Pete has been helping us with our very energetic and curious black lab for about the past ten months. He has come to our house for trainings and we have been able to join him and our pup on training walks. Pete helps train our pup and also takes him on dog walks 3x a week. Pete's walks are no ordinary walk in the park! Our pup could be on an outing up in the trails or could have spent the afternoon swimming!! Our pup loves Pete and is always excited to head off on an adventure with him. We have also been able to board our pup with Pete which was a great experience as we knew our pup would be loved and cared for exceptionally well. We are fortunate to have found a skilled and caring dog trainer!

Pete came to help a first time dog trainer (myself) with my new rescue dog. Just as he says is needed for success he was calm cool collected. He gave a lot of ritual information to help with the relationship of me and the dog. She already does better on walks (yes same day) with using the prong collar. We worked with her on place and the same day she is using the spot to relax which has made her less anxious! Very knowledgable and is straightforward on how to train your dog and most importantly yourself! We are key to our dogs success.

Pete is an outstanding dog trainer. We only needed one lesson and he showed me what I need to do to get my dog to walk without pulling, stay in her bed for an extended period of time and to calm down when people come over. He showed me and left it up to me to practice the exercises with her. She has really improved and now the walks are enjoyable for both of us. I highly recommend Pete and his services. He even read my 2 year old grandaughter a book when we were done!

Tammy is a wonderful dog trainer! I have had my dog for three years now. In the first year of adopting my dog from rescue center; he had a lot of anxiety and bark non- stop. In about seven months with working with the techniques Tammy would suggest he no longer barks when I'm not home. I encourage and recommend Tammy as your dog trainer . She has a lot of knowledge on the psychology of dog behavior , and you will see your dog have major improvements.

Tammy is an amazing dog trainer. We had our puppy do board and train with her and our puppy came back better than we could have hoped. Our puppy came back crate trained, socialized, and taught her all the basics. She even followed up with private lessons to teach all the commands.

My Newfypoo pup Jelly Bean is a handful, especially considering I have never had a dog before. I was fortunate enough to stumble on John Vinton's site, after being dropouts from Sirius group puppy training. His technique is unique as he does not advocate stuffing the dog with never ending treats. Instead, consistent reinforcement of commands accompanied with appropriate overwhelming praise when deserved. We're only 3 lessons in. I am so proud of my Bean, especially when compared to other dogs we meet on our walks. We both still have a lot to learn and with the help of "A Better Dog Trainer" I know we'll be successful.

Debbie DeMello has helped me a lot in dealing with behavioral issues I was having with my dog. She is caring, direct, and knows what makes dogs tick! She helped me with practical suggestions, training tips, and follow-up. She also teaches small classes which I am continuing to attend with my dog. Great trainer!

Susan is an expert. She very observant, respectful and sensitive . You can tell she loves her work and your pets. I have two very senior dogs who can be aggressive with an overly active puppy. She has taught each of them skills (us too!) and we are no longer afraid to have them engage. I have recommended her to my friends already. We all look forward to her visit.

We have been sending our dog to Susan at Nu Pawspective for about a year now. Susan is an intelligent trainer with a "dog whisperer" instinct for dogs. Our dog loves going with Susan every day and always comes home exhausted and happy. We are thankful to have someone whom we trust to care for our dog as much as Susan does.

Rusty has exceeded above and beyond my hopes for a trainer. After our first complimentary consultation for him to assess my pups behavior as well as for me to assess whether Rusty was the right trainer for us, I knew I had landed on one of the best. He possesses an incredible wealth of knowledge that he conveys efficiently and proficiently giving you the tools to truly carry over the work done in the sessions to every day life with your dog. He is professional, patient, and creative in his training, not to mention a true dog whisperer. While I originally sought Rusty's guidance for foundational obedience training and separation anxiety, it evolved to using him to assist in the journey of training my pup to be a therapy dog. Along the way, my dog suffered an traumatic experience while under the care of a sitter and adopted fear behaviors that had not existed before. I called Rusty right away for advice and help. We adjusted our sessions to address the immediate concerns so they would not become permanent. He was a complete blessing and my pup is successfully on the mend. Rusty is so well-versed in many areas of dog-training (he's your one-stop shop!) Whether you need short-term assistance, long-term, or varying areas of concerns, look no further. You don't need to take my word for it, just take advantage of the complimentary consultation and see for yourself. Absolutely no regrets here.

