Efficient team included Chris, my main contact. That was very reassuring because I knew that what I had communicated and agreed to was going to get done. They trimmed a brunch of tree/shrubs growing into my backyard from the neighbors. It looks tons better, although the neighbors yard remains a jungle. Out front, they did a great job trimming a large tree. Chris also gave me advice about replanting the root bound dirt patch below the tree. I'm hopeful that with the improved light from the major trim and added soil (which Chris assured me would not hurt the roots) I will be able to once again enjoy my front yard's aesthetic. Highly knowledgeable, very friendly, very responsive. I'm keeping this number to use these guys next time!

Met with Alfonso yesterday to get a quote on doing some yard work. I needed to lace a few trees (ash/camphor). I also needed to remove a few trees (large pine/large Brazilian pepper/medium juniper/small star pine). And just do a general yard clean up (removing dead leaves and shrubs). Alfonso was courteous and knowledgeable and gave us a great price. They came in at a very competitive rate and we chose them over quite a few other companies including: Higuera Tree Care (next in line - really nice guys!) First Class Tree Service (slightly higher $$) Arbor Task Tree Service (slightly higher $$, just wanted to cut everything and now) Select Tree Service & Landscape (most $$$) All Access Tree Care (no response) Moy's Landscaping (no response) Not based upon price alone -- but you can start to figure out who wants to just "remove" or take down certain items just to make more money (versus timing it right so you aren't trimming/lacing trees at the wrong time of the year). These guys came out this morning right on time and got to work so quickly. They pretty much completed most of the work before lunch time!! In the afternoon they finished some of the lacing work and yard cleanup. An absolutely fabulous job!! Thank you Alfonso and team -- so glad I found you guys here and look forward to working with you again when we need our trees laced/cleaned up (Y)

I had an excellent experience with James Laan and his tree care team! They vertical-pruned three huge Ficus trees away from my roof yet kept them looking natural, and also trimmed three tall Queen Palms. They arrived when scheduled, communicated well from start to finish, and cleaned up completely afterward. I will definitely use Laan's tree care for all my tree pruning needs from now on!

I hired Jose from Custom Construction to clean up and haul away a mass quantity of debris from a backyard that had been untouched for a little over 2 years. He also trimmed back an overgrowth of acacia trees. Jose and his crew did a wonderful job at a reasonable price. I will definitely be hiring him again in the future.

Fantastic experience with R&R. Ricardo was very responsive and flexible with dates and times. The day of the trimming, R&R rolled up with his crew (4) which in included the chipper and the actual tree trimmer (Efrain) at 8:00 am sharp. I was impressed how Efrain climbed up into each tree and carefully selected and trimmed each branch to the way we agreed upon. The crew was careful not to disturb the rest of the landscape and vehicles near the job. I highly recommend R&R for their knowledge, work ethics and price.

Kevin and his crew were outstanding. We had several large old dead and diseased trees that needed to come down. This was a very technical and labor intensive job that took two full days. They worked safely, made sure that they were meeting our needs, and left the job complete and cleaned up to a very high standard. I will have them back for more tree work in the future and highly recommend them to all who want quality tree service, a fair and honest price, and a safe conscientious work crew.

Brian did an excellent job trimming and topping my trees. I have had other trimmers who did not do a thorough job, and my birches were struggling. Brian was on time, cleaned everything up, his prices are great, and he left me a very happy customer!

Juan was AMAZING to say the least! Our backyard was in a very poor state, looked like a jungle! Juan's team took out all the weeds, cut down the two trees we had and cemented our whole back yard, it looks like a new house! He said it would take three days do complete the job and he really took less than two and a half. His prices are very affordable and his team is very professional. Definitely would hire him again.

Just had a fantastic experience with JSJ Services. They trimmed my ficus tree from a messy mop of overgrown branches and berries into a beautiful tree with dappled sunlight coming through. They also cut back my Angel Trumpet tree. They did a first rate job, were on time, respectful, and left the site cleaner than they found it. I've asked them to quote more projects as I'd love to work with them again.

I called to have 6 podocarpus 24 inch box trees from one part of my backyard to another. They did an outstanding job re-planting the trees. I also had them bring an additional 2 from a nursery they work with and plant them as well. These guys are responsive and do great work. Thank you again! The trees look great!

I contracted TLC to maintain a few rental properties that I had managed back in 2012. The crew was very respectful of our tenants and always did a great job on the grounds. We mainly used them for weekly maintenance on the grounds but also had them trim trees and aerate the lawns every few months, as well as planting seasonals. As far as working around schedule changes, they were always flexible when we had other contractors on-site. I have since relocated to Northern Cal but would highly recommend them.

After I was introduced to Joseph and his tree company, I had him do one job for me. After that, he did all of my tree work! And as a former Grounds Manager at Point Loma College, that was a lot of work!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.
