Desiree has been outstanding to work with. She is dedicated, skilled and experienced in her craft of writing, editing and content creating. As a graphic designer and a freelancer myself, I have worked with all different types of writers. I always find myself saying, I wish I had Desiree around. The best thing about working with her has been has been the multitude of ideas she has—she always provided me with GREAT content to work with and pretty much was an all around go-getter. I think some of our best work came from social media and e-mail marketing. Whenever I had a layout that just didn’t work out—she was able to edit her content to make it work. We also had a huge jump in consumer engagement with how Desiree engaged with them and from the content she created. I definitely miss having her around!

When I think of Mrs. E, I think of a passionate, kind, and determined person. My high school career, just like those of my peers, often got very hectic. Between playing competitive tennis, managing a tough academic schedule, and creating time for extracurriculars, I often found it difficult to schedule the time necessary to write flawless and impactful college application essays. However, Mrs. E made the writing process painless, and her helpful and reassuring guidance gave me the confidence to succeed. She supported me from the very beginning of the process, when I needed help brainstorming topics and ideas, which can surprisingly be the most challenging part of applying, to making sure I dotted my i's and crossed my t's. Her dedication, wisdom, and expertise proved invaluable in securing my acceptance to Stanford University, and I recommend her wholeheartedly to anyone interested in perfecting their college application experience!

Couldn't be happier with my experience with Katie! She helped me with graduate school application essays that were very short. I wanted to get a lot of information across and she helped me navigate it, so my ideas were concise, genuine and eloquent. I highly suggest meeting with her in person as after just one meeting, we were able to construct an outline for an essay that before had been a mess of a free write. She enjoys doing this work and cares about each project, to the point she researched the specific program I was applying to, so as to more properly gear my personal statement for them. Without a doubt my go to for professional proofreading and editing.

Sean Michael Robinson is a multitalented wonderful professional & amazing artist! We are filmmakers who needed a portrait sketch that plays a key element in our indie feature film. Sean made himself available to us immediately and worked around our schedules. We didn't have an actual photo, so he literally had to recreate something from scratch and he had the patience to work with us! He worked closely with the director of the film and wouldn't leave until it was exactly how he wanted it to look. Sean Michael is wonderful to work with and we would recommend him to all!!! About 3 years ago I stumbled on a flyer advertising a cartooning class taught by Sean Michael Robinson. As I had been an amateur cartoonist since the 8th grade I was intrigued…a friend at the art supply store I go to encouraged me to sign up, stating Sean “has quite a following”. I must say that after the very first class I was more than pleasantly surprised! Sean is one of the best art instructors I’ve ever had. He is engaging, kind, and dynamic. His classes are challenging yet fun! Sean pushes you out of your boundaries to explore your creativity – in a way that is at once exciting and non-threatening. I learned sooo much from Sean about drawing, inking, perspective, color – he covers it all. My personal experience after a few of his classes was that I was very motivated to continue – because Sean’s instruction and encouragement had given me the confidence I needed. This weekend I will be exhibiting my comics, watercolors and linocuts at a local festival and as I told Sean ~ I couldn’t have done it without the little push I got from him! ~Stephanie Morgan

My resumes are written with the five key elements that hiring managers respond positively to: clear, concise, meaningful, quantifiable and targeted. And, I make sure they are visually beautiful to look at so what you end up with is a highly polished written piece that wholly flatters you and your abilities. Working one-on-one with my clients as we define a career campaign and plan-of-action. Resume writing should be a collaborative and learning experience on both parts, which takes time and is why I prefer to work for myself rather than with an agency. You will have my undivided attention, and we will take the time necessary to get it right.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