Rusty is a patient, calm and well-informed trainer who was extremely helpful in helping us with our dog. After adopting Minnie, a shih-tzu mix puppy, from a rescue, we quickly realized she had some issues she had developed from her life experience so far. She was incredibly fearful and reactive to nearly anything that moved. She was also completely untrusting of any people coming in our house. Rusty was able to spend the time necessary to develop a relationship with Minnie. He then gave us the tools we needed to help Minnie become more confident. I love that Rusty didn't just train our dog, but trained us to train our dog. This helped Minnie develop faster and helped us feel more confident in many situations. Rusty even setup controlled situations for us to work on our own techniques and also see how Minnie would react in different situations. I really can't recommend Rusty enough. He is friendly and patient plus knowledgable and confidence inspiring. Plus all of his techniques are in the positive training style which feels great to use with your dog.

We haven’t really begun yet but it was obvious during our initial (free) meeting that Rusty is a knowledgeable and caring trainer. Our dachshund/lab mix responded to Rusty’s calm demeanor and figured out she wasn’t being rewarded for jumping up and immediately calmed down. We liked that Rusty intends to bring his own dog along to help ours practice her new non reactive skills!

Emily is fantastic! She began working with our 6 month old weim only 4 weeks ago, and he is already a different dog. He has learned to be better on the leash, developing better response to commands such as sit and stay. Emily truly listens to the needs of the family and is very responsive to the individual dog needs. She is dependable, responsible and when you meet her, you can just feel her passion and dedication to puppy training. She sent us regular daily updates about our puppy's progress, including video clips. When we first started, our puppy was shy of other dogs, but after only 2 weeks, he was braver and more assertive in the dog park with other pets. Emily is a pleasure to work with and we have just signed up for another 4 weeks of training to continue building on the progress our doggies has made. She is down to earth and caring. She is also not afraid to say when something isn't working, which we truly appreciated. Our dog didn't like the halti leash, so after a couple of weeks of training, Emily came up with a different leash option and was very honest about the reasons for the change. It's refreshing to work with such a professional. Thank you, Emily, for all your dedication and hard work!

Amazing. There is simply no other word to describe Shauna's talent with dogs. Her ability to train dogs in an astoundingly short time is something that must be witnessed to be believed. I recommend attending her class just to watch her work whether you have a dog or not, but beware - if you have a dog, you will end up signing up for classes - and it will be one of the best things you can do for your animal.

Emily is one of the most passionate and knowledgeable dog trainers I have ever met. I contracted her when I adopted a rescue with severe separation anxiety and who never had any formal training. Emily is very skilled at engaging the whole family in the training, answering all manner of questions. She provided very helpful guidance on what to work on first and how to work with our pup successfully. She also gave great feedback on what to look for in the food we give the puppy. Phoebe is an animal behavior miracle worker and the best in the industry as far as I m concerned! I cannot say enough good things about working with her! In fact, I don t think words could do justice to how highly I regard her and how positively impact she has been to my life and my family (dog-children included, of course!)! I have two German Shepherd Dogs who are the loves of my life, but they can certainly be a handful without proper training, reinforcement and care. When I first met Phoebe, I only had my female GSD, Ranger, who was about 1yr old at the time and she owned me , so to speak (completely my fault). Thankfully, Phoebe was able to correct some of Ranger s bad behavior s (again, my fault), train me on being a good leader, and get her basic obedience in check, all while maintaining Ranger s personality and attitude . Soon after Phoebe began working with Ranger, my family decided to get a second GSD, Stryker. This time, we worked with Phoebe throughout the entire process of obtaining a new dog, i.e., selecting the right breeder; puppy testing to choose a puppy with the best temperament for my family; selecting a great veterinarian; proper nutrition and supplements; preventing injuries; choosing safe toys; socializing the new puppy; and, introducing the new puppy to the family and to my other dog, Ranger. Once Stryker was old enough, Phoebe trained him extensively and he is now just about the perfect dog, a gentle giant! I now get compliments almost daily on the behavior of my dogs during walks, but to be completely honest, if my dogs were not as well-trained, I probably wouldn't be able to walk them at all. Finally, to top it all off, Phoebe is just a great human being with a work ethic like no other. She has stayed in my home several times with my dogs for extended periods of time and not only have I always returned to clean, better-behaved dogs, but also to an immaculate house! I could go on forever. If anyone is on the fence about hiring her, feel free to call or email me. Choosing Phoebe to work with your beloved dogs will be one of the wisest decisions you make for both your dogs and your family!

