Joyce was very thorough and considerate. She has a good understanding of pet care and was very responsive while we were traveling. Our cat seemed happy when we returned, which isn't always the case when we've used other sitters in the past. Thanks Joyce!

Tiffany was very professional and quick to answer my request. She addressed every need that my cat had and also did it in a very personable way, keeping me updated about how things were going, which is very important to me to have peace of mind when out of town knowing that someone new is taking care of your pet. Thanks so much Tiffany!

Marina is AMAZING! She's been walking and taking care of our dog for the past year, and he just loves her. He's a big dog and little out of control sometimes, but she is always on top of him and handling him perfectly. It's SO nice to know that he is with someone who loves him, when we aren't there! THANK YOU, Marina - from us!!!

I can't say enough positive things about Keith and the pack at YCC! I needed last-minute pet care for my dog after an unexpected surgery. Keith and the pack stepped right in, and provided service that was above and beyond my expectations. I have YCC on speed-dial for any future pet service!

John is very knowledgeable about the psychology of dogs and he came to our house to show us how to deal with the specific problems we were having at home. Taking our dog out to another trainer was not addressing our specific behavior problems at home. John is very nice and caring of our dog and we have been very happy with his dog training. He has given us the tools that we need to work on our dogs behavior and let our dog be an active member of our family.

Roddy was great. Super fast response, really proactive and took care of event details that we didn't even know needed to be taken care of. It was great watching my mom enjoy the party- vs running around taking care of the details. Would definitely recommend Roddy for your party or event.

Erika takes excellent care of my cats. She always sends pictures or videos and status updates when she is watching them. They seem happier and calmer when I get home than they have when I used other cat sitters. She follows care instructions well, is very easy to schedule with and her rates are competitive. She's clearly an animal lover!

We recently had the pleasure of contracting with Your Best Friend Pet Services to care for our dog and cat while we visited family in Southern California. The owner, Holly Pardel, was professional and friendly throughout. She scheduled a time at our convenience to come to our house to meet with us and our pets, Roxie and Roscoe. She allowed us to explain exactly the care needed for each animal. Her warmth and attention to detail immediately put both myself and my wife at ease and allowed us to leave for our trip confident that our "kids" were in very good hands. Holly came to our house twice a day. Her visits included feeding, administering medications to our lab, Roxie, as well as taking her for walks around the neighborhood. She sent numerous photos and videos of Roxie at play which again served to reassure us that all was well at home. She also took in the mail for us, and even fed our goldfish, Sunkist! Upon our return home after nearly a week's absence, we found our pets healthy and happy. Her rates are extremely reasonable for the services provided (much less than if we had boarded them). I can recommend without reservation Holly Pardel for all of your dog walking and pet sitting needs. Thanks again Holly!

Martha was very professional and thorough before she agreed to care for my pets. We met twice so that she and Denise could meet my entire family of 5 cats and 2 dogs. I'm sure that my pet family was happy to have someone there overnight while I was out of town. I got almost daily updates on my pets which were greatly appreciated. I feel confident that they received very good care in my absence and would highly recommend Wiggling Tails Pet Sitting Service

Christina was great in taking care of my cat, Ringo, over the holidays. She first came over and met us. He's quite a needy cat, and she confirmed she'd be able to give him the attention he needs, and was very professional, bringing over paperwork, proof of petsitting insurance, etc. Her professionalism and friendliness left me at ease leaving Ringo in her hands. The reason I was a bit nervous was because I've historically boarded him for longer trips, even though he always pukes on the way over to drop him off, and he always ends up looking like he didn't eat and he pulls his hair out, so I thought it was worth trying petsitting so he could stay in his house and not have to experience that stress. Christina sent photos or videos every day, as well as a brief e-mail summarizing how Ringo did. I appreciated the service she provided and Ringo did not seem as stressed when I got home. Christina offers a valuable service, and I'll continue to use her in the future for my petsitting needs.

