I have just completed my personalized training course with Canine Companions as of May 31st and the entire experience was enlightening and delightful. My furry friend is a 3 year old male blue nose Pit Bull terrier and I needed a knowledgeable professional to teach me how to best train and care for my friend. Kym not only did that but so much more. I understand dog hierarchy and the leader/follower tendencies of the pack mentality so much more thoroughly now. She not only taught me what works with dogs and how to keep their respect and obedience but WHY it works as well. I didn't have to overcome any severe issues with my Pittie, as he has a great general disposition as it is. What we worked on was asserting my role as a leader to him and how to make my boy know that I was in charge and that he could trust in me and follow my direction all in a safe, positive, learning environment. You never have to lift a hand to your dog if you know how to properly address the issues you have with them! After three sessions with Kym I am now to able to walk him on the leash with him at my side and no longer pulling and dragging along to the next spot for him to sniff or mark, I AM IN CONTROL, and he happily rambles on along side me enjoying the walk and accepting my direction without challenging it. Among that huge step in my relationship with him we learned how to properly reinforce the basic commands with a dog that I feel personally are oft overlooked as to how critical they are to a dogs growth and the relationship you share with them. I know how to execute these commands in a way to will not confuse my pup or contradict other commands I have given thus confusing the poor guy. Kym not only helped me fix his bad habits, but my own bad habits as well. I thank her dearly for that. Kym was on time with our meetings, always had treats on hand to reinforce his training, and was always more than happy to teach helpful tips and advice on proper care and health topics concerning our four legged friends. I can proudly show off my friendly and obedient Pit Bull Terrier thanks to Kym and her vast amount of knowledge and care she has for these creatures. It was the very best time and money I have spent with my dog and I absolutely believe that EVERY dog owner should experience instruction such as hers, everyone would benefit from responsible owners and safe healthy and happy pets!

Steve is an incredible, elite master trainer. He holds the key to unlocking all of your dogs' best attributes. He has done wonders for my dogs, and I have witnessed him doing even more for others. There's nothing that this man can't fix about your dog. But, you must be willing to put in the time and do what it takes to maintain. I have two mixed breeds (brother and sister) that have severe separation anxiety, when they weren't near each other. They were completely co dependent on each other, fearful and extremely sensitive to everything around them. They would whine and bark when separated. Steve had them for less than two weeks, and now they have no problem, at all being separated. He taught me how to build their confidence, and help them succeed. Which has made training them in obedience much easier. They now have the will to work, and the desire to learn more. As do I. He has inspired me so much that it has now become my passion, and I am now his apprentice. What I love most about the way that he trains, is that he is very gentle and patient with the dogs. He is by far more concerned with the dogs' well-being than anything else. He can be pretty tough on the owners, but once you come to realize why, you really can't be mad at him. The issues that your dog has, are typically there because of you. Your dog is a mirror of yourself. Once you've accepted that, you can then both change together, building the bond between you and your dog even stronger. But, you must be part of the change in order for it to work. Wendy is my senior master trainer, and I have learned so much already from both of them. They have taught me beginner and advanced obedience, behavior work, tracking, scent detection, how to show in AKC competitions, how to train movie dogs, and much more. Through the skills that I have acquired from them, I am now teaching my own classes and training dogs daily, using the same incredible methods that these amazing dog trainers have taught me. I highly recommend Steve and Wendy, and all of their trainers to anyone who truly cares for their dog.

So I live in Alabama and have a friend in Tn. that had bought a dog from Vince. The dog was one of the best working dogs I have seen. The dog was the perfect balance of work and home. I reached out to Vince with some questions about a dog I had just bought. Being that I don't have the time to take off of work and fly out to California with my dog and train with him, Vince never once hesitated to answer my questions. I kept him up to date on my training and I hit a wall, I had a few problems I couldn't seem to work out. Vince offered very precise training advise and even went so far as to ask me for a few videos and then sent me some videos of the training I could use to show me exactly what I could do to accomplish my goals. Nobody else would have done that, nobody else would have cared. Vince truly cares about dogs and wants to make sure that you and your dog have the best relationship and quality of life possible. I am actively trying to find a way to get me and my dog to him so I can train with him and thank him in person for all that he has done for me. It's never hard to discern when someone is doing it because they love what they do or if they are doing it because they love them money it brings. I can assure you Vince is in it because he loves dogs and he loves what he does. Truly one of the best people I have met in the dog training industry. Thanks again Vince for everything you have done for a know nothing beginner like me.