Phoebe has been an absolute joy to work with. She takes our dog out usually twice a week for some play/adventure time. She proactively finds new places to take him especially if the parks don’t many dogs for him to play with. I get picture updates every time she takes him out, she's captured some great shots of him in action. Phoebe has been extremely trust worthy. I know that our boy is in good hands. There was an unfortunate situation at a dog park, where another dog was being aggressive toward our dog, she kept him safe and took him away from that surrounding. She even bought him treats and a toy, she’s extremely thoughtful! She is also very knowledgeable about dogs in general and training methods. I’d be happy to discuss my experience with Phoebe to any potential clients.

Phoebe B trained our German Shepard dog and of all the trainers we have used she made the most progress in helping the dog to become more comfortable with different people and situations. She also took care of both our dogs and the dogs are very excited when they see Phoebe. Phoebe is very personable, open, and patient. We liked her a lot and had she not moved away from our area, we would continue to have her train and care for our dogs. She is also a very sincere and nice person! Would highly recommend her.

We brought home two Cairn Terrier pups. It had been 12 years since we had trained a puppy, and we knew we needed a refresher course. We went to a local groomer / boarding facility for help, and it was like a time share pitch. I won’t go in to details. So we found Maj on Thumbtack. I told her right away that we humans wanted to be trained; we didn’t want somebody to offer us ready-for-use puppies, pre-trained for our convenience. We needed to be refreshed on how to live with our new pups, and how to make them happy to live with us. Well. Maj is perfect. She loves dogs and she knows what she’s doing. She has worked with us to make the whole family one. Our biggest problem has been the puppies piddling on the floor, and she had many suggestions to overcome this problem. She also consulted with her mentors to help us (our pups were a hard case). We have found a solution, and we’ve made great progress. We continue to work with Maj to train our pups to listen to us and be the great family members we want them to be. We continue to work with Maj to be the best puppy owners we can be. We’re completely satisfied.

Maj is a fantastic trainer. She is kind and patient with me, which makes me much more comfortable doing the things I need to do with my dog. She is wonderful with my dog and models the behavior I need to have with him so I learn even when she’s not teaching that specific skill. My dog is much better behaved and, while he’s always been a happy dog, he’s even happier now. He is definitely calmer. Thank you Maj!

Jennifer trained my new, 9 month old puppy that I rescued from the animal shelter. He was a stray, with absolutely no clue on how to behave in a household with another pet. He was scared of other dogs, ran away constantly and jumped on people. I brought him to train for a week with Jennifer and I was extremely happy with the education he received in only one week ! He learned to sit, heel, come and behave more calmly around people and other dogs. She worked on his fearful behavior and sometimes aggressive responses. Jennifer gave us a wonderful “head start” , from which we could continue to make progress by ourselves and took care of the many frustrations we encounter, when getting a new puppy. I highly recommend her for anyone, who is considering some training for their dog. She will deliver on training and will treat each dog like it was her own. I completely trust her with my pet and will contact her again, when me and my pup will run into problems. Best regards, Juliette Hengartner & Pitou

