We weren't sure what to expect from a self-defense class, but Max offered me a good breakdown over email prior to the coming in to teach, and once here, he was good about demonstrating techniques and allowing the class to do as much or as little as they were comfortable with. I found Max's lessons to be practical for the common person, and his teaching style is to the point, but relaxed. He'll answer questions as you go along and help you to chain together the different things he teaches you. We've asked him back for every other week, so he's definitely doing the right things! We have a lot of fun, but also learn a lot from Max.

I first came upon Mehran about 8 years ago when looking for a karate program for my daughter. I had visited a few dojos in the area, and was concerned that the rigid, almost militaristic atmosphere would not be a good fit with my daughter’s easy-going, easily distractible nature. The first time I visited Mehran’s Okinawa Karate Academy’s kids’ workout he was immediately open and engaging, inviting my daughter to join that day’s workout. I was struck by his great rapport with the kids while also encouraging them to do the exercises with the proper technique. I liked it so much that after watching a few classes I joined the dojo also, and have been happily having him encourage me to correct my techniques ever since :-) Mehran is an extremely skilled martial artist. His many years of experience and willingness to work with people of all levels make him a great asset to those of us fortunate enough to be able to work with him. I highly recommend to everyone interested in learning karate to visit Mehran’s Okinawa Karate Academy, and join us for a workout.

Jay is not only a great martial arts instructor but more importantly to me - he helps kids understand important life lessons. He talks to his kids a lot about being responsible and holds them accountable. He is a rare find.

I've had one lesson with Cindy so far and loved it! She walked me through proper techniques and we did a variety of self-defense training so I was constantly challenged and learning. I can say that after one lesson I already feel much more prepared, but I'm looking forward to learning more and getting stronger in the process! I'd recommend Cindy to anyone who is looking for the perfect balance of self-defense lessons and working out!

A great place to work out! I have known and trained with Jeremy for over 15 years, and I am excited that he has finally decided to open up a school. I have studied martial arts for over 20 years at various schools and styles ranging from Tae Kwon Do (with Jeremy) Capoeria, Muay Thai, Judo, and Wing Chun. Of all my instructors, and I have had some great ones, I can safely attest that Jeremy was the one that allowed me to grow the most. if you are a beginner, or advanced in martial arts I guarantee that if you spend six months training under Jeremy at IMA, you will see tremendous improvement with your technique and fitness goals.

      About

We provide private martial arts and self-defense lessons and training. I am not a martial arts instructor who wants to be called master, sifu or some other honorific title; I'm just an easygoing coach with three legitimate, confirmable black belts that will work with you at whatever level you are. I won't force you to train like an Olympian unless you want to, and I don't teach how to dodge bullets or fly through the air. If this sounds like something you might be interested in, read on. I am committed to teaching critical self-protection skills to those who seek it. My form of self-defense teaches the social, emotional, mental as well as physical skills necessary to avoid most confrontations. Should an assailant escalate to the physical realm, my students are ready to respond accordingly with easy-to-master physical skills that are derived from jujitsu, hapkido, aikido, wing chun and NYC street defense that any body type can learn quickly and easily. I offer private lessons to both adults and children, as well as corporate team lessons. For those who may be interested, I am willing to help them achieve their black belt through Jujitsu America. I offer a free needs analysis/first lesson and after that, I charge for eight lessons at a time. I strongly believe that no one should be denied this education and as such, I have committed to teaching these skills to young people in the public schools free of charge; just ask. Additionally, I offer sliding scale to those who simply can't afford to pay my normal fees. I also offer coaching for competitive events. I am a first-level national coach (and a committee member) for Sport Jujitsu; I can help you succeed in any tournament. If you are interested in studying in either San Francisco or New York, or if you have any questions, please reach out to me at the number below or e-mail me. Please check out my website too. It's where you can check out my credentials and see my videos. Thanks for reading, and I hope to work with you soon.

      About

Having lived in Japan for 8 years does not make me a better instructor, in and of itself. Nor does having been a tournament champion. 35+ years doing Karate and several years doing other martial arts helps my level of understanding. Having a deeper technical knowledge than almost anyone else outside of Japan helps as well. But what really sets me apart is the passion that I have, not only for Karate-do as a way of life, but for teaching it in a way that helps students progress as quickly as they are capable of.
