Luis came to the house and fixed my mom’s oven. We’re talking about what is at least a twenty-year old Whirlpool Electric Oven which was flashing a F5 error message. This was a potential disaster with the oven going down, because how would my mom cook the turkey later this month for this year's thanksgiving??? Fortunately, Luis was able to diagnose what was going on with the oven and he was able to get the oven working again by resetting and fiddling around with the oven's electronic control board. Wow! You want this guy’s expertise. He is very proud of his work and he obviously very much enjoys helping people with their appliances. From my talking to Luis, found out that he has been in the appliance repair business for 27 years. Luis does a lot of warranty repair work for Lowes and Home Depot. Luis also actually has his main established family business, which is now run by his sons, up in the Valencia and San Fernando area up in Los Angeles, but Luis is now down here in San Diego County to expand his family business further south in the San Diego County area and also to personally get away from the awful Los Angeles traffic. Luis is a good guy. He is a very straight-forward guy who will tell you what he is doing. And he will tell you what to watch out for as to possible future problems for the appliance that he is working on. As already mentioned, Luis was able to get my mom’s oven working again by resetting and fiddling around with the electronic control board, but he also told us to watch out for those electronics going bad again because it is old and therefore those electronics may eventually have to be replaced and he quoted how much that would cost. Fortunately now, my mom has her oven working again and she will be able to cook the thanksgiving turkey this year. Yea! Thank you, Luis! Luis also took a look at the stovetop and diagnosed why one burner was not lighting and quoted a price for replacing the burners and the controls — essentially refurbishing the old stovetop rather than buying a new stovetop. For now, we can live with the old stovetop as it is, but we now have an option via Luis for getting the stovetop into better shape. Anyways, for the primary oven problem, we paid a good affordable price to Luis for fixing the oven and getting his advice. The oven is still good, and it is now fixed thanks to Luis, and we now do NOT have to think about replacing the oven. Luis confirmed my thinking that putting in a new oven and a new stovetop would require cutting up the cabinet and countertop to fit and to put in a new oven and a new stovetop. Better to just repair what we have now. And we’re thankful that Luis can do the work. Never met Luis before and was taking a shot in the dark by connecting with him via the Thumbtack app here. But can tell you that we are very impressed with Luis for his professionalism and expertise.

Steve proved himself to be an excellent choice for me to have some home improvement work taken care. Within 10 minutes of placing my request on Thumb Tac, I had received a response from Steve with an estimate of how much it would cost to do the work site unseen. Within an hour he was onsite looking over the project; we were able to quickly negotiate a fair price to have the work done with Steve including the demolition and haul-away of a weathered wooden shed and the spa pump, heater, and other items stored within it. My primary request was to have a somewhat large, very weathered wood deck demoed and hauled away to a landfill/dump. Steve turned out to be an easy-going, personable, and exceptionally hard worker very knowledgeable in many areas of home improvement, construction and demolition. He carefully and expertly executed the demolition and haul away of the entire wood deck. – A lot of work. Steve worked his a$$ off to demo the deck and haul it away in an efficient, timely, and proper manner. As a result, I asked Steve to also provide a power wash to my house paying special attention to my very weathered front walkway pavers. Throughout the project Steve followed through on every promise and worked especially hard to bring out the best with the power washing of the pavers providing an exceptionally noticeable improvement after removing a lot of baked in dirt, grime, and fungus. There were a couple of times when Steve could not make it back to continue the work at the agreed upon time due to unexpected ‘life’ events, which I understand happens to all of us. However, even given a couple of unexpected hold-ups, he made it to the site every day, kept me in the loop with what was going on, and gave me a discount to compensate for the inconvenience and hold-up in getting to the site due to these interruptions. He went so far as to show up on a Sunday to coat and seal the newly power washed front walkway pavers. All-in-all, it was a great experience working with Steve. He was reliable, a hard worker, very proficient and knowledgeable, and very competitively priced. I look forward to having him back for other home improvements in the near future. Thanks for a great job, Steve! -Bob

Max took his time to completely look at my fridge and troubleshoot the problem (which I had previously been told that the problem was due to a bad computer board ($700) and a bad compressor ($1200)). He found that the compressor was not the problem, it was dried coolant. Solution: flush old coolant out and refill. Most likely the computer board that had been replaced previously wasn't bad. Should have called Serviz the first time and saved money. I will know better next time and use Thumbtack.