Gail is amazing! She walks Tucker 4+ days a week and is always on time, friendly and reliable. She sends daily videos and takes Tucker and his friends to different parks throughout the city. Additionally she has cared for him overnight at my house. I trust her 100% and am so lucky to have her care for my puppy while I am away. Happy to have her in my life and so is Tucker.

Hands down MaryCatherine is the best caretaker of my dog I've ever had. She is an animal lover first, a nurturer by nature, a professional by experience, clean and organized by design, reliable and communicative for peace of mind and energetic for my big boxer. My male boxer is quite spoiled and requires extra attention by taking vitamins, eating a hardboiled egg with his food in the AM, drinking cold water from the refrigerator and going for long walks; MaryCatherine was very understanding and enthusastic about it. She related to the caring for my very best companion. Not to mention, her experience with large dogs. While I was away from my dog, MaryCatherine would send videos of my dog when she would visit and I was at peace knowing he was under her care. She took him on long hour walks; more than the typical 30 minutes. I was impressed with her cleanliness and respect for my space. She cleaned his bowls and the dishes she used to cut the eggs in AM with. It's her attention to the details that resonates with me. I will certainly call on MaryCatherine each time I go out-of-town or need a caretaker of my dog. I will tell my friends and neighbors about her as well. She is the best ever, thank you so much!

I rarely feel compelled to write reviews but Uncle Joe's Pet Care deserves to be noted as providing excellent service and support. Joe recently cared for our two cats while we were on vacation, and we had a great experience! He was very thorough in getting all the care details during the initial meet and greet, and instantly bonded with our furry buddies. They have a few special needs, like for example feeding always needs to be supervised because otherwise the alpha cat would eat both portions. We felt very comfortable leaving our two sweeties in Joe's care and we were not disappointed. As we could see and hear from Joe's frequent updates, they were happy and relaxed during our absence. It's also comforting to know that Uncle Joe's is insured and bonded. Joe is not only very professional, and knows a ton about pet care (ask him about nutrition!), he is also someone who truly loves cats. I'm so happy we found him, and I highly recommend Uncle Joe's Pet Care. I would give them 10 stars if I could!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a house sitter?

House-sitting can be a lifesaver when you’re leaving town for any length of time. Whether you work remotely, you’re taking a much-needed vacation, or you just want to road-trip for a few days, it’s wise to have a pro keep an eye on your house and pets while you’re gone. Your home is more likely to stay safe and you won’t have to wrangle the kitty into a kennel to travel with you. The national average pet-sitting price ranges between $20 and $30. Pet-sitting and house-sitting costs will vary based on where you live in the country and regional labor rates. Another factor in cost is how long you want the house-sitter to stay. Some people prefer to have the house-sitter stay the night at their house, perhaps to care for an elderly pet or simply to keep a watchful eye on the home at all times. Overnight stays will cost more, ranging anywhere from $50 to $100, depending on services provided. For day visits, house-sitting and pet-sitting prices will increase incrementally the longer the visit and the more service you want performed. For example, a quick 10-minute visit to feed and walk the pet and bring in the mail could be $12.50, a 25-minute visit could be $18, a 40-minute visit $25, and a 50-minute visit $32. How much should you pay for a pet sitter?

Pet sitting provides your precious pet with in-home care. A pet-sitter can make a brief visit during the day to provide snacks, playtime or affection, or stay at your house for one or more nights to tend to your pet. Prices for pet-sitting will vary based on length of the visit. Nationally, pet sitting prices range from $20 to $30, although prices run higher for your sitter to stay the night. Prices will also be affected by where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pet-sitting prices based on length of time and region:

  • 30-minute visit: $17 in a small Texas town.
  • 30-minute visit: $25 in Southern California.
    • 45-minute visit: $28.
    • 60-minute visit: $32.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $50 in Texas.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $85 in Southern California.
    • 12 hours: $100.
    • 24 hours: $200. This is a good option for a sick, elderly or brand-new pet that needs constant supervision.
