One of the first things Gleo told me was that he had a regular job and would be able to work on weekends. He did two jobs for me at a rental. One was installing a medicine cabinet and interior lock. He did not complete repair of drywall repair by the cabinet. The other job was installation of a security door. He installed the medicine cabinet, lock and security door in a good manner. He did not complete an addition to the bottom of the security door. He was pleasant, on time, cleaned up well, and cooperative but for the incomplete items. I wanted him to paint a bath in S.F. at another rental but, he did not give me an estimate (perhaps too far away). Manelis Properties

I hired Jasper from My Apartment Is Better Than Yours. I think they did a terrific job at a very reasonable price. I'm really pleased that I decided to go with them. I had a number of unusual carpentry tasks to complete when I moved to my new place. The windows were old and the wood was irregular and moldy, so the wood around the antique glass panels needed to be replaced. I was told those windows hadn't been opened in 40 years, but now they work perfectly and you'd never know the wood wasn't original. Also, several doorways lacked doors when I moved in, and were unusual rounded shapes cut into the stucco without doorframes. Jasper was able to make me custom doors with antique iron-wrought handles, and they look awesome. I also needed threshholds worked on, cabinets put up, new benches made for my roof deck, a custom projector and screen put in, antique chandeliers installed, a lock repaired... and I'm probably forgetting one or two things. They are in the process of putting the finishing touches on my humidor (they had to build me custom legs for it), and it's going to look spectacular. Anyway, they knocked it all out of the park. They were prompt and clean and didn't cause much of a disturbance despite all the work they were doing. They'll be my go-to for anything I need done in the future. I definitely recommend them.

Alex fixed my Thermador oven and range. It’s taken 7 years and three service people to get it repaired. He did it for $250 labor and parts. It works perfectly now! He was not able to fully repair my Bosch dryer but came back three times and got it working better. I think it has more to do with my very old dryer. He refunded me labor costs in full without my even asking! I’ll work with Alex again! I highly recommend him.

He is a very qualified electrician and I felt he quoted me a fair price for the project. I think he had my best interest in mind regarding the scope of the work. He is a nice guy as well. However, I believed that I would only have to paint afterward and unfortunately I had to redo a bit of the drywall patching so that it was even and blended in with the rest of the wall. (fixing mud/compound, sanding, knockdown/texturing) I'm not sure if he rushed it, was a little inexperienced with it, or what. I had zero experience, watched a handful of youtube videos and bought some stuff at Home Depot and finished it. I would use him again for electrical work but would get a better idea of what the finished project would be next time. 5 stars for his electrical work, 3 for the drywall work, averaged to 4 stars seems fair.

Alex advised us about the cost of repair to our 11 year old dryer and what the overall condition of our dryer was. By his fair advisement we decided to repair rather than to buy a new one. His repair did solve the issue we were having. He also at no extra cost did a quick overall check on our washer which we appreciated.

I can’t say enough great things about my experience with Javier. From great communication, fantastic value and professionalism. I would hire Javier again in the blink of an eye. He was very open and honest about the work he was doing (Dishwasher repair). The work was done in a timely manner and we were given a 90 labor and parts warranty. Great piece of mind, very very pleased with Javier and his work.

My Whirlpool Duet Dryer was failing to start running -- just a "beep" and "click" when I pushed the Start button, but the drum wouldn't turn. Poking around on YouTube and Google I figured out how to get the diagnostics codes out of the display. Showed "88" code and all LED lights lit up, which means that all looked good. I contacted 6 appliance repair shops through Yelp and gave them all the same info. Tim from IRBIS responded almost immediately and he and I did some more diagnostics over the phone. We thought it could either be the Thermal Fuse or the whole circuit board. He gave me a quote for either repair, in writing, shortly thereafter, and since the other 5 repair shops were not as responsive, I made an appointment to have it repaired the next day. Ryan showed up on-time and got to work. He had to take the entire machine apart to get to the Thermal Fuse. He tested it with the multimeter and it, indeed, was bad. He replaced the part with one that was working (which we also tested) and put the whole machine back together. But when we started it up, there was a different problem. The diagnostics codes now said "6E". Ryan took it apart again and took a close look at the door switch, which appeared to be broken as well. He was able to fix it by hand and put everything back together. In the end, Ryan spent a lot of time with me and fixing the dryer. He charged me exactly what Tim had quoted. The work includes a 6-month warranty and I feel confident that these guys will make it right if anything does go wrong. Good, quality service. Thanks to Ryan and Tim for the professional work!

I called Swift appliance repair service late on a week night with an issue with my furnace and they send a technician. Technician quickly diagnosed the problem and fixed it. He did not try to upsell me anything or tell me I needed more work on my furnace than I really needed. He also showed me how to fix a few potential issues on my own versus calling him back and spending more money. Lastly, he's a pretty funny guy. Prompt, honest service will make me a repeat customer if I should ever have any HVAC issues in the future.

I was having problems with my washer. It was making loud noises and not spinning. One company had come out and wanted to charge me a large amount after looking at it for a second. I chose to look elsewhere. I was very happy with Patrick from Williams Brothers Appliance Repair. They were very reasonably priced and experienced. I highly recommend this company. Patrick was on time and very helpful in telling me how to make my washer last longer.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes refrigerators?

Typically, appliance repair technicians who offer refrigeration repair also work with washers, dryers, dishwashers and other household appliances. While there is no formal training required to be an appliance repair technician, consider certification requirements, as the technician should know how to safely work with refrigerants (the chemical that keeps your fridge cold) and substitute refrigerants such as HFCs. You should also read reviews to get a sense of the pro’s experience and reputation. The appliance repair pro will come to your home, bringing all the necessary tools for diagnosis. They may need to order parts to complete the job, but all the work will take place in your home. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does refrigerator repair cost?

Refrigerator repair generally costs a fraction of the price of a new fridge and shouldhave your appliance up and running again in no time. The problems your refrigerator is experiencing and the parts required to fix it will affect your repair costs. Where you live can affect labor rates, which will raise or lower your costs. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Diagnostic fees: $50-$100. Repair pros often have a service call fee or diagnostic fee to account for their time traveling to your location with all their tools to assess the problem. If you choose to have them repair the fridge, most pros then credit this fee toward your repair cost.
  • Parts: $20-$500. A new compressor averages $200, an icemaker $300, and computerized components such as touch screens and control boards average $300 or more.
  • Basic repairs: $180-$400, including parts. This price range can include repairing the evaporator or fan motor.

How long do fridges last?

Refrigerators can last 10 to 20 years, although the most common lifespan is about 13 years. If your fridge is acting up, consider its current age when deciding whether to invest in repairs or buy a new one. Common easy fixes include faulty thermostats, dirty coils and clogged drain lines. Thermostats and dirty coils can be generally be fixed for an average cost of $80-$100. Clogged drain lines, which usually cause leaks, can often be fixed for under $200.

More complex refrigeration repairs such as replacing a bad compressor or replenishing low refrigerant can cost more because of expensive parts and higher labor. A new compressor costs an average of $200, not including labor. If labor is an average of $75-$100 per hour, and the repair takes 3 hours, you’re looking at roughly $500. Consider the age and purchase cost of your fridge; investing $350 in a $600 fridge that is 8 years old may not be cost-effective.
