I would highly suggest Michael Davidson as a tutor. I am 43 years old and had been out of school for quite a while, but because of the tutoring I got from Michael, I passed my math GED test with flying colors! He is very knowledgeable, helps you to figure out which areas that you need to focus on the most and explained different ways of how to handle the math problems. He also provided positive inspiration to help me get through the toughest of math problems and cheered me on to the end! Thank you again for everything, Michael!

Great ACT Tutor! Joyee is a great ACT tutor. He is patient, encouraging, and has deep insight into the type questions the current ACT tests include. We engaged Joyee to help my daughter with her ACT - focusing on Science and Maths. Her initial diagnostic test results were decent - 33 out of 36. After two months of Joyee’s help, my daughter proceeded to take her ACT in September. She received the perfect score - 36 out of 36. We are very happy with her results and she couldn’t have gotten the perfect score in such short period of time had we not engaged Joyee. Joyee: job well done! - From James, Irvine, CA on October 5th, 2015."

I am not one to leave a ton of reviews for services and I have had mixed success with Thumbtack, but I think this man is an unsung hero!!! My daughter has struggled in math for years, since grammar school, and is now in 8th grade. She continued to struggle with a different tutor. We have been working once a week with Mr. Matlak now for about six weeks and the difference is simply amazing. She just got her first "A" in a math quiz since grammar school and we both nearly cried in relief and joy. The two most important things about him - he KNOWS the concepts cold (some tutors DON'T), and he is PATIENT. I came to the conclusion that my daughter simply would not get the pace of learning or individualized attention in the public school setting that she needs for this particular topic. She is doing well in other topics but math is her Achilles heel. I didn't have the patience (or the knowledge) to help much and it became a source of frustration for both of us. It is such a RELIEF to see her more confident and not stressed about math now!! I can't say enough good things about Mr. Matlak. He promptly answered my inquiries, quickly provided two references who gave glowing reviews, and we are so happy to have him. We didn't want to go the Sylvan or other company routes - Mr. Matlak comes to your home, sits down with your student, and gets to work. I can't believe I did not invest in my child's future earlier in her school career - it is well worth it. We do an hour a week and it has made a VAST difference. I have no relation to Mr. Matlak (other than to sing his praises) and I would be happy to provide anyone interested with additional comments. Update April 22, 2015: Our daughter continues to work with Ray weekly and is now pulling a "B" average, coming up from the "D" average she was pulling when we started. Not struggling and spending so much time on math has allowed her to focus on her other classes and encouraged her to bring her other grades up as well as she prepares to enter high school. We couldn't be more pleased to see our daughter's confidence growing with respect to math. We'll keep him through COLLEGE if he's willing!! All kidding aside, Ray is well worth the investment, even if your budget calls for less frequent tutoring sessions.

My daughter is a 9th grader at Point Loma High School. She transferred from a private Catholic school and has never seen the Integrated Math that they now offer in the public schools system. She has always battled math anxiety and I was very worried with the new math being offered. I was referred to Nina from a mutual friend right before school started and my daughter instantly bonded with her. She felt so at ease with Nina and she explained things in a way that she could easily understand. Nina even went so far as to attain a copy of her math book and reached out to her teacher. I am so very happy to say my daughter received an A her first semester and is maintaining an A in her second semester. I have recommended Nina to other students who are having a positive result as well. If you are looking for a math tutor - Nina is the best!

Ahmed Shalaby is an amazing tutor for Jah my 9 year old son. He has instilled confidence in him and it has shown in his most recent test scores. The different techniques he uses are great and my son picks up on the strategies. We are currently doing twice a week on Monday and Wednesday and it has been a great investment. Jah thinks Ahmed is cool and he wants to keep showing him that he is getting smarter and doesn’t want to let him down. Thanks for all you for our family Ahmed. It’s appreciated

Jenny was a fantastic ACT tutor for my son! I could not have picked a better tutor. Jenny worked with him this summer and was able to quickly ascertain his areas of strength and areas for needed development for the ACT. She also quickly assessed his learning style and put together an efficient customized learning/tutoring plan and tutoring schedule for the summer that helped him make huge strides in both his strongest and weakest sections of the ACT, improving his already high comprehensive test results by 5 points thus far with another week of tutoring yet to go! In particular she did an amazing job tutoring him on the English portion, helping him go from a 26 to a 35 in that section! He has really enjoyed working with her and looked forward to their tutoring sessions. I will be signing my younger son up for ACT tutoring with Jenny next summer for sure!

I was signed up to take a Kaplan course for GMAT prep and was talking to a co-worker about it when they told me their story. They took one of the same Kaplan courses I was signed up to take and didn't get their desired GMAT score. In their second attempt, they signed up for private tutoring with John Easter, one of Elite Home Tutoring tutors, and their GMAT score improved by over 100 points. After hearing this story, I called to cancel my Kaplan class & signed up with Elite Home Tutoring, with a special request to work with John. During my studies, I decided that I wanted to take the GRE instead of the GMAT. I explained this to my tutor John and to Eric at Elite Home Tutoring and the change was so simple. John is not only skilled in GMAT prep but GRE prep as well. So the only thing that would need to change were the materials. If you're looking for the best resources for test prep I highly recommend Elite Home Tutoring. I have no complaints!

