Jose was on time, courtious, and very easy to work with. He completed the job in less time than was quoted. There was one plant that was hiding an irrigation pipe and it was damaged, however Jose fixed it and I wouldn't have known anything happened had he not told me. His honesty and quality of work are excellent. Once we are ready to put new landscaping in we will be contacting him again.

I just had Chris Mingo of Chris Home Improvement clear out my back yard of dead shrubs and plants, a couple trees and miscellaneous junk that had accumulated over the years. Chris and his crew worked non-stop for one and a half days and even took two additional items to the dump for us. He trimmed up the trees and shrubs we were keeping. They had a huge job ahead of them and just got to work and kept at it until they were done. They came prepared with saws, clippers, chain saws, shovels and brooms and a huge truck, complete with orange traffic cones. They swept down all sidewalks and patios before they left. I am really happy with his work.

I had a lady come by for the initial estimate. Her name was Jaeleah. She was an estimate manager. She was very nice and asked a lot of questions and took down a lot of notes and even left me with a business card. From there within the hour I received an email regarding the estimate and availability. I then, had a scheduling manager contact me to confirm details and day along with time. On the day of the actual clean up, I had a lead landscaper by the name of Catarino ( Cat for short) come with a young man named Kevin, Cat did not speak perfect English but he could communicate and tried very hard, Kevin spoke perfect English and helped me to confirm what I thought Cat was saying. The guys started the job which consisted of removing grass and weeds on a 3500 sq foot lot. I figured it would take the guys 2 days to do that kind of job. When I got home after work around 6pm the guys were actually finishing up. I mean, I was shocked. I walked the lot with them and we went over ideas and I mean I was so amazed by how hard and fast they got this job done. As soon as my husband gets back in town we are going to confirm what our next plant of action will be. Cat recommended I install new more drought resistant sod along with some gorgeous flowers he showed me that compliment the color of my home really well. He even showed me pictures of other sod and landscape designs he has done in the past and the work was exquisite. For the quality of work these guys provide and the professionalism these guys could easily be charging double if not triple the prices they charge. I am thankful I found you guys. Thanks for all the hard work you all did for us! We are excited for whats to come.

Jose was the first to respond to my request for someone to perform concrete installation in the courtyard of our home (which was previously filled with dirt and plants) and he offered to come out the same day to provide an estimate. Not only did he show up on time, but he provided an affordable estimate and said he could start the following day (a huge plus!). My stepdad who's been in the commercial construction industry for 40+ years was there for the meeting as well and was thoroughly impressed with Jose's knowledge when discussing the his strategy for job. The day of the project, Jose and his crew (who were also outstanding) showed up on time and did an AMAZING job. I couldn't be happier with the final results. The crew was professional and cleaned and hauled everything away when they were done. If you're looking for construction services, I would highly recommend Jose's services!

Greg's team were all amazing, friendly and experienced professionals! They were on time, successfully completed a very big job in just one day and demonstrated extraordinary excellence in completely cleaning up a large front and back yard that had been neglected for many years. Highlights included removing several big cedar trees, extracting countless jade plants and cleaning up yard waste from cutting back ice plant and trimming bird of paradise and bougainvillea. GM Landscaping is THE BEST and I give them my highest recommendation! I look forward to working with them again!

Mr. Ruiz and his helper did a good job of mowing our lawns. He checked our sprinkler system to ensure it was putting water on the lawns where it needed to be. He replaced some broken sprinkler heads. I was pleased with the work that was done. He will return to do lawn care again. Thank You.

My irrigation pipes burst and caused water to drain from underneath my driveway next to my lawn. Mateo Pedro (MP) was quick to respond when I posted the job and he met with me the same day at 5pm. He dug up part of the lawn and provided a preliminary assessment on his own time. MP was kind, courteous, and professional. He quoted me a flat price that was very fair considering the work that had to be done without knowing the entirety of the problem. He took the time to evaluate my irrigation system and provided tips on improving lawn maintenance. I contracted with MP and he showed up a 7am the next morning and fixed the problem that day and after completing the repair he did a great job of cleaning up. I would definitely recommend MP if I have any additional handyman work in the future. Great Job Mateo!

