When my husband and i got engaged we were looking for someone to not only marry us but also provide premarital counseling services. My sister recommended Imtasik famili counseling services. Ira did a fantastic job, he was very welcoming and has a great sense of humor. Although he was unable to marry us due to prior engagement, Ira helped us find someone available to marry us. I am not sure what all counselors talk about, but i would assume they all talk about similar things. Ira gave us advice on finances, how to "fight" fair and other topics as well. He never made us feel uncomfortable or judged for things we could not answer properly or at all for that matter. He was even very considerate about scheduling since I lived in Arizona at the time. I would definitely recommend Ira Lake at Imtasik family counseling services Inc. It is definitely worth it. Connie and Diego

I went to see Paul because I needed counseling, I didnt know he was a hypnotherapist. He called me right away and I could tell he really cares. He explained his technique and was very personable with a great sense of humor. He truly believed that he could help me. When I went to his office I was completely hopeless but Paul sat down with me to reassure me that I have a bright future ahead of me. I feel a LOT better after seeing him. This was different than a regular therapy session, and it worked a lot more effectively than just talking everything out. Somehow it really worked and afterwards I felt ready to take more responsibility for my life!

Murray was very experienced and professional with helping my husband and I get a better understanding of one another. Our relationship was strained over the course of several disagreements on key topics, but Murray helped provide us with some simple but powerful tools in order to work out our problems as a couple. His guidance and fair approach made sure we were both comfortable in speaking our mind. We were able to rebuild trust and repair the damaged foundation of our marriage at the end of Murray's counseling sessions. We would not hesitate to recommend him to a close friend if we saw they were having similar issues.

Pastor Charlie was such a blessing to us. When my friend's dad who is a pastor wasn't able to perform our ceremony we were left scrambling to find someone. Being christians and wanting a christian wedding ceremony I didn't want to just pick any officiant. I was really hesitant to find someone online but we are so thankful for Pastor Charlie. He is a wonderful man that has been married for many years and has a wife and children and grandchildren and also pastors a church. We also had pastor charlie do counseling for us. We live far away so we did skype sessions. We didn't necessarily think we needed counseling because we thought we were really good at communication and we are both on the same page with everything about life but we really learned a lot from him and there were things that came up with family and stress of wedding planning that he really helped us get through. I think it was great for us to have someone removed from our circle of family, friends, and church, to counsel us because we could really open up and share things and discuss things with him. He really got to know us and you can tell that he is doing this because it's really his heart to counsel people and not a job or for money. He has a lot of wisdom from his own life and wants couples to have the best Godly marriage possible. Our ceremony was beautiful and even though he didn't know us previous to our counseling, he took the time to get to know us and no one at the ceremony would have known we just met him a few months prior. Seemed as if we had known him for years. I would definitely recommend him. Out of all the people I researched in my area I found him to be the best honest, caring christian pastor for our ceremony.

We worked extensively with Pastor Eddie for our premarital counseling. He made us realized that the "engagement" period of a relationship isn't just meant to plan a wedding, it's more importantly meant to plan for your marriage. He equipped us both with the essential tools needed for marriage and for a lifetime of agape love. He covers everything with the couple so you are entering this marriage with no surprises. You review everything from fair fighting, communication, finances, parenting, etc. and how imperative it is to keep God at the center of your life and your marriage. Anyone we talk to who is looking to get engaged or is engaged, we encourage them to definitely do premarital counseling and to contact Pastor Eddie.

Randy Moraitis has been my coach through a difficult divorce and subsequent career change. He has the ability to focus in on the areas I most need help with and then works with me to create a realistic plan to effectively move toward and achieve my goals. He listens well and is fully present each time I meet with him, which is highly important to me. As a result of his coaching I was able to navigate my divorce and heal more quickly than I would have without his knowledge and guidance. I continue to work with him to further articulate my career path and how it ties in with my life purpose. Randy is continually furthering his own skills and knowledge through continuing education, which gives me further confidence in his abilities and his heart to bring his best to his clients. Without reservation, I give Randy Moraitis my highest recommendation.

Best therapist I have EVER seen. I have seen many. Melissa is solution focused and gave me feedback which is WHAT I NEED! Not only was she totally forthcoming but she also gave me advice and how to communicate better with my partner. I have been needing help and I don't have time to figure it out myself! Made so much more sense the way she was with me in the room compared to other therapists. I feel like we actually got a lot of work done! I recommend her to anybody as she is warm, funny and smart.

