RIcardo was great - super helpful, knowledgeable and efficient. He was incredibly responsive and was willing to pitch in on additional things to help make my move out as smooth as possible. For projects he helped install some flooring, paint, move some furniture and patch some holes. Would recommend him for sure.

Carlos is the man…from inquiring about rates and services to scheduling an appointment to in person meeting this morning (3/10/17), my experience was superb! I needed 2 bedroom sets including mattresses, miscellaneous junk and more junk from my backyard hauled. The rate seemed really affordable so I sent a message to confirm rate. I got a response within minutes. The week leading up to my appointment I was in communication with Carlos to confirm details. My initial appointment was at 10am, but since a pretty much had all my stuff in my living room ready to go, I rescheduled for 8am. The team arrived at 8am, Carlos introduced himself, the team put on shoe covers to protect my carpet (wow, loved that), and got started. The job was complete and they were on their way at 8:45am. If you ever need hauling services or any other restoration work, check out Restoration 1, you won’t be disappointed!

Let me preface my comments that I do not generally give 5 stars for any services. Gerald accommodated our off hours request by working on the weekend, responded very quickly, and quoted the in within hours of examining the project area. He was on time, very professional, and stayed beyond a "normal" work day to complete the job so we could see clients first thing Monday morning. As with most remodeling/refurbishing projects, unexpected glitches and delays come up. Overall, we are extremely grateful for what Gerald did for us!!

Big wind in Fairfield took a part of the backyard fence out. I had three people come to the house for quotes and Kris (with Economy Home Repair) came in with the most reasonable bid. He also came across as more knowledgeable and professional than the other two gentleman -- so we went with him and were VERY glad that we did! Top quality material and top quality work. Knocked it out quickly and cleaned up like they were never there at all. I look forward to his working on other projects for us. Thank-you Kris and crew!

Ricky is awesome, he saved us a considerable amount of money by restoring our deck and kitchen cabinets. He listened to our needs and provided valuable suggestions without to push us into more expensive procedures. He was fast, friendly and efficient and I would gladly use him again.

I'm very satisfied with the job that ARC did on the restoration project under my house. We had a main line sewage spill that needed immediate action. I spoke with Nina and she was very supportave over the phone. She explained what I should expect when talking with Insurance, and what the restoration process would entail. Arc came out the next morning to give a quote and started work immediately. The technician Sam was efficient, thorough and professional. They had the mess cleaned up within a few hours. I would recommend using this company for any restoration project.

I cannot recommend Lemon Remodeling and Services highly enough. After working with a couple of other companies to do some additional renovations in my home, I have officially found a company I trust. I met with them to go over the restoration of my kitchen and from the first meet-up to the final walk through; they made the entire process smooth and adaptable. The teams' professionalism, attention to detail and thorough communication through the entire process brought quality work and a great representation of their company. Such a pleasure to do business with that I'm about ready for them to renovate my next room!

Aaron's work is first class. I would recommend him to anyone how prioritizes the quality of the work and being able to trust their contractor. There are no shortcuts taken with Aaron. He is a craftsman who takes pride in his work and wants to do it it the right way. Our floors have gone from disgusting to stunning, and will be that way for decades to come following his high quality restoration.

Super responsive during intense storm and active leak situation. Tackled our building's water intrusion problem on the first visit ! (This has been an issue for 2 years with multiple waterproofing contractors not able to determine root cause).

I hired Mike originally to remove a deck and slider and put in french doors and a juliette balcony. Then had him do 2 4x6' windows. The work has been great and he is easy to work with. Now looking at him doing our guest bath and then the master bath. Saw his work on other projects prior to hiring and it was quality work well done. He has been responsive with email and text progress updates and his billing is spot on the quotes no surprises. Job well done so far!

Rick did some waterproofing and put up some flashing on the roof of our house. he was very easy to work with. he gave us a very competitive estimate, and did a good job explaining all of the expenses and why things should be done a certain way. he also gave us a couple of options of different ways to do the job if we wanted to cut a couple corners to save money. In the end we chose to go with all of his recommendations, and he did a very good job. We also really appreciated that he was very flexible in working around our schedule (a couple early mornings, evenings and weekends). I think we're going to get Rick back out to the house for an estimate on restoring and painting our window trim that has endured some sun damage over the years.

I asked Carlos to quote some sewage removal and sterilization at my home, about 50 sqft, where a cleanout had backed up in the yard. Carlos responded promptly, asked for a photo so he could accurately quote the work, offered breakdown of specific components of the work and their costs. His price was competitive with other quotes received. He showed up on time, completed the work as described quickly and cleanly, including removal of sewage, topsoil, treating area with sporicidin anti-microbial solution, and replacing topsoil. He also included an enzymatic treatment at no extra charge. He was personable and knowledgable, a professional all around.

Paul is a lifesaver. He managed the restoration of our 1900 San Francisco condo after a flood. He searched all over the Bay Area for custom trim and embossed wallpapers, handled all carpentry (done to our high standards) and even did quality control with other delinquent vendors. We rent the property and live out of state, and Paul went above and beyond, communicating with us frequently and stopping when we couldn't be there to check on this. I'm eternally grateful for his help.

Justin got in touch with me right away and took the time to explain my options over the phone. He was knowledgeable and I felt like I understood the full scope of work after our conversation. He was also discreet with my tenants. The job was estimated and finished in less than a week. I would definitely recommend North Bay.

Hired Kota Construction to repair water damage to a bathroom floor I thought was coming from a leak in the toilet. Turns out the leak was from the shower from a previous shower kit install that was botched and cracked a pipe in the wall. They fixed the water damaged floor, and came back for round 2 to fix the leaking pipe in the shower wall. The damaged pipe was cut out and replaced. And, the patch job on the tile looks great. It's been difficult finding a dependable contractor in the past. The bathroom floor was replaced just a year prior from someone else who rushed through the job and didn't really identify where the leak(s) were coming from.. It could have been prevented then. Kota Construction did a great job. I will be calling them back for any other repair and/or remodel work that comes up in the future.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
