This guy is the real deal. You can tell he has years of experience because of how good he is at improvising. He helped patched up a leak in the kitchen drain in just 20 mins. Made arrangements to get it done when two other plumbers flaked on us.

Jose completed top notch work for me. He was very fast with replies, was flexible on appointment hours, showed up right on time, and did great work. Plus he's super friendly! On the first visit, he did a thorough job checking out my garbage disposal to confirm its status. After that, he let me know the options about what could be done and did not do the hard sell that other plumbers might. He provided some recommendations about replacement disposals to buy and offered to return and install it for the remaining amount quoted. Very standup! We later set up a time to replace the garbage disposal and it all went off without a hitch. All through the process he explained what he was doing. After it was completed, I showed him my shower heads I was thinking about replacing and he explained how to do it on my own and some tricks. Everything was completed in the 1-hr time we discussed. All around great plumber and I'll definitely be calling on him (and his assistant) for future jobs!

Hi was friendly, helpful, fast and showed up exactly on time. Contrary to many plumbers I've dealt with, he didn't try to push me into spending lots of money. Instead, he recommended solutions that saved me money, even if that meant less profit for him.

Ray did an awesome job installing or washer and dryer hookup. He was extremely communicative, clear and knew his craft. He arrived early each day and respected or home. We felt very secure about the work he was doing and there were no surprises. What I appreciated most was that he and his staff/ partners were diligent about protecting our property, covering them with tarps, etc to ensure or home was not dirtied with the work. All 3 service providers, from the plumbers to the drywall and electricians were top notch professionals who did quality work. I highly recommend Ray and his team.

Erik is a real decent guy trying to make an honesty living...Th tole us that you have to be very careful when hiring a plumber, in that some plumbers who work for big companies are on a commission basis and need to "upsell" to make any money. So Erik started his own plumbing company. Even thought he had to come back the next day in order to finish a complication with the faucet, he stuck to his reasonable bid. I would certainly recommend him.

My newly installed water heater stopped pumping hot water on a late Saturday afternoon. I panicked as we have young children in the house and needed the problem fixed immediately. No plumber was available to come in the same day on short notice. I contacted Byron and within less than an hour he was at my house and was able to fix the problem. He was very professional and explained what the issues were. Byron saved us from disastrous weekend without hot water!

Max is AWESOME! We'd been having problems with our water heater for MONTHS, and four other plumbers had tried to fix it and failed (although of course they all still had to be paid ...) Max responded immediately to my request for quote; he came out to the house the next day, was 100% competent and businesslike, got the parts ordered, followed up on scheduling for the install, and two business days later THE PROBLEM IS FIXED -- at last! Highly recommend him. THANK YOU MAX!!!!!

I hired Gusanito to install porcelain tiles in my bathroom. He was very prompt--being the first contractor to contact me on thumbtack--and quickly responded to my text messages whenever I had a question. He takes his time and is very detailed in his work. He is also willing to help you with other problems. For example, in addition to installing the tiles, I also wanted to change my sink faucet and shower handles. He agreed to do the extra work at a reasonable price. The tile installation went smoothly, however, we ran into plumbing issues which he couldn't solve. I'm giving him four stars because I hired him on thumbtack for tile installation services, not plumbing. Nonetheless, he agreed to bring his cousin (who is an experienced plumber) over the next day to change my sink faucet at no extra cost. The total work took about two full days to complete, but I'm sure it would have been less if we didn't run into the plumbing issues. So I recommend him but make sure you talk with him thoroughly about what you want to accomplish.

Routine water heater swap - yeah right. What started out as thinking our water heater was broken, turned out to be a long overdue clogged sewer lateral. Worst case scenario. While I'm not that happy about the sewage overflow situation which could have been better mitigated (and we still need to beach the hell out of that room), the solutions and options offered by Ali were professional and spoke of his experience. To unclog the piping, snaking was attempted but failed, hydrojetting was attempted but failed (with a mess of sewage). Finally we got a camera down there to find a wall of something about 50 feet down from the mechanical room to a spot under the sidewalk. Digging 4 feet down, to find actually a pretty good condition clay lateral. Ali's man Valentino (a skilled gentleman), cut the clay and replaced it with a riser in order to install a cleanout for future maintenance. Once done, they hydrojetted for another hour to clear 7-8 months worth of waste. The camera was once again sent through to find that a portion of the clay lateral had shifted and created uneven surfaces including some penetration of tree roots. While most plumbers would probably recommending an immediate replacement, Ali recommended that since it wasn't fully collapsed, we should simply clear out the lateral as routine maintenance rather than spend all the money to replace the pipe. I appreciate his direct communication, no sales pitch, and brief coaching through the process. While I do have 10 yrs of construction experience, and his price was not the cheapest, he certainly delivered on time and without any sense of price gouging.

These guys are great but they are a big company and therefore you are going to pay big company prices. They came out the same day to help us with our plumbing issue and took care of it quickly and efficiently. Additionally, I spoke with two dispatchers and two plumbers and all of them were incredibly professional and polite. If you have an emergency and need a plumber asap, I highly recommend Mr. Rooter.

Gerardo replaced both mine and my neighbor's water heaters in our condo. We had a unique situation with the configuration and size of our units, and Gerardo was able to identify a solution for us when two previous plumbers could not complete the work. The installation was done exactly as he had scoped, and Gerardo was incredibly helpful in helping us understand our choices to replace the units. I couldn't be happier with the job, and I highly, highly recommend Gerardo if you are in need of plumbing services. Thanks again, Gerardo!

Communication was great- they responded to our request very quickly and were able to come fast. However, our drain problem was in a multi-unit condo, and possibly beyond the scope of their equipment/capabilities. They used a 20 ft snake that ultimately got stuck in our system. We had to escalate to our building management, who brought out plumbers used to commercial properties and eventually resolved over a couple weeks. Not the plumber's fault, as they were not able to know the extend of our drain issues. 5 stars for communication and effort, 3 for incomplete resolution - so 4 star average.

Stephan is extremely detailed and does what needs to be done in order for the job to be right. Stephan went beyond the role of a plumber helping us bring up the massively heavy vanity with my husband and 2 other neighbors up our stairs and through our narrow hallway. In order for the vanity to be flushed against the way, he cut through our trim. He had to take our old sink and break it open to get parts. When he was done, he caulked the back. It looked beautiful. A few days later we noticed the sink's water would drain slowly. I texted Stephan and he was back at our house a day later with new pipes and a professional grade snake. Stephan is beyond capable of even the biggest projects and is all around a nice guy you trust.

TL;DR: Valentino was excellent, and I'd hire him again in a heartbeat. I had some hesitations about hiring a plumber, after all the stories I've heard about plumbers charging exorbitant prices. For my disconnected kitchen sink pipe, a couple plumbers quoted me very high prices. When I came to Valentino, he charged me a fair price that was much less than the other two quotes. And moreover, he came on time and got the job (which actually wasn't so simple) done well. Super nice, super professional, and super honest. Hands down, I'd hire him again, and would recommend him to my friends.

I had a Kitchen drain that was clogged. David responded, we agreed on a reasonable offer and he was out the next day to complete the job. He was kind, professional and on-time (even a couple of minutes early). He put down a plastic tarp around the work area and was very clean and cleaned up after himself. I was VERY pleased with his responsiveness and work overall, I would def call him for any future repairs. He hit every mark on what one expects from a service professional and I think you'd make a good choice going with him. I have had to hire a plumber at a previous residence and it cost twice as much for a similar job. Glad I found him!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
