for the help of Mathman! Nicolas is able to explain math with ease as well as make it fun. I recommend his services to anyone whose child is struggling with this subject as you will not be disappointed!

My son has always felt confident in math but seemed to get bogged down by the small details and mistakes. He really wants to be an engineer. Kingsfield came in and gave a free assessment, which broke down his problem areas and how they related to the majority of his mistakes. As part of his math program, they also worked on his study skills, such as effective note-taking. I saw my son's confidence and enjoyment for school change in just the first few sessions. Over the course of his program, he told me he learned more from his tutoring sessions that he did in his high school math classes.

My daughter had summer homework for her honors English class. Kassandra worked with her and two of her friends once a week throughout the summer. Kasandra worked out a summer lesson plan to make sure they read the book, but more importantly she made sure they fully understood their homework and related the classic literature to modern storytelling they could all understand. They all had a great time working with Kassandra and and enjoyed learning their summer work. I highly recommend Something Old Something New Tutoring.

My daughter does not enjoy math. This year, as a freshman, she was given an unusual math class (Algebra) where the lesson is to be learned at home via YouTube videos and the homework would be done in class. In theory it sounds like a great idea, however, if you’re partially through a lesson plan and you have a question or if you are confused it’s very hard to continue. Especially in math. Lisa has been my daughters tutor for most of this school year and some of the last school year. She is wonderful!! She connects with the kids so well, she is patient and explains things in a way my child understands. My daughter truly enjoys working with her and it’s nice having her come to our house. As a parent, I appreciate her competitive prices and her flexibility. We’ve tried other places – Lisa is far away the best. My daughter was really struggling. Lisa was the missing link in getting her and keeping her up to speed. I would recommend Lisa to any parent looking for a math tutor for their child.

Jennifer Wagner tutored my daughter in Algebra and Algebra 2 over 2 school years. She is an excellent tutor and I recommend her without hesitation. Jennifer presented math in a non-threatening way that enabled my daughter to learn and progress in ways she had never been able to in the classroom. Most regular classroom teachers only know one way to teach, and math is not a one-size-fits-all subject. I know that many students struggling with math also have severe confidence problems when it comes to math, which further hinders their progress. Jennifer not only understands all that, but she finds a way to present the material without making the student feel like they are somehow inadequate. Jennifer Wagner is an outstanding tutor! You will never regret having her work with your student!

As a student of the agricultural sciences, I look forward to sharing my passion for art and math with you.

        About

Spanish is becoming more and more important with regard to business. Learning Spanish will enable you to better communicate with Spanish speaking employees or coworkers. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to offer your product or service to the 350 million people whose mother tongue is Spanish? In North America, Hispanic consumers are the fastest-growing market segment. As for job opportunities, it certainly wouldn't hurt to have Spanish on your resume. In the United States, knowing Spanish can be particularly helpful if you work in healthcare or education. Increasingly, the building trades are employing more and more Spanish speaking workers. One thing is certain. If you are bilingual, you will be more marketable and have more career choices than your monolingual counterpart. Globalization, with its accompanying free trade agreements, is shrinking the business world, and those who know more than one language will definitely have the edge. Spanish is everywhere. With well over 35 million Spanish speakers in the United States and with over 40% of the population growth being among the Hispanic people, the stage is set for an enormous increase in Spanish usage in the United States. This has sparked a lot of interest among US citizens, a group not particularly known for their multilingualism. This interest will only increase as the Hispanic population of the US approaches 50 million by the year 2015, but it's not only in the US where Spanish is popular, but also in Europe where Spanish is the second most popular second language, after English. With some 400 million speakers, Spanish is the fourth most commonly spoken language in the world. Only Mandarin, English and Hindi have more speakers. If you count only native speakers, Spanish outranks English. Spanish is an official language on four continents and is the mother tongue in 21 countries. The sheer number of Spanish speakers and their rate of growth makes learning Spanish a smart choice.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

        • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
        • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
