I am a first and foremost a creative outlet and tool for those at a loss for words, or without the inspirational means to make them shine to their true potential. I believe that words are made for sharing, the more creative competition there is, the better our written language functions. I am a natural-born proofreader - I have to grimace every time I encounter any grammatical or structural error in daily articles of print. I mind's eye simply refuses to let them go unnoticed. It can be annoying to myself and others, but very useful as well. I am a songwriter and composer, with recorded and performed music featured in director Zoran Lisinac and Metakwon Filmworks' 2013 independent film "Along the Roadside."(IMDb) I studied both German and Italian for four years each, and am a proficient translator of either into English or vice versa. I am well-travelled throughout Italy and much of Northern Europe, and excel at comparative literature studies.(show more)

Hello! If you are considering refreshing your company's website or marketing collateral, I would be very interested to meet with you to learn more about your specific needs. As an independent marketing consultant and copywriter, I am available for contract work. I typically schedule my hours after reviewing the scope of the contract work with the client. My schedule is quite flexible as I often work from home. A bit about me: I am a 2004 Harvard graduate with a degree in English and American literature; I have been living in the Bay area for the past three years. My second language is Spanish. I am bilingual in both verbal and written form, and I have lived and worked internationally. My experience is well rounded in that I have worked extensively as a marketing consultant and copywriter for technology companies such as Autonomy & Genesys, along with smaller retail businesses. I have also worked with One World Partners, an event planning and marketing organization. I have high proficiency in refreshing sales and marcom collateral, and I work closely with sales executives to improve the impact of their sales teams' presentation materials. Please message me if you'd like to see some websites that I've overseen. I generated copy and worked 1 on 1 with the client and graphic designer to produce effective written and visual messaging. I currently write content for two websites. Best regards, Breanne(show more)
Intelligent, caring, and professional proofreading, copyediting and developmental editing for your non-fiction manuscript or academic journal paper, book chapter, thesis or dissertation. Like fiction, non-fiction and academic writing have a story to tell, even if that story is a narrative, argument or theory based on research and fact. I help the author in eliciting the thread of that narrative by, for instance, shifting the order of chapters, rearranging content within a chapter, or suggesting rewrites for transitional sentences between passages. My goals as an editor are to support the author's voice, argument or thesis by clarifying structure and content in addition to managing the mechanics of editing, such as spelling, grammar, and formatting errors.(show more)

I offer professional book editing. I'm a developmental and copy editor. (I do not do proofreading. I write but I do not write grants. Though I 'grant' that you could probably use one. Who couldn't?). I also provide ghostwriting and horse shoeing. (I edit but I do NOT write your college or graduate thesis. That is so unethical, don't even get me started.) My clients tell me that I am one of the most engaging developmental book editors (fiction/nonfiction) in the industry. I am...EDITORO!(show more)

We are English tutors for those people who speak English well enough to get around, but are still having trouble with more advanced reading or idiomatic expressions. We can enjoy going through any reading, movies, songs, or other materials that might be giving trouble and clarify meanings until you are completely satisfied with your understanding. We will get into the deeper structures of the language and its history just as much or as little as you want. The point is to make you completely comfortable with your grasp of the meaning of everything you encounter in your daily life. I ask a very reasonable rate of $20/hour for private sessions. More than one person can be arranged. I am also an experienced copy editor and proofreader. After seeing the project, I can give a solid estimate for doing the job.(show more)