Nancy's is the best tutor I've ever had I have 3 boys and 1 girls and I have had over 15 different tutors over the years and by far she is the best I have had she is everything I am as far being stern but she brings the softness that the student needs to get the best out of them my daughter did not bond with the three tutors before Nancy but she really loves Mrs Nancy as she calls her and she look forward to her session every week. I hired her to teach my daughter Spanish who has never taken before and she already can write and speak Spanish in less than two months she was so good I ask if she does any other subjects and of course she does it all so now she tutors my daughter in math and her grade went from a C to an A she makes sure the student understands the topic before she moves on and she won't budge or go any further unless the student totally understands it. If your looking for top shelf tutor look no futher and for the price it's a win win for me and my daughter thanks for making my daughter experience a total success.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is ACT test prep?

The ACT is a college entrance exam taken by students (typically in their junior year of high school) to determine admission eligibility and merit-based scholarship eligibility. The test may be taken as many times as desired and is not limited to high school juniors. Originally the acronym stood for American College Testing, but now ACT is the stand-alone name. ACT prep is a way for students to strategically prepare for test-taking. ACT prep helps students improve scores, practice taking the test, learn test-taking strategies, and improve material comprehension. Students can get help with ACT prep tutors in one-on-one sessions, via group tutoring lessons, in online self-study programs, or online with a tutor in video calls. The ACT test covers:

    • English
    • Science understanding and reasoning
    • Math
    • Reading
    • Writing essay (optional)

How do you prepare for the ACT?

The ACT is a universally accepted college readiness exam. There are multiple ways to prepare for the exam. One-on-one ACT prep tutoring is one of the most effective ways for students to ready themselves for the test. A tutor who specializes in ACT prep will coach the student on the type of material they can expect while also working specifically with topics that are more challenging for that particular student. Group tutoring sessions are a more cost-effective way to reap the benefits of an ACT prep instructor; a suggestion is to gather a group of four friends or classmates to share the cost. Professional tutors often recommend that test prep begin approximately three months prior to the exam. Cramming — unfortunately — doesn’t provide the same score results as consistent study, test-related homework, and practice exams do. Weekly two-hour learning sessions are what many pro tutors suggest for their college exam prep students. For top test-taking performance, tutors usually provide work throughout the week and the weekly session is used to cement knowledge and address weak areas. Math is a hard topic for most students, so plan accordingly.

    What is on the ACT?

The ACT is made up of a variety of multi-choice questions under four main subject areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science. There is also the option for a written essay. For ACT prep, it’s important to study each subject. Each subject area is broken down into multiple parts to provide a comprehensive snapshot of the student’s understanding of the material. ACT prep provides an opportunity to prepare for the subject matter in each area.

    ACT English:

    • Production of writing: 29 percent-32 percent of English score. These questions focus on topic development and organization, unity, and cohesion.
    • Knowledge of language: 13 percent-19 percent of English score. This section examines the student’s use of vocabulary and effective language use.
    • Conventions of standard English: 51 percent-56 percent of English score. These questions address sentence structure and formation, punctuation and grammar, and recognition of grammatical errors and how to improve.

    ACT Math:

    • Preparing for higher math: 57 percent-60 percent of mathematics score. These questions cover number and quantity, algebra, functions, geometry, and statistics and probability.
    • Integrating essential skills: 40 percent-43 percent of mathematics score. These questions address comprehension of math learned prior to and after 8th grade.
    • Modeling: less than 25 percent of mathematics score. These questions examine how students use modeling skills in all math topics.

    ACT Reading:

    • Key ideas and details: 55 percent-60 percent of reading score. The questions test students’ ability to summarize information, draw conclusions, and grasp central themes.
    • Craft and structure: 25-30 percent of reading score. These questions examine students’ ability to understand an author’s word choice and meaning and analyze various points of view.
    • Integration of knowledge and ideas: 13-18 percent of reading score. These questions examine students’ ability to understand facts and opinions and make connections between texts that share similar themes.

    ACT Science:

    • Interpretation of data: 45–55 percent of science score. Students will need to analyze and manipulate scientific data presented in various formats.
    • Scientific investigation: 20–30 percent of science score. These questions will test students’ understanding of experimental tools, procedures and design.
    • Evaluation of models, inferences, and experimental results: 25–35 percent of science score.

    ACT Writing:

    • This is a 40-minute written essay that examines students’ competence with ideas and analysis, development and support, organization, and language use and conventions.

What are the subjects on the ACT?

English, mathematics, reading, and science are the four main subjects on the ACT. Writing is an optional subject students can select when they register to take the test. The subjects were determined as a way to test the sum total of knowledge and comprehension that the students have accumulated up until the start of their senior year of high school. ACT prep breaks down each subject of the ACT test so the student understands what type of questions they will encounter and to provide them with strategies for answering questions. Doing well on the ACT is not only about academic smarts. Learning the nuances of taking a standardized test can greatly improve a student’s test scores. On the ACT, each of the four subjects is broken into subsections to test the students’ understanding in that area. The official ACT website provides free online ACT prep tools for each section, including English, Math, Reading, Science, and Writing.

How many questions are on the ACT test?

There are 215 total questions on the ACT test. The ACT covers four academic areas and students have 175 minutes total to complete the test. For students who opt to take the ACT writing test, there will be a written essay (in addition to the standard ACT topics), which students will have 40 minutes to complete. For ACT prep, it’s wise to study the material that will be covered within each academic category and take practice tests to become comfortable with the format.

The English test has 75 questions that must be completed within 45 minutes. The math test has 60 questions with a 60-minute time limit. The reading test has 40 questions and 35 minutes total. The science test has 40 questions that must be completed in 35 minutes. Tutors may recommend taking the test more than once as part of the ACT prep training, with the goal of improving your overall score each time. Official ACT recommendations urge students to answer each question on test day, even if it is a guess, as there is no penalty for guessing.
