"Well what can I say?! I tried my first two hour massage and Andrey was absolutely amazing. I completely agree with the review that says he has "old soul" hands. I have never had a massage this thorough and fabulous. I have a lot of problems with my neck and back and he addressed every single one of them in a methodical and careful manner. I got the deep massage that I needed without being re-injured. I can honestly say that I have found my masseuse! I won't go to anyone else. He has amazing hands...he truly has a gift that he shares with all of us. Looking forward to my next appointment:) "

"Evangelina was very thorough with her questions and understood my concerns and listened to my needs. I've been having chronic shoulder pain for months now. One session with her and my shoulder feels amazing! It's the best it has felt in so long! She really took the time to work out the knots that had been ailing me. What I also appreciated was when she found the knots, she gave me suggestions on how to alleviate them during my own time. I was overall extremely satisfied with Evangelina and the amazing deep tissue massage, and will definitely be seeing her again soon. And I highly recommend anyone who has tough knots to come see her. She will get them out!"

"Brent is a great therapist and customer sensitive business owner - an all too rare combination. I had experienced incredibly intense and long lasting leg cramps which left me with extremely tight and painful muscles that all but immobilized me. Brent arrived on time and delivered a very effective treatment which gave me more relief than I had anticipated. He applied just the right level of pressure in his deep tissue massage; sufficient as to break down the extreme tightness, but not so much as to cause me too much discomfort. He delivers great therapy and value for money of a kind I've seldom enjoyed."

"Peaceful Healing Massage is absolutely one of the best places I have ever received a massage and I've been to several massage therapists over the years. The therapist, Kaitlin, is very professional, skilled and dedicated in the soothing, medicinal art of massage therapy. She is restorative in her skill set, from Raindrop treatment, to Hot Stone therapy Deep Tissue massage or a relaxation massage. I usually schdule the length of my appointment for an hour and a half and it never seems long enough. Kaitlin always asks, prior to the session, if I have any areas of concern she needs to focus on, if so, she pays special attention to those areas of extra need and manages to complete a full massage from head to toe. The therapy room is lovely, as well as the music that is sure to lull anyone to sleep. Peaceful Healing Massage is just that...peaceful and healing. A definite must, for those looking for the perfect massage!"

"I've been seeing Mark now for about 18 months, and what I appreciate most about his work is that he's continually striving to better his technique, and never walks in offering the same massage from the time before. He's incredible intuitive - he listens, and then knows what and where to work, and then incorporates that into your entire session. As a bigger guy with an active lifestyle, I sometimes need more shoulder and neck work; or sometimes more lower back work if I've been traveling - I always feel when I let him know what I need done that not only will that area be worked on, but it won't mean gypping out on the rest of your massage. He always seems to pack it in and really know how to time out the hour (or 90 minutes!). Lastly, he's just a cool guy. I've been getting massages for 20+ years, and Mark is pretty much the first time I feel like I don't need to be on the search for someone new. "

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a deep tissue full body massage?

A deep tissue full body massage is a form of healing bodywork. At your first massage, your massage therapist will do a brief intake. They will ask you questions about the type of pressure you’d like to receive during your deep tissue massage, any previous massage experience you’ve had, and any injuries or sensitivities you have. You can remain clothed, or the massage therapist will provide draping so that even if you’re not wearing clothes you are always fully covered. Deep tissue massage may be a good option for people with chronic pain or muscle tension. The systematic deep tissue strokes will work to break down any scar tissue or stiff tissues and create ease in your body again. Massage therapists use their hands, forearms, fists and knuckles to knead and stroke your muscles and loosen adhesions. Although deep tissue massage work is intense, it should not be painful, so communicate clearly with your massage therapist so they know if you’re having any discomfort. The national average cost of a deep tissue massage is between $70 and $90.

Do deep tissue massages work?

Deep tissue massage not only feels fabulous, it can provide results. The massage technique targets deeper layers of muscle and your connective tissue. For its ability to stimulate those deeper muscles, deep tissue massage is commonly used during recuperation from sports-related and other injuries, according to the Mayo Clinic. Deep tissue massage has been proved to reduce high blood pressure and a range of other ailments. Deep tissue and other types of massage are frequently used for relieving stress, managing pain, breaking down scar tissue, relieving muscle tension and improving health. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health cites the following as health conditions for which that deep tissue massage can provide relief:

  • Chronic low back pain, chronic neck pain, and osteoarthritis of the knee
  • Labor pains
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Fibromyalgia pain and fatigue
  • Headaches
  • HIV/AIDS

The proper deep tissue massage may also benefit preterm infant health. Cancer patients may experience reduced pain, increased relaxation, and improved mood.

What is the purpose of a deep tissue massage?

There are many reasons to get a deep tissue massage. A deep tissue massage can release adhesions — also known as knots — that are causing painful tension in your muscles. Deep tissue massage can promote healing and ease discomfort related to illnesses such as cancer, chronic headaches, osteoarthritis of the knee, chronic neck or back pain, depression, and more, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. If you have an old sports injury such as shin splints, or a bad back from an old car accident, deep tissue massage can promote healing in your traumatized and scarred soft tissues and get you on the road to recovery. The strokes and techniques used in deep tissue massage work to lengthen soft tissue structures that have stiffened and hardened into knotty adhesions that allow minimal movement. Deep tissue massage can loosen these adhesions so that long-standing scar tissue releases and you can gain more mobility and more freedom from stiffness and pain. And it just feels good. The national average cost of a deep tissue massage is between $70 and $90.

What is the difference between a deep tissue massage and a Swedish massage?

Deep tissue massage and Swedish massage are both forms of therapeutic bodywork. In both modalities, a licensed massage therapist uses strokes administered with their hands or forearms to loosen and relax your muscles and other soft tissue. These releases can promote relaxation, pain relief and wellness.

Deep tissue massage may be an excellent therapeutic choice for people with chronic pain or severe tension in their muscles. The deep tissue massage technique moves below the top layer of muscle and soft tissue to release adhesions in your core muscles. In comparison, the strokes used in Swedish massage focus on loosening and relaxing the top layer of your soft tissues. Swedish massage produces relaxation and well-being, but if you have a long-term injury or back pain that won’t seem to go away, deep tissue massage may be a better option for you. The systematic deep tissue strokes will work to break down any scar tissue or stiff tissues and create ease in your body again.