Scott was amazing! My low back had been hurting for four months. it was hard to sit and it got so bad I was starting to miss work. After the first session of acupuncture and massage I was feeling a lot better. In a couple of weeks all the pain was gone. Scott also taught me some exercises to keep the pain from returning. He said he teaches some kind of chinese yoga that is supposed to help but I don't have time for that.

Having been touched deeply by the reception of people to her work, and the transformational healings she viewed as a result, Deborah has continued her work as an Angelic Intuitive and Messenger guided by the Seven Ancient Archangels, The Spenta Angels, delivering their guidance and messages to those who request her help. As it is written, when the student is ready, the teacher appears. Many who have visited her galleries have been transformed by her words, and her paintings, many have been healed and guided by her. Deborah was born with a visionary gift and the gift of hearing and feeling Spirit, as well as the gift of observation, seeing into people's souls, reading their personalities and the ability to transform and heal the soul guiding them on a new journey of Love and Compassion, Manifesting and living life in a new way. After the untimely death of her husband, Dean, in July of 2016, her Soulmate and Twin Flame, as well as the death years before of her Mother & Father, and many beloved friends and animals, she knows first hand of the journey we must take to transform our lives to living a fuller, peaceful, abundant & happy life rising above all negative earthly concerns. As Deborah says, "Grief is a journey we must take." "It is a sacred journey that beckons us to embrace it, to honor our tears & to honor the loss of our loved one..." I love what I do, teaching others to "Walk in Beauty & Grace," to know without a doubt that they are here for a distinct purpose and how to live our lives as a Miracle. It is my honor to guide people through this journey, not only those experiencing the loss of a loved one, or a job, but also to those finding their way in this human world we live in, finding our balance as Divine Beings in a Human body. Deborah has many incredible testimonials from those who have met her & visited her galleries and she encourages you to read them under Testimonials. Not unlike an Angel herself she has been noted for her Grace and her beautiful sense of compassion for all people & animals. Many clients have called her "The Painter of Beauty" as well as magical and filled with grace & beauty. Her presence heals and opens the heart of others. She has been called a Master Healer, a teacher, with a warm, soothing angelic voice emanating the greatest of all gifts, compassion, for as she says compassion is the Doorway to Grace. As a wife of 27 years, and now a "Widow" a label she has not yet gotten used to, she is filled with an even greater empathy and compassion for those who are suffering and negotiating a new pattern of living, a new path in this wonderful experience we call life. As Deborah's painting says: "In the Presence of Love,There are Miracles ©” “Love is the essence of all Life, Live love, give love ...expect miracles ... & you shall find miracle will follow miracle & wonders will never cease...” - Deborah Brooks Corporate clients are also welcomed as she offers a new way of doing business in this world where the business and treatment of employees and clients becomes a marriage, and a "win/win situation for each person involved.

When talking to a good friend is no longer enough, turn to over 30 years of proven experience. I am a licensed clinical social worker or LCSW and a licensed marriage and family therapist or LMFT. I am practicing psychotherapy, couples and family counseling, divorce mediation and divorce coaching in Newport Beach. I have been helping people find a better way to meet life's challenges for over 30 years in private practice. I offer solution-focused counseling, using the best of traditional psychotherapy, along with more contemporary techniques. Over the years, I have found that one size does not fit all. I choose instead to tailor my counseling techniques to the unique individual and situation in front of me, because no two people or their problems are exactly alike. My goal for you is to provide a safe environment to create possibility for change. Everyone experiences emotional pain at times. However, when the stress becomes especially severe, whether it takes the form of persistent sadness, depression, anxiety, confusion, procrastination or career problems, it is time to think about seeking professional help. Relationship problems, whether you are in one or having difficulty forming one, can also be a major source of emotional distress. External factors, which can't be avoided in life, sometimes combine with internal issues causing intense discomfort, which may feel confusing. I will help you to identify the areas of your life needing adjustment, and assist you with a plan for improvement. I will provide the tools and personal support every step of the way, while creating a structure that enables you to become your own best advisor. I give results not regrets!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

  • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
  • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
  • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
  • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
  • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
  • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
  • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
  • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
  • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
  • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
  • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
  • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
  • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
  • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
  • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
  • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
  • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
  • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
  • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

  • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
  • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
  • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
  • Overcoming addictions.
  • Managing chronic illness.
  • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.

How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.
