I needed a huge mirror removed from a wall, which he did quickly and kept the mess contained. Beyond that, he scraped the glue and did a quick repair of the wall so I could repaint it easily. He did the job quickly and cleaned up the area wonderfully. Fair price, fast work, no mess. Would definitely hire again.

Shower installation in commercial building: Michael Vargas arrived promptly to give an estimate on the installation of a new pre-fab corner shower in our commercial site's second bathroom. His estimate was fair, and he agreed to work with his two-man crew primarily at night and starting the following evening. He had experience in solving a challenging plumbing issue in successfully determining the best location for the drain route. Mike is easy to work with, cheerful, respectful, and honorable. He returned a day later at my request to fix a problem at no additional charge. I recommend Mike's business MVP Custom Plumbing for your plumbing needs in the Sacramento area, and he mentioned he also serves the Tahoe area!

This company epitomizes what it means to be an exceptional small-business contractor. We had them do a deck repair that ended being an 11 on a 1-10. Here's why: First, Steve and his team outlined specifically what needed to be done, presented a fair and reasonable cost, and (very important), were on time! Secondly, Carruth went over and above during the job. Often, it's the little things that make a difference, and this was certainly the case with Carruth Home Solutions. The caring and personal touch they did on each aspect of this job is something you're not going to find with the average contractor. Steve, his son Judah and the entire Carruth family had a hand in completing our job. Thanks, team, for an A+ effort. Friends, no job is too small or large for this company!

John was very courteous and understanding when he arrived. He repaired a door that someone else had put in. He made sure before he did anything that he understood exactly what I wanted done. He did such a good job I had him fix a fence outside. His prices are very reasonable. I really like the fact that he called to let me know he was on his way. He did such a great job that he will be coming back in a couple of weeks to replace a door. Thanks John for your help.

As a first-time homeowner but someone with a good amount of mechanical skill, I decided to take on the job of installing a garbage disposal by myself. You might guess since I'm writing a review here that things didn't go according to plan, and I decided I needed a professional. To make a long story short, the drain pipe is higher than the output of the garbage disposal, meaning the flow would reverse back into the disposal due to gravity if the plumbing wasn't set up correctly. I could guesstimate the best way to fit things together, but wasn't confident my effort would be leak-free. Rolo was able to come out on very short notice. In total it was something like 14 hours from logging into Thumbtack on a Saturday night, to hearing the doorbell ring the next morning. He and his helper were both quick, courteous and professional. They had no problems answering my various questions, and were very respectful of me as a plumbing newbie. (Wisely, they did go back over my work with the disposal though!) For a good price, I got a rock-solid installation under my kitchen sink, and done fast to boot. He even does Venmo! Do yourself a favor and call this man if you need some work done.

I am very impressed with Tom and his subs. Tom came out quickly and finished the job in a timely manner. The wall he built is beautiful. We love the texturizing. He saved us a lot of money on unnecessary roof repairs as well. I recommend him.

Todd recently completed a dry rot repair for me on the front of my house. He did a great job and there is no doubt that that part of the house is better protected from the elements than when it was first built. He was extremely thorough, dealt with problems as they arose and kept all costs within his project bid. I wouldn't hesitate to hire Todd again. Roland. 8/4/15

I would certainly hire RL Brothers again, for the following reasons: 1) They were on time, polite and cleaned-up after themselves. 2) I had tried to install a new wall-mounted bathroom sink. Julio fixed the leaks and came up with a creative solution for the bowl drain stopper release problem. He also fixed a running toilet issue. 3) Their rates were reasonable and as estimated.

We knew we had a leak in our roof and with the recent rain it quickly got worse. We reached out to Belru and spoke with Maks. He committed to coming to check the roof that same day. In torrential rain and wind Maks without hesitation went up on our roof to not only inspect the roof but repair it on the spot. Then Maks came back a few days later to ensure the sealant he put on the roof was still in place and our attic remained dry. Superior service! We would definitely hire him again.

I had a huge problem involving the staircase leading to a upstairs rental condo unit. The bolts attaching the railing to the wall were coming off and the entire second story staircase looked like it was about to collapse. The look of it was frightening and I needed help immediately. I searched on Google and found Thumbtack. Jim Blanton (Round-2-It Construction) responded immediately. He was honest, efficient and got the job done immediately. His assessment was accurate and the most important point was that he was honest and did not try to make more money by amplifying the problem. He did the work in the most efficient and complete manner. I was very impressed and recommended him to the HOA for future repairs. I plan to hire him to do the bathroom remodel in my home.

Keith is an excellent handyman who can do just about everything you need up to and including project management. He takes great pride in his work, is always on time, and he is trustworthy. I had him do pretty much everything to get our rental ready for the market. Plumbing, tiling a bathroom, dry rot repair work, you name it he can do it! He went above and beyond and even helped me coordinate with granite installers while we were out of town. I would not hesitate to hire him again for any project and I recommend him heartily.

We had upgraded windows installed and a new, more efficient, air conditioning system. The windows are beautiful and the installation was clean and professionally done. We are very impressed with the new heating and cooling system, it's ease of operation, it's efficiency, and the energy we hope to save. The installation of these components were also professionally done, the workmanship was superb.

I highly recommend Rough Country Renovations. I had gutters cleaned, gutter guards installed, and downspouts replaced. I was provided with a clear and easy to understand invoice. The pricing was great. The work was done in a timely and professional manner. Jan was very responsive in meeting my needs and answering all my questions. I will use the services of this company again for future projects.

I had to replace seven screens and repair and screen sliding door tracks. Dan provided excellent customer service and the cost was less than his competitors. He was prompt and installed new screens in a short amount of time. I have a patio that I want to enclose with custom made screens and provide privacy on a temporary basis. It has to be easy to install and remove. He came up with a solution and designed it to meet my requirements. He is great to work with, his workmanship, and ability to resolve my patio requirements makes him an excellent choice for screen repair, installation, and custom made projects.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