A division of the Walter Benjamin Research Syndicate, the San Francisco Lingua Franca School of Languages and Literature currently provides lessons in ESL English, Japanese, and German. We also provide tutoring and preparation in many advanced standardized tests, such as the Cambridge First Certificate, Cambridge Proficiency, TOEIC, TOEFL iBT/PBT, GMAT (verbal), GRE (verbal), LSAT, and Michigan Proficiency. A designer of a GMAT program at a leading ESL school in San Francisco, our director has been teaching GMAT, GRE, TOEFL and TOEIC to successful graduate- and undergraduate-entry students since 1997 and a teacher in Greece (Samos) and the U.S. (San Francisco). If you need to increase your score on the TOEFL iBT test, look no further. If you want to finally master the thorny problems of subject-verb agreement, idioms, parallelism, logical predication, pronoun-antecedent agreement, and apples-and-oranges comparisons, I can help you maneuver your way through the prickly briers of GMAT sentence correction. If you are a TOEFL iBT or PBT student, you've come to the right place. I have been an official TOEFL proctor as well. Editing is another of our specialties. Our director is a writer, a teacher, a professional copy editor and a proofreader for both law firms (Winston & Strawn - Chicago) and publishers (Nelson-Hall, City Lights, Phanes Press, and Feral House), a translator of German, French and Hebrew for many publications, and is the current director of research and editor-in-chief of the site. Our most recent public event was part of the November's "Haunted Reflections: Walter Benjamin in San Francisco" sponsored by City Lights Books, The Contemporary Jewish Museum, The Art Institute, The Mechanics' Institute and The Goethe Institute. We are currently tutoring foreign students in law school at a university in San Francisco. We also maintain a working alliance with specific ESL schools in downtown San Francisco. Our publications have appeared in English, Dutch and German in City Lights Books, Werner Pieper and der Gruene Kraft, LEFTCURVE, New German Critique, Pan (in Dutch trans.), Nettime, and numerous online sites. Our site made its official debut at the International Walter Benjamin Congress 1997 "Perception and Experience in Modernity/Wahrnehmung und Erfahrung in der Moderne" (July 24 - July 26 1997) at the University of Amsterdam (Felix Meritis Institue) in the Netherlands. In addition to publications and public events, we also have a school for foreign language (German and Japanese) and prepare students for advanced-level tests in a host of subjects. With an M.A. in German language and literature and a B.A. in humanities, Scott J. Thompson has taught philosophy (Myth to Mind: An Introduction to Presocratic Philosophy) and History (the Weimar Republic, the Rise of European Fascism) at San Francisco's New College of California, and has taught standardized tests, with over 20 years of experience in both Greece (Samos) and San Francisco at a host of ESL schools, teaching advanced levels of reading, writing, grammar, conversation. Asami Ogura-Thompson was born in Gunma, Japan, in 1987, working for Sano Nihon University. In high school for 2 years and secondary school for 3 years, she has been teaching not only English to junior high and high school students but also Japanese to exchange students and assistant language teachers (ALTs). Focusing on lessons for practical experience, she uses various common materials in the everyday environment -- food, clothing, a pen, a bottle, a box, a ball, books, newspapers, films, music, comics, Internet, e-mails, and so on. Having her major in English literature, she is a first-grade calculator on the abacus certified by the League of Japan Abacus Associations, a third-dan-jyo calligrapher certified by the All Japan Sho Federation, and a tour conductor. She is also familiar with hula, having been taught hula by Kumu Kikuchi Kurumi and Kumu Nani Lim Yap in Tokyo. An accomplished visual artist and illustrator, Ms. Ogura-Thompson just exhibited her work in Gumna Japan. Classes currently offered are as follows: 1. Business English for ESL Students (Laurel Hts./Presidio) - Open Street Map, 2900 Pine Street (Google Map and Yahoo Map) 2. Business English for ESL Students -- Business English is a class for students of English as a Second Language. Combining comprehension in reading, listening, speaking, writing and grammar, the classes focus on all aspects of the business world, including management, economics and law. In addition to a variety of texts, the lessons use articles from newspapers, magazines and journals. Audiovisual materials from up-to-date news sources also serve as valuable supplements, balancing theoretical business and economic models with 'real life' practice -- laws of supply and demand are seen in the context of mixed economies depending on advertising and played out in the actual world. Grammar from standardized tests (TOEIC, TOEFL and GMAT) make these classes ideal preparation for ESL students who are planning to enter undergraduate and graduate business colleges. I. Beginning Business English Reading Text: J.T. French, You're in Business! -- Building Better English Skills; Grammar: Barron's Business English and grammar sections from the TOEIC and TOEFL (PBT) tests. II. Intermediate Business English Reading Text: Allison and Townsend, The Business -- Upper Intermediate; P. Emmerson, Business Vocabulary Builder; Grammar: Barron's Business English and grammar applicable to the TOEFL (iBT) test. III. These 1 and 2-hour classes are held in the instructor's apartment in the Laurel Heights area of San Francisco, and they are kept small and intimate to maximize concentration -- one, two, or three students at the most. IV. TOEFL iBT: focus on speaking/writing with TOEFL official (Laurel Hts./Presidio) -- Open Street Map, Pine Street at Baker (Google Map and Yahoo Map) TOEFL iBT: focus on speaking/writing with TOEFL official Does the new TOEFL iBT make you nervous? Are you perplexed about the integrated speaking and writing sections? Don't get depressed or lose your ambition. Pick your phone and dial a TOEFL technician -- Scott J. Thompson, M.A. is the person you're looking for. When my students finally sit down to take the new TOEFL iBT, they are well-prepared. We simulate the test during our lessons. Recorded speaking practice will help you master the integrated speaking section. You will be given templates of the structure, essential vocabulary words and phrases to internalize. The focus will be placed on key transition words, as well as on suggested grammatical formula to use on particular questions. Timed writing at the computer after the reading and listening passages will help you master the integrated writing. The instructor can also spontaneously write an essay for you to study and internalize. Jump-start your grasp of the English structure, usage and idiomatic expressions, expand your vocabulary, learn what to look for in the reading passages, and enhance your listening abilities with a qualified professional. What do you love about your job?
I just love working with words and ideas. I love helping other people take the ideas or feelings inside of them and help form these elements into words that express such feelings and ideas. It is very satisfying. I think everyone has ideas and feelings inside that they want others to know. I can help with that.
Who inspired you to start your own business?
I have a compulsion to write. One day, I was teaching an English class while using a poem. I asked the students to use that poem as a structure for their own poem. I did the assignment, too. I realized at that moment that I wanted to write as much as I wanted to teach, so I've done both for all these years. I also need a lot of independence and freedom to work when I want to. I work best at night. All these things combined served as my motivation to start my own business.
