We recently bought an older fixer upper and Jose has helped us with several jobs. He removed popcorn ceiling, texturized, put in new drywall and pot lights, did painting, installed floor tile, and is now tiling my new shower. He has a lot of overall construction experience and brings important knowledge to the job. His work has been quality and looks really nice. His pricing is very competitive and he is responsive and easy to work with. We had a few last minute delays on our end getting materials and he kindly rescheduled several times. We are going to work with him on some outside hardscape and fencing as well. We highly recommend Jose and his team. (I will add some photos soon)

Shay is very knowledgable regarding the care of tile, grout. She will be coming back to finish this bathroom and then my kitchen. Evidently, the contractors I used never sealed these two tile areas.

Dave and his partner Zack recently completed a bathroom remodel for me. The job included new porcelain tile for the floors and the shower surrounds. They were both very professional showing up on time every day and putting in a full days work with only a short break for lunch. The quality of work was awesome and the job was completed on time. Friendly guys who know what they’re doing. I’m using them again for another bathroom remodel.

I recently called my church asking for a referral for a person who would be honest, affordable and be able to do almost anything I needed done around our home. They referred me to Praetorian Construction and Sean Benson. It turned out to be a great recommendation. I've used Sean several times now and he has been able to accomplish everything I've asked him to do. He has repaired kitchen drawer hardware, installed window blinds, installed exhaust fan motors, installed garage shop lights, installed a microwave oven, repaired tile grout on kitchen counters, built garage storage cabinets, installed and fixed electrical outlets, landscaped and installed a beautiful synthetic lawn in our front yard and this is just a small sample of what Sean is capable of doing. Sean works hard, fast, is fairly priced and is a really good guy. I consider myself very fortunate to have found Sean and have referred him to several of my friends already.

It started off as a simple job, pull some vinyl that was separating from the subfloor in a very small bathroom and replace it with ceramic tile. The job was scheduled to take a day and a half (a good portion of that time is waiting for the tile to set) but as soon as James pulled the vinyl back there was a homeowner's worst nightmare, mold from a leaky toilet. James then worked tirelessly for the next four and a half days removing all the damaged subfloor, the cast iron plumbing that had rotted out, the floor joists and tearing the bathroom down to dirt. When he rebuilt it he added more floor joists to support the floor and concrete board over the new subfloor as well as tar paper to seal the whole thing. It's the most stable floor in the house. James worked tirelessly, he was at the jobsite at least 8+ hours a day, plus purchasing materials and dumping the waste at night. When it finally came time to lay the tile and James brought a helper in. The tile looks fantastic and I am happy to know that there is no more mold hidden in the floor. James left the jobsite clean and clear at the end of each day and at the end of the project, some contractors rush that part of the job. The rates were more than reasonable considering the hidden damage and repairs that had to be done. He even put up with my mom watching him and asking a million questions. We are very pleased with the quality of the work.

We are very appreciative of and thrilled with the excellent work Adam and his crew performed at our cafe. We had an urgent and messy tile repair job that we needed taken care of. Adam came out for this after hours repair on a short notice and completed the job exceedingly well. Would definitely work with ADA Flooring in the future!

This is my strong recommendation for Coggins Construction. Patrick of Coggins Construction is a local licensed contractor professional with over four decades of experience under his belt. We spent a lot of time talking with him discussing options and both he and his wife visited our home on the weekend. We hired Patrick to demo the front living room, demo the entryway, remove skylights, and reframe everything the original as built state. Patrick and his team have a passion for construction and it shows on the job. We had a strict timeline to meet. They showed up on time, worked hard, and cleaned up well after each day. Also they were very kind to my family, even my hyper Chihuahua! I had a few scope changes throughout and Patrick was able to accommodate my requests with great price and no impact to schedule. Thank you Coggins Construction for transforming our house into a home!