Jennifer has many years and experience with training and it shows. My 8 lb chihuahua would defy me and run off when she saw an opportunity. Finally I threw in the towel because nothing I tried worked, obviously I needed help. I found Jennifer and she has been a blessing. She has trained my chihuahua to 12 different commands and now she listens to me. It didn't even take long and she showed me what I was doing wrong and it was immediately different. Jennifer has turned my bad dog into a bad a** dog!!!!! Thank you Jennifer. Heather from Alameda, CA

Outstanding! Koru K9 trained us to be successful owners of a well-behaved dog. It was well worth our time and effort. When Scruffy rescued us, he was a 2 year-old, fearful, psycho-biter terrier who had been badly abused. It's taken 2 more years to get win his trust and love but he still went crazy around other dogs and strangers. Koru K9 taught us how to win Scruffy's focus, keep him calm and start working on obedience basics. How much was that worth to us? A lot more than we paid!

Simply put Koru K9 is awesome. I've made 3 behavior change sessions in the course of 1.5 months and puppy is way way better. She used to be a very nervous dog, afraid of everything and anything. Now she is calm, relaxed, walk beautifully by our side, doesn't bark to other dogs walking around. She still has lots to learn and training is an ongoing process, Koru K9 will teach you how to make your dog a better dog, they are great!

Mary is our full time dog walker, she comes daily to our home during the week and also does overnight stays when we go away. Our dog Beau simply loves Mary (and we do too, of course). Beau literally jumps with excitement every time Mary comes over and practically licks her to death. Mary is dependable, caring beyond belief and knows all about Beau and his personality. She keeps us well informed about anything she notices with him gives us great advice if we are dealing with any "doggie issues". We are lucky beyond measure to have her in our lives and highly recommend her for regular dog walking or pet sitting.

A few months ago I started looking for a dog walker due to a change in my work schedule. I did a lot of research and came to the conclusion that group walk/hikes wasn't for my dog because he is a senior with joint issues. So I wanted someone who would do solo dog walks. I looked into some apps but didn't like the idea of different people coming to my house everyday. I wanted one person who I could trust (I am giving them the key to my home after all). I started interviewing people because I really wanted someone I felt comfortable with. After a few weeks of searching I found Matt. We first communicated via email and he was very prompt and professional. He came to my house to meet me and my dog Zeppelin and I immediately felt at ease with him and so did Zepp. He told me his style of dog training and I decided right there and then that he'd be the man for the job. Over the months, as my schedule fluctuates, Matt has been very accommodating. Because Zeppelin is an old crotchety old man, Matt knows when he needs to modify the walks. For example, if it's a real hot day or if Zeppelin is sick or achy. At the end of each day Matt sends me a little report on Zeppelin. (Which I love!) He sometimes sends me pictures, too. If you're looking for someone who you could trust who is reliable, thoughtful, and wonderful with animals- Matt is your guy!

Matt has been walking my dog Mama for 2 years now. Mama is a special case dog, who does not like other dogs, however as her mom I refuse to keep her in doors all day. So I spent weeks and hours finding the RIGHT dog trainer/handler for my precious baby. So that I could be at work at ease, knowing she was in safe hands, but also getting some fresh air in her day. Matt fulfilled all of my requirements. He was knowledgeable and knew exactly how to handle Mama in order to keep up with her training. I cannot tell you how much of a relief it was to find him! He is respectful, timely, and GREAT with communication. You're family member will 100% be in the right hands with Matt.

Tricia knows her dogs. I took my dog through 3 courses with her and I saw her working with all types of dogs; aggressive, timid, hyper, etc. She tailored her classes to the dogs that were in attendance, and was able to work with dogs at different levels of training simultaneously. She kept it fun, but also kept things moving. I will definitely take my next dog through her classes, and my just bring my current dog back. I've been slacking on my maintenance training.

I would highly recommend her and plan on continuing to work with her in the future.

