I hired Harp to fix the installation of the legs to our new air hockey table which we installed incorrectly. Not only did Harp fix what we knew we installed wrong, he found something else about the installation which was vital to its stability and fixed it too. I also had him look at a couple of other small projects and he went above and beyond my expectations for their repairs too. I have had Harp come to the house one other time for repairs and I'm scheduling another. He is extremely capable at fixing everything I've asked--be it carpentry, electrical, plumbing and even gardening.

He bid $125 to clear the drain of a light well. Came within the half hour arranged arrival window. Swept clean the roof area. Found after the water initially drained that water backed up again. Determined that there was another clog underground near the sewer connection. Since there was no cleanout at the ground level and drain pipes were corroded (I had patched holes with plumbers putty and duct tape) He replaced the pipes for another $250 plus parts. This involved cutting away some cross beams to pull the pips out. Only minor complaint I noticed the next day that was that he didn't close tight the faucet to get water for testing the drain so there was a slow drip.

I hired Oscar to take a video of the sewer line and all pipes connected. The equipment used appeared appropriate and has a sensor to check where the water is running. He ran the video from the sidewalk through the end of the pipe at around 65 feet. This showed some standing water by the foundation.

I contracted Ray about my clogged sewer problem. My toiletes kept backing up. He responded quickly, assessed my plumbing needs and generated a fair market value estimate. Turns out I had tree roots blocking my sewer line. After I did a pricing research for this type of work, I decided to use his service and I am happy to say that my toilets are working again. Thanks Ray!

Erik did a great job snaking an outside sewer line that was tricky to access. What we thought would be a30 minute job ended up taking close to 3 hours of sleuthing and trial/error until he figured it out. Most folks would have given up, frustrated but Erik stuck it out. Really impressive commitment. Came on time, cleaned up, highly-recommended.

I had a water leak issue that was coming through my downstairs ceiling. Issue was due to a backed up shower drain line. Found Vyron on Thumbtack and he contacted that evening to set a time to come by an assess the job. I also needed base Board for the downstairs as well as reinstalling tile in 4 spots from a previous radiant floor heating leak. Vyron was right on time. His quote was very reasonable so I hired him. The time Vyron arranged to begin my repairs was again, right on time. He immediately began his work with a crew. He unclogged the shower drain, removed the damaged drywall and reinstalled new drywall. Installed all the base board and reinstalled the tile. He quoted a time frame of 6-8 hours. He completed everything in 7 hours. He and his crew were very clean and organized. Vyron is professional and friendly. I highly recommend Vyron Salinas. Thanks Brett Larson

Routine water heater swap - yeah right. What started out as thinking our water heater was broken, turned out to be a long overdue clogged sewer lateral. Worst case scenario. While I'm not that happy about the sewage overflow situation which could have been better mitigated (and we still need to beach the hell out of that room), the solutions and options offered by Ali were professional and spoke of his experience. To unclog the piping, snaking was attempted but failed, hydrojetting was attempted but failed (with a mess of sewage). Finally we got a camera down there to find a wall of something about 50 feet down from the mechanical room to a spot under the sidewalk. Digging 4 feet down, to find actually a pretty good condition clay lateral. Ali's man Valentino (a skilled gentleman), cut the clay and replaced it with a riser in order to install a cleanout for future maintenance. Once done, they hydrojetted for another hour to clear 7-8 months worth of waste. The camera was once again sent through to find that a portion of the clay lateral had shifted and created uneven surfaces including some penetration of tree roots. While most plumbers would probably recommending an immediate replacement, Ali recommended that since it wasn't fully collapsed, we should simply clear out the lateral as routine maintenance rather than spend all the money to replace the pipe. I appreciate his direct communication, no sales pitch, and brief coaching through the process. While I do have 10 yrs of construction experience, and his price was not the cheapest, he certainly delivered on time and without any sense of price gouging.

Greg responded to my request quickly, and came over the next day to repair a utility room waste water leak in the very confined area of the crawl space. He went about his business, and completed the job quickly. His billing was reasonable, and he was a pleasure to deal with on this project. I would recommend him.

I work in the construction industry as a project manager. I am not sufficiently knowledgeable in piping/plumbing to perform the work myself (as I tend to create more issues than resolve them). I needed a shower valve replaced that I had managed to break at home while trying to make some repairs. Gerardo not only gave a great price, but his attention to detail, craftsmanship and experience was above my expectations. I was and am very pleased with how everything went. He was clean, very friendly and I enjoyed his company. I hope to use him on all piping/plumbing needs in the future.

Ganzo and his partner installed a Gas line for my new gas range which was about 80% of the total work. The rest 20% of the work was a water line for the Refrigerator. The 80% of the work i.e. gas line has not been tested yet as I do not have a gas range yet. I will update the review when I start using it. The rest of the work - water line seems to be working fine. Ganzo and his partner did good work, were punctual and completed the work based on the pre-decided scope of work. They were punctual, & thorough in their work & at this point the water line is working as expected. Ganzo's partner was helpful in getting my requests through to Ganzo when I wanted to make sure the work is done -"in my view" the certain way. I would definitely hire Ganzo in the future for further plumbing work if I so need it.