Freedom Renovation finished our kitchen remodel about 4 weeks ago and we LOVE it! We found them through door hanger. We live in La Jolla area, so we drove up north and stopped by their showroom, met Anna and set up an appointment. Alex and Anna arrived on time 2 days later and really listened to what we wanted, while other contractors did not. A day or two later we got an email with our initial estimate and a 3-D picture of expected result. A few adjustments needed to be made, so we called in with Alex to discuss about it in further detail. Alex and Allen were also super nice and willing to work with us to reduce the cost. We talked for a few days, and finally made our decision to go with them because they appeared down to earth and reliable. The first 2 days guys showed up to demo the kitchen, tile floor and the soffit. By the end of day 2 demo was done, half the drywall was in and 1/4 of the tile floor was laid. By day 6, all the tile was in, drywall and mud was done! These guys work hard and fast and their work is top quality. We chose their cheapest cabinets which is real wood front and compressed engineering wood side, very sturdy and built to last. We were quoted a 5-week time line and they finished in 4 weeks - Alex the project manager was terrific and always available. The tile looks so good. Their work ethic and quality are solid and I would be happy to work with them again.

I hired Ranferis for exterior paint job. I have a large house with clay tile roof and a second floor. He managed to climb over the tiles with minimal damage and paint and repair the second floor wood beams and eaves. He also replaced the broken tiles at his own expense. He is professional, responsive and courteous. He gave me the best price and value among several painters, and did more than he promised. I would definitely recommend him.

Having experience with tile and stone, I knew I needed a professional for my project. I interviewed a few tile and stone installers, and I was waiting for someone to talk to me about past experience with glass and stone. Our fireplace is the centerpiece of the entertainment area, and I wanted to make sure it was done right. After seeing Tony work, I know there is no project he cannot handle. This was a very tricky install, in that we were working with very small glass tiles that came on paper backing, and not mesch. You need to be able to wet the tile before you cut it, and keep it on the wet paper at the same time keeping the pattern with no compromise. This can only be done by a detailed veteran with a lot of experience. Tony showed a lot of attention to detail, and we have had nothing but compliments from friends and guests about how nice the fireplace looks. We wanted it to stand out, and we were beyond pleased with his work. The best thing I can say is, we will have him back to do another project in the near future. Thanks Tony, Tile and Stone Workz is a class act.

Sergio Flores was fantastic. He came to give me an estimate the same day I called. His bid was very fair and he started the repair to my bamboo flooring the very next day. His crew worked into the night to finish the job in one day. I also asked him to bid on my fence repair and the exterior painting on my home. He is working on my fence today. I like that he bids the labor and material separately. He is easy to communicate with (I don't speak Spanish). I would definitely use him for all of my future projects. I have already referred him to my neighbor for her fence repair. When you find a contractor that can handle various projects, is prompt and honest, I hold on to them. I am willing to share him once he finishes my projects. Mary Malone 760-450-6215

Ken has a rare mix of qualities in a contractor: he's responsive, smart, professional, creative, and detail-oriented. He’s also extremely reasonable – both in terms of pricing and personality… and a wonderfully nice guy to work with (his "2nd man" on the job was his son, equally meticulous and wonderful to work with). Ken looked over our situation, proposed creative solutions, worked with me on sourcing materials, and ultimately saved us money & time while delivering an exceptional result. His proposal was not the lowest or highest priced one- it was very reasonable and he actually came in a little under budget, enough so that I added a few side projects replacing bathroom fans. Ken completely tore-up our existing VERY poorly laid tile in two showers - and a small bathroom floor. He repaired the underlying damage, laid new beds, tile, grout, and sealed it all. We are absolutely thrilled with the quality of work and his attention to detail - from being on-schedule, meticulous about clean-up, and communicating about the project along the way. We had -zero- issues or problems with him on these projects. We are so pleased and happy that we're also going to work with him on our upcoming kitchen project. I wholeheartedly recommend him. Feel free to reach out if you would like a more detailed reference.

