Thomas did a great job capturing our wedding at Wine & Roses in Lodi! Very professional and friendly person. He was never in the way or distracting like I have seen with other wedding photographers and yet he was still able to take so many amazing and memorable photos. Thank you!

Wow!!!!!! Ok...... Not even sure where I should start! Cindy, was truly amazing... When I first met Cindy, instantly I knew she would be a loving addition to "our family". When it comes to your wedding photos, you really want some with obvious talent, (which she has) and of course an eye for detail and the ability to capture emotion and real feeling... If this is what you are looking for then Cindy is your woman!!! She didn't stop!!! She took so many amazing high quality photos, that will be a memory for a lifetime.... Grateful for you cindy!!! And can't wait for future baby photos... Much love. Janel~

Sheila is not only a talented photographer but also very professional. She is very communicative and was a pleasure to work with. She was a joy to have around during the wedding day and was honestly a "fly on the wall" unlike other wedding photographers who are too "in it". The pictures she takes are beautiful and extremely well priced. I would not hesitate to work with her again. I actually look forward to it.

We had our pre wedding photoshoot done by Diane and it was a great experience. We were visiting SF for a few days and were wondering if we will be able to capture the essence of the place in the photoshoot, but Diane drove us to the most beautiful places in the city and clicked lifelong memories. We had some pictures clicked with our friends as well and they came out really well. Diane was very flexible and it was fun spending the entire day with her. She made us really comfortable and helped us all along the photoshoot. I will highly recommend her to couples for their wedding and prewedding photoshoots.

Andrea served as event photographer for my baby shower at the Orinda Country Club. She was on time, very professional and very easy to work with. She sent over a sample photo, which will serve as my picky sister's holiday card photo. Seriously this says a lot! I can't wait to see the rest of the pictures from the event but know they will be beautiful! Highly recommend working with Andrea

Choosing Jennifer as our photographer for our wedding day was the best decision we made. Great communication since our first conversation. Our wedding day was chaotic! But she was there trying to do whatever she could to help us. The photos of our wedding beat our expectations, she was able to capture all the love and happiness of our wedding, everyone who saw our pictures loved them! Thank you Jen for being awesome and capturing such amazing images of the best day of our lives!

Eric and Claire were a delight to have as our photographers. Each time we spoke with Eric, he came prepared with ideas on locations. Before the actual day, he scouted out additional locations. We liked his work which is why we picked him. But, our wedding was on Saturday and we've already seen some samples, and we love, love what we've seen so far. Eric is professional, accommodating and his passion for his work is apparent. Even our guests enjoyed his presence at the wedding. We couldn't be happier with our experience of working with him.

