I usually teach kids, but I can teach students of any age. I have some adult students too.
Chess With Tony
Introduction: I am a passionate and dedicated chess player. In high school, I was the president of the Bellarmine College Preparatory chess team. In college, I played recreationally at the University of Pennsylvania.
I have been playing since I was four years old. I received a wide variety of private instruction from even grandmasters, namely Larry Evans and his Mountain Lake Chess Camp. I am familiar with a number of teaching techniques to teach tactics, strategy, and pattern recognition.
I am especially great teaching kids, and had a number of students throughout middle school and high school. While I was competing, I held a 1600 rating. I am now 24 years old.

My 5-year old daughter just had her first lesson with Tony yesterday. Five star rating, unquestionable:
- Easy planning & communication to set it up with Tony. He also arrived on time (sorry, this may seem obvious but these days that's often forgotten)
- He was very sweet and patient with my 5yo
- The first basic moves were explained using metafors like "trains" and "lasers" (= great for children)
- In as little as an hour, they were playing a very basic game against each other, using only two pieces. I could see my daughter's brain working hard :)
Teaching chess is a labor of love for Tony. It's not just a quick instruction for cash. My daughter had a great experience and she immediately agreed to a follow-up lesson. She's been telling everybody that "she played chess" and even drew the board & pieces at home. Success!

I have been taking lessons with Tony for the past several weeks and am having the best time! I am 23, and I didnt even know the names of the pieces before our first meeting, but Tony quickly and patiently taught me the basics. He is very friendly and his style of teaching is very engaging - it makes me like chess a lot more and I always look forward to our lessons!
