David was great. He took care of a few projects quickly and then helped troubleshoot a very tricky issue with our gas fireplace. We’d strongly recommend David.

He solved the problem and was courteous and professional. Arrived a little outside of the agreed upon window (8-10am and he arrived at 10:10). Pretty costly for a simple heating element replacement but they advised me as such before and I decided to do it anyway bc they were available asap.

Ricardo has been great! First he installed our gas dryer. Arrived on time, finished his works quickly and handed over the receipt of materials he picked up at Home Depot. The following week he built a platform in our garage and finished the job quicker than expected. Again clearly detailing his material purchases. Highly recommended!

I had an issue with a nasty rodent smell in our heating system. Shlomi did an expert job of cleaning the our furnace and all of the vents and duct work. His work was very efficient and thorough. I had never done a cleaning like that on my furnace or vents, but when I saw what was getting cleaned out it made me grateful I found this company. Easy to work with, on time and friendly.

Bajji arrived promptly and diagnosed the problem correctly. My external AC unit was blowing air but was not cooling the air. He said a fuse was broken and had to be replaced. The materials cost $80 and he mentioned that labor would cost around $150. Yet, when the final bill came it was for a total of $300. He said he took some effort to find the fuse by going to a few stores. In the end, I didnt want to argue and just paid him. I feel $300 is bit pricey for fixing the fuse.

This is the first time in my life that I have taken the time to write a review on any contractor I have hired. That's because, although most have been pretty good, I have not found any to be so extraordinary that I have been motivated to take more time from my schedule to review their work. Until Kevin! I am so gratified that the information on his company, Eastbay Heating and Air, was provided to me in response to my request. I had a heating problem associated with my "top of the line" Carrier Infinity furnace and had been told by another contractor that "in all his years of experience", he had never seen this problem. He then went on to advise me the furnace would need to be replaced at a cost of $6,000 (which he later reduced to $4800 because we are repeat customers). I spoke with Kevin on the telephone that evening and he essentially recognized and diagnosed the problem based upon my recitation of what I was told and observed. He came to our home the next morning at 7:00 am and by 7:45 am, we had heat again!!!! Although he had other customers he needed to get to on time (having fit me in--- and during commute hours, no less), he took the time to educate me on our system, explained how the unique zones behave, the significance of the sounds emanating from the ducts that we had been wondering about, and the maintenance requirements. The bill for all of this? $189.00!!!! Need I say more?

I recently bought a house with a central heating and air conditioning system. I was frustrated to find that the system did not work efficiently over the summer. I was then more frustrated to find that it barely worked at all this winter. I called Healthy duct cleaning because they had great reviews on another website as well.. They did a very thorough inspection and made multiple recommendations. I ended up having them clean out, sanitize, and rat proof my attic. They were very easy to work with, they were punctual, and they did an amazing job. They even did a good job cleaning up after themselves. I was very impressed. two months later I had them back out to replace all the ducting. The technician was a pleasure to work with. At every step of the way I have been provided with a detailed estimate of the recommended work. They have always itemized these estimates and helped me prioritize which jobs should be done first. They've been very accommodating with payments and with scheduling. I couldn't be happier!

Max is an experienced heating/plumbing professional. He readily determined the best option to replace my 34 year-old furnace. We agreed on the appropriate replacement unit and related details and the installation took place on March 6. Everything went according to plan. The new unit is working great. I recommend Max to help you if you are looking for a hard-working, experienced heating/plumbing professional that can get the job done in a reasonable amount of time, for a reasonable price,

I was in the market for a new heating and air conditioning system. I had four companies come out, and these guys blew the competition out of the water. It was funny, I thought I wanted a more expensive system, and the gentleman who came out actually talked me out of spending more money because the return on my investment was not there. Who else does that? They say that like to treat everyone like family, and that is how I felt. The experience was a lot of fun too. The original phone call, service man, and Installers were absolutely great. I'd give them one hundred stars if I could.

Carlos and his team did a great job and on short notice. They completely replaced all heating and air ducting in the entire home (1800 square feet). He was very professional and gave us lots of good information on heating and cooling that was outside of the work he was doing. He and is crew finished all the work one day and removed all old materials. Not only did I feel he was the most professional and knowledgeable, but his price was the best out of 4 bid we received, can't beat that. Great job Carlos!

JR and his team were FANTASTIC! We had a fully occluded dryer vent that we thought just needed cleaning - as it turns out, it had been poorly installed and completely busted! JR found a great solution to re-route the vent, and it looks great! We also had his team add in a heating system vent cleaning-- they were so thorough with our very dirty ducts!! Work was done with high quality and for a great price! Highly recommend this company!!

Denny is a consummate professional. What he quotes/proposes is exactly what you get. His work is top quality and he communicates well. I just got a vent fan installed in the kitchen where the duct had to be run to the outside. I also got another heating/cooling vent installed in the bedroom. He did both jobs perfectly and left the house just as clean as it was. He does all this at a great price. Highly recommend Denny

Superb! After looking around and getting multiple estimates we finally found the perfect company for the job. Ricardo, the owner of Bayhill Heat and Air is a very honest guys, he runs a very professional and well rounded company. What he promised is what he delivered. He ensures the work is done to exceed the customer's expectations and especially his own (which is way beyond what I was expecting). The crew came, worked nonstop to deliver the system on time and everything looked unbelievably good. They didn't cut any corners to make it perfect. Thanks Ricardo (and team) , your company is the best HVAC company in town, hands down.

Our 35+ year old furnace bit the dust & decided to bid out for a furnace plus AC. After multiple bids, we decided to go with Freedom Heating & AC. We liked the way Jared explained the old HVAC system & comparing it to the benefits of a new system. We were able to schedule the job quickly & planned for a two day install. One day for DEMO & one day for install. So glad went went with Freedom, Jared, Jeff & Brad were really nice guys who take pride in their craft. We have a young child so they tried to keep noise to a minimum. We’re glad we went with AC unit too because it keeps the house nice and cool during this summer heat. Our new thermostat is nice and high tech & the filtration system really cleans out the air well. For a job well done, we received great price & high quality install & a really nice furnace & AC system. Freedom heating and AC are highly recommend by our family. Thank you!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.