Jerry did a great job repairing a broken sprinkler pipe in my lawn. He contacted me soon after I posted on Thumbtack, came by and quoted the job, then showed up when he said he would to do the work. The area where the work was done was left clean and the system once again works great. I highly recommend All Season for any type of lawn care or landscaping work.

Highly recommended pro. I had an emergency sewer blockage on a Friday night and Cory immediately responded and told me what to do. He came out early the next morning and cleared my sewer blockage, and took videos that exactly identified the problem and permanent repair. So relieved as this gave me my sewer function back for the short term, and gave me a long term fix. We were able to agree on the scope of work to permanently fix the problem based on the video evidence... less than one week later my sewer break is permanently repaired and warrantied for five years. Totally happy with this pro, and will use again for any other sewer or plumbing problems. Kudos for promptness, quality of work, thank you Cory, and to Thumbtack for connecting me to this pro.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often do you clean a septic tank?

For homeowners with a septic system, it’s important to have a regular septic cleaning schedule. To protect ground and drinking water, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends residential septic cleaning every three years. Many septic system companies state that you can maintain a healthy system with regular septic cleanings every three to five years. In addition to cleaning, a septic tank inspection once a year will uncover problems and can save you thousands in cleanup and repair.

When waste goes into your septic system, it separates into three parts. The solids (sludge) drop to the bottom, wastewater floats in the middle, and a layer of scum rises to the top. Regularly scheduled cleanings prevent the sludge in your septic tank from building up and clogging your tank, leading to an overflow. Pricing for a standard septic cleaning ranges between $200 and $500, with the national average cost at $315. It’s easier, more cost-effective, and better for your home health to keep your septic tank maintained.

Who pumps septic tanks?

Septic system professionals pump septic tanks. Pros in different states will have different licensing and certification regulations. Make sure the company you hire is licensed and certified, is a legitimate business, and has the appropriate insurance. Damage to your septic system could cost thousands of dollars in cleanup and repair, so it’s best to hire a qualified professional from the start.

Using an industrial-strength vacuum hose connected to a tanker truck, the septic tank company will pump out the contents of your tank. First they break up the scum of the top layer, then mix the sludge (on the bottom) into the wastewater for removal. To get all the sludge and scum from the tank, pros may use a tool called a septage spoon that loosens stubborn waste from the sides of the tank. After the tank is hosed down and empty, it is inspected for any cracks or leaks that could lead to trouble in the future. The waste in the truck is then transported and disposed of at a waste management treatment center, a cesspool or an approved dumping site.

When should you clean a septic system?

Experts agree that you should clean your septic system every three to five years for optimal system health and safe water. You should also have it inspected every year to catch minor issues before they become major. If you think you may be overdue for a septic cleaning, here are signs that you should call a pro immediately.

  • You’re at capacity: If the bottom of the scum layer is within six inches of the bottom of the tank’s outlet or if the top of the sludge layer is within 12 inches of the outlet, your tank needs to be pumped, according to the EPA.
  • It stinks: If you can smell wastewater, call a pro right away to clean your tank, pipes and field.
  • Sewage backup: Raw sewage backing up into the pipes in your home is no fun. The pros can pump out your pipes, clean your tanks and clear any clogs, but it will be a complex and messy job.
  • Pooling water: Water collecting around your tank or drain field can be a sign you need to clean your septic system.
  • Super grass: If the grass above your septic system drain field suddenly gets vibrantly green and lush, the septic tank leak could be leaking sewage and fertilizing your lawn in unwanted ways. Call a pro to inspect it right away.

How much is it to clean a septic tank?

Nobody wants their septic tank to back up. Regular septic cleaning and pumping is important to keep your ground and drinking water protected from harmful bacteria. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends septic system cleaning every three years. The national average cost for a septic tank specialist is $315. Costs for septic cleaning may vary based on where you live, how large your septic tank is, and how long it has been since the last cleaning. If it’s been many years since you’ve had your tank cleaned, the process of breaking up and removing the solids may take longer and could cost more. Typical residential septic tanks range in size from 1,000 to 2,500 gallons. The price range for septic cleaning usually averages $200-$500, with varying by tank size. Repairs or replacement parts will also add to your cost. To keep your septic tank in good health between cleanings, only flush approved items such as toilet paper, and don’t rely on your garbage disposal for composting. Items that don’t break down easily (like lemon rinds or feminine hygiene products) can back up the septic system, leading to clogs and overflow. If you smell the unmistakable odor of sewage or can see sewage bubbling up above your drain field, call for a septic cleaning immediately.