I hired AP Contracting to do a major renovation on a rental unit. My tenant had lived in this unit for approximately 20 years and the unit was in need of some major work. I called AP Contracting and scheduled an estimate. Anthony showed up on time and we walked the entire unit. I had ideas of what needed to be done and Anthony made some serious suggestions which I also agreed to. I told him that I also had a budget that I needed to stay within. The next day Anthony provided me with a written estimate and a price which was about $3300 less than I had budgeted and this included his additional suggestions, I was impressed. I was more impressed when his crew arrived the next day and the work began. I did a complete renovation, cabinets, carpets, took down the aged popcorn ceiling, painted, replaced the tub and shower, tiled the floors in the bathrooms, painted the entire unit and put in new carpeting. Anthony suggested replacement of the sliding glass doors and a few windows and the replacement of the garage door, which had a broken spring. This entire job took them 13 days start to finish. Now I am not one to do social media reviews but I was asked to review AP Contracting as a former customer. I do not think I am a former customer as I am in the process of having Anthony work on the 4th of my rentals as I write, I have always been one to worry about shady contractors, but I am glad I found AP Contracting and would recommend them to anybody. Tyrone with Snosrap Enterprises installed the flooring, countertops, and backsplash in my kitchen - and I could not be happier! I am quite a perfectionist when it comes to my home, and even from the window ledge to the wall of the backsplash, the tile lines match perfectly from corner to corner. He told me quality was their number one, and they delivered. It is hard to find contractors who pay more attention to quality than a quick buck nowadays.

I have 40 years of construction experience. Primarily a carpenter, I have developed a few properties and have extensive experience with all trades. I demand quality work and materials. In April, '11, ABOUT FLOORS installed all new flooring (carpet and vinyl) in my house in San Marcos. I have seen other of their work (harwood, tile, etc.) and I eagerly recommend this company to homeowners and general contractors. Their prices are very competitive, their work is beyond reproach, performed in a timely manner and they go "above and beyond." These guys are some of the best and most courteous of any I've ever worked with and I feel fortunate to have had them on this job. ABOUT FLOORS is about excellence. I'm starting to believe there's nothing Marroquin Construction Corp can't do. Where to begin... they were my general contractor for a major renovation of our 1919 historic home. They've installed exhaust fans, mounted television sets, hung cabinets in the garage, created a beautiful outdoor living space, fixed lath and plaster, repaired electrical, ran network cable throughout the house, replaced light fixtures, re-stuccoed the entire house, poured stamped cement, built an outdoor grill area, ran gas lines to an outdoor fire pit, laid intricate tile for a fountain and shower ... the list goes on and on. Robin Marroquin has been working on my home for 15 years. His employees are neat, prompt, knowledgeable, and polite. You can tell a lot about a contractor by his trucks. They are clean and organized. I would highly recommend this company for ANY of your house repairs/improvements/remodel projects.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

    • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
      • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
    • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
    • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to install tile?

Tile installation costs vary widely depending on the tiles you choose, where you want them installed, and what kind of demolition and surface preparation you need to have done. The national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The more tiles that need to be cut by hand and laid on the surface, the higher the total cost. Tile installation professionals can handle many different types of stone, ceramic and porcelain tiles, applying them in kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and entranceways. They can create anything from artistic mosaic backsplashes in your kitchen to modern shower enclosures to rustic patios in your backyard. Tile installation professions often can remove existing flooring or old tiles and replace drywall. Tile prices range from $1 to more than $50 per square foot — handmade ones are even priced individually — depending on the material. Rustic, handmade or special-use tiles cost more to install because they must be applied to the surface one by one, rather than in a sheet. For most jobs, tile installation costs are based on the square footage of the project. For example, a standard 6-foot by 8-foot shower tile installation can average $1,200-$1,600, depending on whether the tiles go to the top of the shower or to the ceiling. The total cost of a tiling project also includes the grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps, and tile mounting materials like backer board.

How much does it cost to install tiles in a kitchen?

One of the most common kitchen upgrades is installing decorative backsplash tiles in the space between the counters and cabinets. It’s a chance for homeowners to get creative while also protecting the kitchen walls from splashes and stains. Like all tiling projects, kitchen tile project costs depend on the tiles you choose, installation materials such as grout and mortar, and any surface materials, like replacement backer board. The national average for a tiled kitchen backsplash is $490-$750. In general, pricing averages $10-$40 per square foot for installation, not including tile. Some professional tile installers have a minimum day rate for small projects, which averages $350.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
