Jose did a very good job. It involved removal of old shrubs and plants on side of my garage and driveway, preparing the soil, fertilizing, then planting ground cover. Next, between the driveway and the plantings, he installed a crushed rock area, which involved digging out soil to allow a substantial layer of rock laid upon heavy ground paper. On the other side of the house, he planted additional ground cover along a 60 ft. bed. He also found several watering heads that needed adjustment or replacement. He worked at a steady and deliberate pace and completed the job expeditiously. I would recommend Jose and intend to hire him again.

Chris and his brother Taylor, are amazing.. Absolutely incredible.. They are what you don't see that much of in our country anymore.. They care, they do fantastic work ( the first time), they work hard, they have the good old American "can-do" attitude , they are prompt and punctual, they actually communicate and stay in touch with you, they go the "extra mile", and you can't beat this... They are fairly priced .. I will use their services over and over again... And I will heartily recommend them... 5 star !!.. Do yourself a favor... Don't go anywhere else ...

Jose was the first to respond to my request for someone to perform concrete installation in the courtyard of our home (which was previously filled with dirt and plants) and he offered to come out the same day to provide an estimate. Not only did he show up on time, but he provided an affordable estimate and said he could start the following day (a huge plus!). My stepdad who's been in the commercial construction industry for 40+ years was there for the meeting as well and was thoroughly impressed with Jose's knowledge when discussing the his strategy for job. The day of the project, Jose and his crew (who were also outstanding) showed up on time and did an AMAZING job. I couldn't be happier with the final results. The crew was professional and cleaned and hauled everything away when they were done. If you're looking for construction services, I would highly recommend Jose's services!

Greg and his crew attacked the job of clearing cacti from my yard and stumping a tree. They were cautious, diligent and energetic. His crew worked effectively as a team and completed the job, including thorough clean up, within the estimated time. GM Tree Service and Landscaping provides excellent service.

Brian was very professional, fast, hard working, and quick in getting back to me. He gave me a fare price for the scope of work to be done. He showed up on time and ready to work. He was very easy to talk to, and work with. He is very knowledgeable about different trees and their care. We definitely will be calling on his help, experience and expertise in the very near future. He is a third generation arborist and has pride and passion for what he does. This was very refreshing for someone so young...

I hired Coastline to plant trees, install irrigation, and do all of the planting for my backyard renovation project. The pricing was very competitive, and the quality of work was off the charts. Omar and his team were absolutely amazing to work with!! The team from Coastline easily handled everything I could throw at them. From design changes to working around other trades, and a homeowner providing most of the materials - you name it and they crushed it. The care and attention to detail of the planting was amazing. The irrigation has all my plantings well covered and the install was super clean and with high quality product. In addition to the general planting we built a fairy garden for my daughter. Omar and his team set the walkway, birdbath and fountain. They also made the dry river/rock path and handled all of the plantings. It's the most adorable natural play space ever. All of the crews that were on site over the course of the project were great to work with. Everyone of them was respectful, clean, and courteous. They were great with my kids, my dog, and everyday my property was left looking neat and clean - even for a construction site. The only regret I had on my project was not meeting Omar and Coastline before I had hired out the work for other parts of my renovation. I seriously can't say enough great things about them. If you are a home or business owner with a landscape plan to execute on - Omar and Coastline are your guys.

Vicente has been so helpful throughout the whole process of redoing our front and backyard. From the very beginning, he responds quickly to emails or text messages. He has offered suggestions and his professional opinion on everything we wanted done. Him and his team have been on time everyday and I can tell the pride Vicente has in his work. He added decorative rock, fixed our irritation system, installed sod, a vegetable garden and star Jasmine to our yard. We are really happy with everything and very glad we chose him to take on this project. We will continue using his services to maintain our yard.

Redid my yard & did a beautiful job. Removed all the grass & bushes. Did two shades of rock and planted mostly succulents. Around the house, planted different plants and used black mulch. Everyone stopped & commented what a transition & how beautiful. Ramon Fuentes of Green World Synthetics is so easy to work with as he listens to what you the customer wants. I highly recommend him.