Charlie did a good amount of landscaping and softscaping on my backyard this year. He also did some fencing, paint jobs, and installed pavers for me. He is reliable, takes directions well, and his prices are competitive. ~ Dan V. San Diego, CA

Ronsi's team was excellent. I requested a quote Sunday night, they came Monday to do an estimate, and by Friday noon they finished the project. They fixed my lawn, replace parts and take care of trimming my trees. Ronsi taught me how to take care of my sprinklers, how to change them, fix them, where to buy the parts. How often to water the plants. I think that know I feel that I can take care of my lawn. I would hire them again.

We had a fairly large front and back yard cleanup project that we hired VP’s Landscaping for. Vincente and his crew showed up on time and were very professional. He made several suggestions as to which plants to keep and which couldn’t be saved, as well as which flowers to plant in the back yard. All across the board VP’s Landscaping was very professional, the quality of the work is excellent, and he is very knowledgeable. We’ve hired him for weekly maintenance.

We will definitely consider using him again in the future for our home projects. Thanks again, Jaime!!!

Job well done within 2-wk, fast and efficient! Ronsi looks like a college student, while his strength and expertise are beyond college students. Grass paving is a very hard work, while he just did it seamlessly, effortlessly and perfectly. He showed professionalism that he wouldn't take a break until he finished the entire part of the work properly. I felt really happy that he always said "we will make you happy, we will do whatever you want". Actually he not met my requests, but also did them better, so he's really smart. I thought I need an additional watering timer for the grass, as many people suggested, but Ronsi did it better, he did not add another one, but just took the full usage of my current one and it worked just fine. Ronsi is very responsible as he is willing to come back and make sure the irrigation system can keep normal running and make some optimal adjustment as needed. So far my grass are growing green, I am very happy Ronsi did a good job. I would strongly recommend Ronsi if you need a professional for your home yard work.

Redid my yard & did a beautiful job. Removed all the grass & bushes. Did two shades of rock and planted mostly succulents. Around the house, planted different plants and used black mulch. Everyone stopped & commented what a transition & how beautiful. Ramon Fuentes of Green World Synthetics is so easy to work with as he listens to what you the customer wants. I highly recommend him.

I was very happy with the completed landscape project. Bill Sullivan sent 2 extremely good workers who removed a giant yucca plant, added to an existing wall while finishing it with stucco and a flagstone cap, as well as created a beautiful border between the sidewalk and the front yard with attractive-looking pavers. The price was fair and the quality, as well as the aesthetic of the finished work was excellent. I do think Mr. Sullivan knows his construction business, but he is not as responsive or really good at communication as I would have preferred. All in all though, if you are patient and flexible, the work was done very well.

I had flower beds around my front and back patios. They had weeds and rocks and were just a mess. Enrique came to my house to check out the work that needed to be done. He quoted me a very fair price to do the work. He really did a nice job cleaning up the flower beds and putting in real nice succulent plants. Then around the plants he put in redwood chips. Now my front and back patios look beautiful. I would recommend Enrique for any landscaping job. He is honest and does great work.

Alex did an excellent job trimming my trees for a reasonable price. He and his crew arrived exactly when he was scheduled to begin work. He and his crew worked very hard and completed the job in one morning. Furthermore they were very careful with other plants in our garden and did a thorough job cleaning up afterward. I highly recommend him.

LandEscape was great. They diagnosed a broken pipe somewhere under our patio so they re-ran a different line and capped off the broken one. Also replaces a lot of sprinkler heads and made sure every plant was getting watered. I was impressed with his ingenuity of how to work around different issues he encountered. He worked long hours for 2.5 days to fix my sprinkler issues. Hard working. I would recommend him to anyone.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.

How much does it cost to landscape your front yard?

Prices for landscaping your front yard can range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the scale of your front yard project. Your landscaping price will reflect how much change you implement, how much labor is required, and the cost of materials.

Landscaping is typically made up of softscaping and hardscaping. Softscaping refers to selecting trees, bushes, flowers and plants to achieve a desired aesthetic and to meet goals such as having a drought-tolerant yard. Hardscaping refers to moving earth, installing structures, and putting in decorative stonework, sidewalks or lighting. For softscaping, you may want to hire a landscape designer to consult on your plants and layout, and then do the digging and planting yourself or hire a gardner to handle the heavy lifting. A landscape designer’s hourly rate may range from $50 to $150 or more. If you want a turnkey approach, meaning someone who works with you to create the vision and then executes all the work, landscaping pricing will typically come down to a cost per square foot rather than an hourly rate. It’s a solid investment: Great landscaping can add up to 28 percent value to your home.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