Review for Cally Davis Last Fall we adopted a 13 month old German Shepherd from our local Animal Shelter. I have had 6 GS companions in my life but none of these were adopted. All of them have been wonderful Canine Citizens and two of them involved in various 'therapy work' with people. One reason I adopted a German Shepherd: this was my way of thanking this breed for bringing so much joy into my life. I wanted to take care of one who otherwise might not have life in this world..and share the joy of canine-human companionship with her. However, it only took a few weeks for me to realize that bringing in a young dog, whose history I did not know, was very, very different from raising and training a puppy 7 - 9 weeks old!! From both her scars and her behavior, I realized she had been so abused & unsocialized that my main priority was to offer her unconditional love and the certainty of a Home here for her. After three months, I realized that unconditional love is not enough - Coco needed guidance to help her rethink her responses, collaborate with the humans caring for her, and make her needs known without being destructive of household objects. She needed specific help to overcome her intense anxiety and fear of people..and occasionally of other dogs. Being a young German Shepherd she also needed lots of good exercise. Unfortunately, she came into our lives at a time when our own usual rhythms were radically interrupted. My husband was in the hospital and rehab for four months....this occurred six months after she came into our family. All the previous work I had done with her starting rapidly slipping away as she wondered if she was being abandoned and she began her frequent attempts to hide under our house. It was about the time my husband returned home that I met Cally Davis....she was recommended to me by one of my Vet's Techs who also told me that there would be times when Cally would want to have her own dog (Amber) along in both the teaching and exercising sessions with Coco. I started not to call Cally because I did not want Coco to have to compete, with another dog, Amber, for Cally's attention....and what a mistake that would have been!! The combination of Cally and Amber as Coco's Teachers is just superb. Not only has Cally introduced and taught leash etiquette, good social skills, and how Coco can moderate her own excitable behaviors; the combination of Cally and Amber have allowed Coco experiences with another dog-as-teacher that are invaluable. I no longer worry about taking Coco to dog parks or in spaces where we might encounter other dogs, children playing, and great commotion as one can experience in the County Parks here in Santa Cruz. Under Cally's tutelage, I actually look forward to training sessions that involve real challenges for Coco in learning to trust other humans and dogs; learning not to be fearful when some new 'event' happens in her life. She's a smart dog and, through Cally's work with her, she has learned to use her intelligence in ways that benefit her and make her experience in the world a joyful one. In essence, through Cally's work....and my own follow-through with this work: now Coco walks easily on leash, responds quickly to my requests of her, and has a comfort level in the world that I worried she would never gain in any place other than within our home. I can take her...and I do...everywhere I go and know she will be fine; and others will enjoy her company! She is more than fine!: Coco receives many positive comments about her 'way of being,' rarely do we go anywhere that some stranger doesn't make the observation equivalent to: "What a smart, wonderful dog.." It is quite clear to me that the profound changes in her are due in large part to her work with Cally - as well as with Cally and Amber! I especially recommend Cally for those people who have adopted dogs and are unsure of how to read their dog's behaviors or how to assist their dog in making changes that are necessary if this adoption is to prosper both the Canine and the Humans in the 'Family Constellation.'

My husband and I have been using Citizen Hound as dog walkers and dog sitters for the past year. As new puppy parents, we have found David and his crew at Citizen Hound to be not only reliable, compassionate and affordable dog walkers, but an endless source of education as well. David encouraged us to call every night to check in on how our puppy Penny was doing the first two weeks with the group and gave us detailed updates on her behavior that day. When Penny started going through her adolescent phase and not listening as well, he was quick to catch her bad habits and work with us on her training. We know Penny loves the Citizen Hound team as well because of the way she runs to the door when they come to get her and the happy, tired puppy we see at the end of the day. The team frequently updates the group's Facebook page with pictures and videos, which we love. More often than once David and his team has helped us in a pinch with dog sitting as well. We would highly recommend David and his team - they are so much for more than dog walkers, they are trainers, teachers and above all - a dog's best friend.
