We found Stay Green and Clean Landscaping Services on Thumbtack.com. They came out to our home and gave us a proposal for cleaning/trimming up the front and back yard. When the job was completed, the yard looked amazing! We will be using them for a bi-weekly service now. We highly recommend this company!

Jose was the first to respond to my request for someone to perform concrete installation in the courtyard of our home (which was previously filled with dirt and plants) and he offered to come out the same day to provide an estimate. Not only did he show up on time, but he provided an affordable estimate and said he could start the following day (a huge plus!). My stepdad who's been in the commercial construction industry for 40+ years was there for the meeting as well and was thoroughly impressed with Jose's knowledge when discussing the his strategy for job. The day of the project, Jose and his crew (who were also outstanding) showed up on time and did an AMAZING job. I couldn't be happier with the final results. The crew was professional and cleaned and hauled everything away when they were done. If you're looking for construction services, I would highly recommend Jose's services!

I needed someone out to my house A.S.A.P and they were able to come out the next day and give me a quote on all of the work. We needed some major stuff done to our property and after the fantastic price we set up a date for them to come out. They arrived and played no games in getting started. The crew was courteous and very respectful. The work was seriously amazing and our house is now ready to sell not to mention stands out. I will definitely keep them in mind for future projects as well as referring them to anyone who needs landscaping help. As if their work and price was not enough, I needing other junk hauled away and again they beat out the price that others had given me and did a great job. Seriously without hesitation I would hire them again!

Greg and his crew attacked the job of clearing cacti from my yard and stumping a tree. They were cautious, diligent and energetic. His crew worked effectively as a team and completed the job, including thorough clean up, within the estimated time. GM Tree Service and Landscaping provides excellent service.

Charlie did a good amount of landscaping and softscaping on my backyard this year. He also did some fencing, paint jobs, and installed pavers for me. He is reliable, takes directions well, and his prices are competitive. ~ Dan V. San Diego, CA

When we started this project was had somewhat of an idea of what we wanted. When Omar started walking around with us, his vision who lot became our vision. He didn't try to hustle us to get something we didn't need. When his crew started they worked methodically during each phase of the project. I was extremely impressed with their work ethic and artistry. It is art and they are good. The end result far exceeded any of our expectations. I would recommend Coastline Landscape Development to everyone with landscaping projects and needs. GREAT COMPANY.

Reliable. Does a good job maintaining my lawn and landscape. They come through and mow, blow, weed and trim. A little on higher side for price ( we pay $60/visit for 2 guys 1 hour every two weeks) but they're good guys.

Gordon was prompt to respond, scheduled me in quickly, and followed through with excellent work. They were able to repair a bad pipe breakage along with several other repair/maintenance projects, including relocating a few sprinkler heads. My entire irrigation system was in need of TLC and he restored it to “good health”.

Ronsi had a positive attitude and worked diligently to complete the tremendous task get our landscaping spruced up so that we can sell our house. I especially appreciated how he transformed our backyard from a daunting field of foxtails and fig leaves, to a cleared space ready for someone else to improve! He has a joyful personality and great work ethic! I highly recommend him! I included a before and after pic of the backyard.

I hired Ramon and his crew to take down a leaning retaining wall and put up a new one. It was about 50 feet long and needed to be about 4 feet high. Also, they were building stairs into the hill. Also we asked him to widen our driveway by about 2 feet. All of this took them less that 7 days and came out perfectly. They even built in another step going up to the wall without asking me (we had discussed options of what I could do on my own). It was a great surprise. Very professional, very courteous and amazingly quick. Will use Ramon for and landscaping needs in the future.

I was very happy with the completed landscape project. Bill Sullivan sent 2 extremely good workers who removed a giant yucca plant, added to an existing wall while finishing it with stucco and a flagstone cap, as well as created a beautiful border between the sidewalk and the front yard with attractive-looking pavers. The price was fair and the quality, as well as the aesthetic of the finished work was excellent. I do think Mr. Sullivan knows his construction business, but he is not as responsive or really good at communication as I would have preferred. All in all though, if you are patient and flexible, the work was done very well.

Everything about our landscaping project was five star. Russell had an extraordinary vision for a very mundane piece of dry dirt with aged, ugly foliage. The result is a slice of paradise complete with extras for the senses such as lovely fragrances and beauty for the eyes and peace for the soul. Another plus was the project was done on time and any changes were explained - all of which only added to rather than detracted from the original concept. We have wholeheartedly recommended Bowman Plant and Tree Care Specialists to all our neighbors and friends and are very willing to continue to do so. We could NOT be any happier with our lovely landscaping and thank our lucky stars to have found Bowman's.

We needed help with several tree and landscaping problems with our large front lawn area. Dave's knowledge and expertise has been outstanding in resolving those problems. He truly cares about his client's well-being without any manipulation towards extra-billing opportunities for himself. My wife and I sincerely recommend him highly.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