Great work. I had John come out for a one time mow, edge, and trim. He went above my expectations and did the job right. John mowed the back twice to get the grass to the right height as it was over grown. The bushes and hedges were the same and This guy did stop until there where right. Based on my one encounter, I would have this guy over for a beer! He doesn’t cut corners or rush as if he had somewhere else to be. Honest, fair and humble. People like JOHN are few and far between. Just hiring him now because you will not find a better business to talk care of you lawn care needs.

I needed someone to come trim 2 extremely tall (over 25 ft.) out-of-control palm trees. Enrique came to the house the same day I contacted him. From the first handshake, I knew he was an extremely honest, knowledgeable guy who really cares about plants and trees. His price quote was very reasonable and he left the area cleaner than when he and his assistant began the job. Not only that, but I hired his wife to clean my house and she is fantastic! Enrique was back at my house yesterday afternoon to discuss another landscaping project, putting down new gravel on the parkway adjoining my driveway and really delineating the space, and again, he just took a look at the space after measuring and was able to give me a very decent quote for the work involved. I have full trust in this honest, very professional guy with a great work ethic. I would recommend him to anyone without hesitation.

ATS was on time and extremely professional. They really took the time to prep the ground foundation, scraping away about 5 inches of existing soil, dirt, pebbles and sod, and infilling with drainage pebbles, weed prevention fabric, decomposed granite, the high quality beautiful turf, and sand. They thoroughly cleaned up the work area, and answered all my questions about the installation process and how to maintain the turf. They made sure the area had positive and effective drainage as well. I would highly recommend Athletic Turf Solutions for both residential and professional installations. I am extremely satisfied with the installation and the customer service and communication. Thank you especially to James and Roberto for your attention to detail. A+++ business, honest, professional, and reasonably priced!

Finally someone who listened to us and was knowledgable about our situation. He was in the middle in terms of pricing, but, on the high end in terms of quality and reliability. We trusted him, and it also helped that after removing some diseased trees, he would plant the new ones for us. When we asked other tree trimmers about planting, they said no, just wanted to cut trees. JJ's is full service. We will definitely be using him in the future!

Everything about our landscaping project was five star. Russell had an extraordinary vision for a very mundane piece of dry dirt with aged, ugly foliage. The result is a slice of paradise complete with extras for the senses such as lovely fragrances and beauty for the eyes and peace for the soul. Another plus was the project was done on time and any changes were explained - all of which only added to rather than detracted from the original concept. We have wholeheartedly recommended Bowman Plant and Tree Care Specialists to all our neighbors and friends and are very willing to continue to do so. We could NOT be any happier with our lovely landscaping and thank our lucky stars to have found Bowman's.

We needed help with several tree and landscaping problems with our large front lawn area. Dave's knowledge and expertise has been outstanding in resolving those problems. He truly cares about his client's well-being without any manipulation towards extra-billing opportunities for himself. My wife and I sincerely recommend him highly.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.

How much does it cost to landscape your front yard?

Prices for landscaping your front yard can range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the scale of your front yard project. Your landscaping price will reflect how much change you implement, how much labor is required, and the cost of materials.

Landscaping is typically made up of softscaping and hardscaping. Softscaping refers to selecting trees, bushes, flowers and plants to achieve a desired aesthetic and to meet goals such as having a drought-tolerant yard. Hardscaping refers to moving earth, installing structures, and putting in decorative stonework, sidewalks or lighting. For softscaping, you may want to hire a landscape designer to consult on your plants and layout, and then do the digging and planting yourself or hire a gardner to handle the heavy lifting. A landscape designer’s hourly rate may range from $50 to $150 or more. If you want a turnkey approach, meaning someone who works with you to create the vision and then executes all the work, landscaping pricing will typically come down to a cost per square foot rather than an hourly rate. It’s a solid investment: Great landscaping can add up to 28 percent value to your home.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