We are very excited to get going on training our dog with Dave. He came to our house on Saturday, and spent over an hour discussing our dogs needs, and Dave's philosophy on training. (Free consultation) We were very impressed, and feel that he will be a great fit for our family.

David is a great trainer. He has helped us tremendously with our Pitbull Shiloh. He was reactive towards other dogs and we just couldn't take him anywhere. We were looking for a long term trainer we can rely on and David has definitely been reliable. We did his behavior modification then his basic obedience and his advanced obedience. Shiloh can now walk nicely on his leash around other dogs even in stores!

Jessie is knowledgeable and reliable about walking dogs. She has some training experience. My dog is very leash reactive and I'm not totally comfortable letting him go with someone without my supervision. Jessie was willing to let me do that. For now, I've postponed dog walking, but not because of Walk'n Wag'n. They seem to be a reliable and professional company. I would recommend them.

Audrey scheduled us right away for a consultation to help with our food aggressive dog. Within one week using her training and tips any family member can pull our dogs food away with out getting biten or even a growl. Our German Shepard will now wait patiently in a calm "sit" position till we put his food back for him. Looking forward to more training!

All aspects of Paw by Paw is amazing. Ayeumi is so kind, patient and understanding of the dogs that she is training. She got our dog as a baby and then he went back 8 months later and a 100 lbs heavier. Her training of both the dog and owner is superb as well as her assistance when needed. I would recommend her absolutely and proudly.

The crew at Off Leash k9 Training Palm Springs surpasses my expectations. I really didn’t know if there was any hope for me or my puppy, but the training my dog received, and the education I was given was second to none. I can literally take my dog anywhere now and she doesn’t even need a leash. It’s literally a different dog experience when you can let them roam off Leash with the confidence that they’ll come when called, and Off Leash of Palm Springs can deliver that life changing experience in just 14 days! Thank you so much to Morgan and her staff.

I hired max to board and train my labrador retriever, Jack. Jack was awful on the leash and I didnt have the time to teach him even basic commands. Max worked on leash walking, taught my dog how to sit, stay, down, come, heel, side, and then taught me how to keep him from becoming untrained. Thank you Max, you truly helped me and Jack.

Brian trained my dog Bella. I hired him for 3 training sessions and the amount he taught her in just three sessions was awesome. Probably more important than training her, he trained me how to work with her and re-enforce what he taught her. Bella really seemed to like Brian (possibly partly because he always has treats with him!) and she really positively responded to his instruction. He does seem to have an immediate connection to dogs. The training was very interactive and he made sure to address any problems I was having with Bella and offered very practical solutions. I would definitely recommend him if you are looking for someone to train your dog.

Jennifer Martinez is amazing, I've had the chance to experience seeing Jennifer work. I can tell you one thing for sure she will show your dog obedience, who's in charge , and how to interact with your pet . She showed me how my attitude around my pet can change my pets feelings and attitude as well , I have gotten very nervous when big dogs would pass while walking my dog I have gotten very nervous and tense and she told me to relax and trust my dog as well after being around a big dog I calmed down as well as my dog , the training Jennifer show is with a passion. Jennifer is an amazing person to trust and work with .

    About

I am able to calm the excited dog but at the same time able to utilize the excitement to get results. I offer leash training, basic commands (sit, lay, paw), and some advanced, such as stay, crawl and jump (all depending on the dog, of course). Food aggression, dog aggression, even people aggression are all fixable with the right handler. A very important part of my training is making sure you as the owner are able to be consistent and firm and have full respect from your fur baby. In the words of Cesar Millan, "be the pack leader".

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