If you’ve been waiting for “that one review” to really prove that Oaktown Boudoir is the way to go- don’t wait anymore! Cheshire Isaacs is a true exemplar of all that a professional boudoir photographer should strive to be. He is open and receptive to his client’s ideas without losing focus. He is honest and genuine without ever being insensitive. He is incredibly professional without ever being stuffy. The Bay Area is filled with Boudoir Photographers, so I guess the best way to write a proper review is to outline what exactly my own (popular) concerns were and how Cheshire proved triumphant! 1. Will I be comfortable? As a young woman, I was a little concerned about being erotically photographed by a man. Having been through a shoot, it’s obvious that Cheshire cares- from his personally designed music playlists (made in the interest of making the experience as comfortable as possible) to his handmade cheese and cracker platters. He continually went above and beyond for my session and I admire his passion, enthusiasm, and dedication. It shows in both his beautiful work and the long-lasting relationships he has with his clients. He spoke about his wife and daughter frequently, something that showed me his appreciation and respect for women, immediately putting me at ease. 2. Can his studio fit more than one “style” of photoshoot? Cheshire’s studio is open, bright, and filled with possibilities. He can transform the space to fit, I kid you not, any personality and style. In a matter of minutes (just enough time to refill a wine glass), his studio can go from a brightly lit angelic state to a dark, sexy, and sultry one. He mentioned having custom-designed the space alongside his wife, something that told me just how invested he was in the style and overall vibe of his studio. For my images in particular, I knew that I wanted little editing and wanted the images to be as “real” as possible. Somehow Cheshire still made it look like I was a model and knew exactly how to manipulate each pose to accentuate all the good and cleverly soften all the bad (without photoshop). 3. Will I get my money’s worth? Whichever amount of time you decide to book Cheshire for, know that not a minute will be wasted. He knows how to get down to business and not waste time while simultaneously not rushing through any poses. This guy was sweating as he climbed up and down ladders, moved heavy couches and bed sets, and adjusted lights. His hard work pays off in the beauty of his finished products! His experience in the field is obvious in the way he can quickly evaluate a pose and make small nuanced changes in position to get a desired look. I am but a poor college student and Cheshire’s prices were definitely better than most photographers around. He could easily charge three times as much for his services and would still be the deal of a lifetime. 4. Will my images be published? Cheshire was very thorough and attentive when listening to what I was comfortable with. He assured me that no images would be posted without explicit approval. In the end, his work was so beautiful that I would have been fine with it being printed on billboards and bus ads- really! 5. What about makeup? Cheshire notified me in one of our first correspondences that he had a partnership with a makeup artist, Thuy, who would be on-site for a small fee. Let me tell you- Thuy is more than simply a makeup artist- she really does it all. Not only did she do an absolutely spectacular job with my makeup, but she was the ultimate hype-woman!!! She stayed for nearly the entire session for touch-ups, glamour, and enthusiastic words of support. The experience wouldn’t have been the same without her. Every person that sees the finished images says, “Wow, I wish I’d done something like this.” Don’t be that person! Don’t wait another day, don’t look for another review, don’t google “Boudoir Photographer” again. Oaktown Boudoir is that good. Doing a boudoir shoot is obviously a large lump sum of money to dedicate to something that isn’t necessarily “necessary,” but my experience with Oaktown Boudoir is something that I will truly treasure for the rest of my life and always reflect on with a smile and a deep, deep appreciation for Cheshire Isaacs! He knows how to make a client feel like a friend, and that’s something you don’t come by often.

Tri Nguyen is the absolute BEST in the business. I was deeply enamored by his work long before I was fortunate to cross paths with him. He is such a wonderful person, it is effortless to feel comfortable with him. It usually takes some warming up to connect with a new photographer to bring out such emotions for the shoot. This is definitely NOT the case with Tri. Tri has a unique talent & eye for capturing raw emotion which compliment his brilliant style perfectly. I am anxiously awaiting our 3rd shoot! Tri is the MAN!

Anastasia was our wedding photographer and she did an outstanding job! She does all tyoes of photo shoots, not just weddings and I highly recommend contacting her for any professional photography needs. First of all, she was very easy to work with. It was easy to find a date/time/place to meet with her for both the initial meeting and another one about 1 month before the wedding date. She was very thorough during these meetings. It was clear how important it is to her to do a great job the way the couple wants it for their special day. The day of the wedding she certainly delivered. We were on a budget and she was our only photographer-- she never sat down (except to eat) and took pictures constantly. When the pictures came back to us, we were thrilled. She did an awesome job. She is a full-time photographer, this is not at all a side job for her, and this shows clearly in her pictures. I posted a small selection on Facebook and everyone was impressed. My coworkers all mentioned in person how beautiful the photography was. We also met with Anastasia 2 days after the wedding for an Editorial Shoot-- new hubby and I wore our wedding outfits again and went to 2 different predetermined locations that were special to us for a half-day photo shoot. One of our locations was a fruit orchard, and the pictures from that location are stunning. New hubby and I looked very relaxed with the wedding stress behind us! As I mentioned we were on a budget (our wedding cost a little over 10,000, modest by today's standards) and we found Anastasia's prices very reasonable. She offers a la carte prices, which I didn't notice many other photographers do-- they more want to force a package on you. I hope you consider contacting Anastasia for her services!