We had a leaking dishwasher that apparently had been leaking for some time without our knowledge and caused some water damage. We had him demolish part of our kitchen because the problem was somewhat extensive and put in new cupboards and a kitchen sink, as well as repair some drywall and he did a brilliant job. I will definitely hire Miguel in the future without hesitation. I contacted Thumbtack late Friday afternoon, approx 5-6pm and I saw that I had a response from Miguel by 8.15pm. I replied not expecting a response until the next morning, but instead I had an appt for Miguel to come out and inspect the job the next day and he started work on the following day (Sunday) and completed the job on Monday. Miguel's prices are more than reasonable and I am glad I found him.

This was the best service experience I ever had. My water heater required an adjustment. John cam through and fixed the problem fast and with little charge. He even saved me money by re-using the existing hardware, which was still in very good condition. Rate was reasonable and service was top-notch. I will reach out to John first in the future if I require any other services.

Don Bill was my handyman in Hawaii for an under equipped house both electircally & plumbing wise that had been hit by a tidal wave so had systems that were constantly breaking down. He was a genius at creating ways to keep systems going with minimal expense. I called him the bobby-pin, duct tape, gum king of repairs. Sincerely, Cathrine Grace

Greg was going to replace the treads and risers on my front stairs (wood). Instead he created a masterpiece. Despite running into several problems with rotten stringers and termite damage, Greg still remained close to the estimated time they would take to repair. I cannot say I was not forewarned about unseen issues. The impressive thing is Greg does not just tell you about them, he shows them to you, and gives you the pros and cons of fixing the problems or leaving them alone. He and I went to the lumber store where he showed me various types of wood we could use and explained the differences between them. That way I could make an informed decision, choose according to my budget, and see exactly where my money was being spent and the amount I was spending. I had always wanted natural, unpainted wood stairs, and that is what I got. A lovely golden cedar oil base stain and sealer with non-skid additive and I have the nicest stairs in the park. Greg also leveled them (they were not level when I hired him), removed the ugly metal runners from the treads and sides, and ensured that everything was within code. I cannot stress enough how friendly, knowledgable and professional he is. His rates are more than reasonable, he is a pleasure to work with, and I would encourage you to give him a call for your next project. Greg is also replacing some flex pipe for me to bring my copper pipes up to code. A man of many talents, I am more than happy to recommend him to friends, neighbors, family and Thumbtack users.

OK – I have had good work done by Excel / Justin in the past. He has done excellent inside knotty pine wood refinishing with lacquer. I also had a good experience with kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom painting. He has also done good work on wood fences - both repair and staining. He really knows his paint smarts and does not like to do a “just get by” job. Works hard and fast but not always the most timely. I would use him again.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does refrigerator repair cost?

Refrigerator repair generally costs a fraction of the price of a new fridge and shouldhave your appliance up and running again in no time. The problems your refrigerator is experiencing and the parts required to fix it will affect your repair costs. Where you live can affect labor rates, which will raise or lower your costs. Here are some examples of average costs:

    • Diagnostic fees: $50-$100. Repair pros often have a service call fee or diagnostic fee to account for their time traveling to your location with all their tools to assess the problem. If you choose to have them repair the fridge, most pros then credit this fee toward your repair cost.
    • Parts: $20-$500. A new compressor averages $200, an icemaker $300, and computerized components such as touch screens and control boards average $300 or more.
    • Basic repairs: $180-$400, including parts. This price range can include repairing the evaporator or fan motor.

    How long do fridges last?

Refrigerators can last 10 to 20 years, although the most common lifespan is about 13 years. If your fridge is acting up, consider its current age when deciding whether to invest in repairs or buy a new one. Common easy fixes include faulty thermostats, dirty coils and clogged drain lines. Thermostats and dirty coils can be generally be fixed for an average cost of $80-$100. Clogged drain lines, which usually cause leaks, can often be fixed for under $200.

More complex refrigeration repairs such as replacing a bad compressor or replenishing low refrigerant can cost more because of expensive parts and higher labor. A new compressor costs an average of $200, not including labor. If labor is an average of $75-$100 per hour, and the repair takes 3 hours, you’re looking at roughly $500. Consider the age and purchase cost of your fridge; investing $350 in a $600 fridge that is 8 years old may not be cost-effective.
