Debbie was great giving me options of menus. I ended up ordering off her American menu and it was fantastic. Debbie was there early and helped set up the food. Everyone at the banquet loved the food and asked me who the caterer. I will definitely be thinking of Debbie when planning my next event.

I have been to several events which Taste of the Senses catered. They all have been above and beyond my expectations. The quality and quantity of food surpasses those of other caterers at the events. His menu includes tri-tip, ceviche, and tamales, among other delicious, homemade authentic Mexican fare. Arturo and his crew go to all lengths to adjust to the event and circumstances, whether it is a wedding, a quincianera, or a fundraiser. They are friendly, hard-working, and talented, and I recommend Taste of the Senses highly.

Outstandingly experienced chef. He came to house and gave our 11 year old granddaughter a private cooking lesson. His skills are great with adults as well as kids. We all were invited to watch and boy did we All learn! From the placing of the cutting board and knife skills to the presentation of the gourmet food they prepared together. It was hands on for both chef and granddaughter. It was a great experience for all and we have already been asked by others to pass on his information to them. He is going to be very busy, so, make arrangements now to book him for your events or for your private lesson for a loved one.

David and Cowabunga Barbecue recently catered my wife and I's wedding for 150 people! They did a fantastic job! Many people have told us since how much they enjoyed the Mac and cheese and pulled pork and how it was the best wedding food they have ever had. David is very professional and super easy to deal with which is invaluable when you are planning a wedding and dealing with so many vendors. We used his full service package which was very reasonable for what it was and made our life very easy knowing the food was "handled" Hands down I would use cowabunga bbq again for any event or wedding. 5 stars!

We hired Mimi to cater out daughter's Bat Mitzvah. But what Mimi did was so above and beyond just catering. Mimi's food and presentation of food was delicious and beautiful. But in addition, she turned the party space into a gorgeously decorated space beyond the dreams of our daughter. Mimi was determined to make it the most magical event for our daughter and listened very carefully to all our daughter's ideas. We really couldn't believe Mimi's magic! She has the highest work ethic and delivers more than 100%! Great team of people backing her up as well. It was the best day of our daughter's life. Thank you mimi!

DidiCoco's catered the appetizers for my 50th Birthday celebration. First thing that made me love them was that they were on schedule. Their set up and clean up went exactly as discussed. I really had my mind set on having lettuce wraps as a starter and DidiCoco's made it happen. I allowed them to choose the balance of the menu and the Chicken Salad finger sandwiches were great, along with a few other items. I hope to use them again at a future event.

My husband and I are extremely satisfied with Post Oak Barbecue, they were extremely professional from day one. I got in contact with Ryan who answered every single question I had. The day of our daughters' birthday party, Ryan and his associate came in early to cut the meat right in front of us, which by the way smelled delicious. The food was outstanding, every single of our guests made great comments about how good the food was. Not only did they bring garlic bread and chocolate chip cookies but they even brought utensils for us. We look forward in hiring Post Oak Barbecue in the future. We 100% recommend their services.

She is so professional yet feels like family at the same time. Food is a very intimate experience and you want to know that what is prepared is not only delicious but has been prepared in a 'clean and healthy' manner. She nailed both!! I completely trust her food and loved every last bite.

Two Moms Catering did our wedding and cake. The most amazing was that we are vegans and wanted to have a buffet with vegan and some gluten free. The food was "AMAZING" , the service was superb and the presentation was outstanding!! Everything was fresh and seasoned to perfection. They even did our wedding cakes one Vegan and one Gluten Free, both were beautiful, moist and delicious!!! Two Moms Catering will be our first. Pice again and again, and we would recommend them to our family and friends!

I put together a team building for my company at William Land Park and the Burgess Brothers not only delivered but went over and above. The food was delievered hot and before the desiginated time. It was even delivered by one of the Burgess Brothers themselves. My co-workers could not stop raving about all the food especially the brisket, pulled pork and corn bread. My manager liked the food so much that he took his family there the next day for lunch. My office is actually planning another trip the resturant for lunch very soon. I can smell Magpie Productions chicken wings right now! MMMM good! And those roasted garlic crab and shrimp scampi dishes are the BEST! I can’t forget her amazing pasta dishes they are always filled with the right ingredients. And, what I appreciate most about Magpie Productions is her variety of dishes that range from Southern to gourmet. I would highly recommend Magpie Productions catering to anyone who is looking for tasty food that will delight the palate. And by the way, give her a party theme and she’s run with it! Bon appetite Stephanie T.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