Catherine was very friendly and accommodating. She (and her assistant) came to the south bay from San Francisco since our young family thought it was too hard to move. Her price was more than fair for the 48 edited photos we received. In fact, she would've stayed longer but our baby was fussing so much we all agreed to end early (and we still got more photos than we originally agreed on). She took great photos of our son that really capture his features...which is especially notable since he's kind of an awkward age of 3 months - too big for the true newborn photos but too small to be patient for a family photo session. We are nervous picture takers and she went out of her way to help us arrange ourselves in ways that made us less nervous. We are so grateful to capture these moments in Colin's life and we will definitely have her back as he grows!

I hired Kaitlyn to take family photos. She provided me with several options for the site of the photos and even worked with our unattentive dog. She also went out of her specialty and came to my house the following morning to take newborn photos for us. Because our photos were taken so close to Christmas, she worked quickly to have our photos edited and sent back to us in time for us to send out our Christmas cards and to have photos printed and framed for our family members. Kaitlyn was very easy and great to work with. I highly recommend her services. ~Becky N.

Fifi did a great job producing professional head shot photographs for me. She was delightful to work with, very customer focused, and extremely patient. Fifi made me comfortable during the shoot, had an excellent eye for details, worked on my pose, lighting, and background....all this in a public park with activity and people swirling about. The pictures came out great; flawless execution, which resulted in so many good shots to choose from, it caused us a delightful challenge. I think Fifi is an expert photographer, and a lovely person too, and would highly recommend her for any and all photographic needs. If this review doesn't convince you, just go look at her website and you'll be WOW'd. Thanks Fifi for a wonderful job; it was very nice working with you....cheers.

Jean-Paul was a perfect photographer for our daughter's Sweet Sixteen. I contacted him last minute through thumbtack (a week before the party) and he gave me an amazing deal that didn't compare to any other quotes I got. He responded quickly, showed up early to the event and was very kind professional and attentive throughout the event. He took many photos, and got back to me with pictures only a couple days after the party. Let me tell you- the pictures were beautiful and captured each moment perfectly. We will definitely be calling Jean-Paul again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Where is the best place to take baby pictures?

Baby pictures are among the most popular types of portrait photography, and most newborn photographers are well versed in the best places to take baby pictures in their local areas. Some newborn photographers will come to the hospital to shoot the baby within a day or two of birth, while others have set up their studios to accommodate the needs of infants. Some parents prefer to have the newborn photographer come to their home or travel to a favorite park or other outdoor location. Like any portrait photography, the best place to take baby pictures is the place you like best and that will yield the types of photos you want of your baby, whether that’s posed and carefully lit studio portraits or spontaneous, casual photos at home. Work with a local newborn photographer to find a safe, calm location with great lighting and some privacy for your family.

How much does baby photography cost?

Portrait photography provides parents with lasting images of the first whirlwind months of a newborn’s life. The cost varies based on several factors, including the length and location of the session, the number of photos provided, and the amount of editing and retouching the photographer does. The national average cost for baby photos is $150-$200. Some baby photographers charge by the number of photos provided, typically ranging from an average of $299 for 20 high-resolution edited photos, to an average of $399 for 35 photos, to $499 for all of the images taken in a single session. Props and location affect the cost, too; an elaborate studio shoot with props and professional lighting may increase the cost to $600-$700 for 20-50 photos. Adding a second location or asking the photographer to travel can add $70-$250 to the cost of the session. Photographers may also charge extra fees for providing additional photos and DVDs, scheduling weekend sessions, and shooting siblings. Expect to pay at least a $50 deposit when you book a portrait photography session.

When should you take newborn photos?

Few styles of portrait photography are as tricky as newborn photos — the unpredictable infant is always in charge! The best way to ensure a successful photo shoot is to work with a local newborn photographer within the first two weeks of the baby’s life. Some photographers even work with hospitals to offer newborn sessions within a day of the baby’s birth. But newborn photographers usually recommend scheduling a shoot during the baby’s first two weeks of life, while the baby is still sleepy and relatively cooperative, especially for posed or studio shots. During this time, babies are easier to swaddle in blankets and dress in hats or headbands, and, because they often nap or nurse, can be staged with various props or be cuddled by their parents. For casual photos, most newborn photographers recommend shooting within the first six weeks of a baby’s life. Lifestyle portrait photography is more flexible and doesn’t require the baby to cooperate with multiple poses or props.
