Jason was amazing at our event today which was a surprise party with over 30 people. He sounded amazing, he interacted with our guests & asked if they liked his song selections & if they had any requests. I love that he not only interacted with our guests, but he also remembered their names and addressed them by name at the end of the night. We didnt have a shaded area for him, but that was ok - he made sure he was covered. He played continuously, only to take short (emphasis on short) water breaks. I highly recommend his services & will recommend him to everyone I know. Thanks Jason!!

I have worked with Bill at countless live dates and recording gigs, especially as part of the Erick Macek band. Bill is a professional and serious musician who gives his all every moment of every gig. He knows when to hold back and when to unleash, tailoring his performance to the nature of the audience and the venue. As a sideman he is invaluable, and if I am ever in need of solo guitar performance I know who I am going to call.

I have had multiple professional interactions with Ms J-7. She is a delight to work with; takes direction well, is incredibly talented and professional, as well as supremely happy. Quirky by nature, she is always a vibrant addition to any event or party. She comes highly recommended.

Marcela's band Honey Rock played at our wedding 3 years ago, and we still talk about what a great evening of dancing we enjoyed! They played everything from The Stones to Michael Jackson to Adele, so there was something for everyone. Marcela even took some time to learn our special song by Van Morrison so we could have our "bride and groom first dance". We still seek out Marcela and her band on occasion and go for a night out of listening and enjoying. They're fabulous! Tim and Susi Haugh

Gary was excellent, really enjoyed working with him. He was easy to communicate with and very accommodating. We hired him to set up karaoke last minute for a Christmas party. Everything went great. The set up and equipment was top notch and added a great time to the party. Thank you, Gary!

Ron and his musicians were outstanding!! I hired them for a '40s Big Band Pary for 2 hours and did the deliver! They were very much accommodating to our residents and the staff. Very upbeat group of men who sang and danced with our residents, which made all the ladies very happy! The music was spot on and made us all feel like we really were in the 1940s. Very happy with the performance and their attitudes, absolutely one of the best!

My son Max has been taking lessons with Ed for several years now and we couldn't be happier. Ed is an awesome music teacher with many talents. His knowledge of playing in a band has been a great help for my son. Ed will jump in and play the bass line with Max if needed. I love that he can teach vocals, guitar, bass, and drums and get in there and jam with my son, too. Ed's awesome! I'd highly recommend him if you're looking for a music teacher. Terry

We were so glad we chose this band for our wedding. They were spectacular from the solo guitar entrance music, hosting the event, to closing the dance-floor down late night. I don't know how they kept the energy up for the whole night but they played till the very end. They definitely made our big party complete! PS -- I don't like Journey but the band was so good even I sang along!

Hired Chicken Wire for a friends birthday party and they were a major hit! We had a blast dancing to old time rock songs. The band was engaging and entertaining! Our friends had a great time but most especially the guest of honor, our friend, whose birthday we were celebrating, said it was one of the best nights of his life. He got to sing with Chicken Wire! Highly recommend them for your event!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

  • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
  • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
  • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.
