David came out to re-caulk our windows on Sunday afternoon after putting in the request just the day before. I'm impressed with the quick turnaround. He did a thorough job of sealing the windows and actually did more windows than we originally requested.

I needed to remove security bars on a window and that means removing eight security one-way screws. This is my first using Thumbtack and everything very well. Patrick got the job done. He texted to say he was ten minutes away. He was hardworking, patient and accommodating. He answered all of the questions I had. It was great working with him. I manage a few properties and have worked with a lot of handymen and contractors. Patrick is definitely on my call back list. Thanks Patrick! Thanks Thumbtack.

Harp and his team helped us take 2 adjacent dark closets and turn them into a single larger room that we’ll eventually transform into an office space. They removed boards that were on top of windows, knocked down the dividing wall and shelves, and patched things up so that they’re ready to paint. Same day service is no joke. I contacted Harp yesterday, we FaceTimed to show him the space, and he showed up today with his crew and completed the job in 4 hours. Couldn’t be happier to get this done so quickly. If you’ve got a project you’ve been thinking about, dive in with Harp and crew. They make it easy to take it one step at a time.

Very good job. I rarely give out 5/5 but they're 4.5/5 job for sure. Ana is super fast, responsive via message on Thumbtack even when I didn't have a phone with me. Moving recently to the city I've been looking for a regular cleaner - I have found them here! Staff came on time. Friendly. Did thorough job on organizing, folding, sweeping, scrubbing, mopping, trash, cleaning - basically left my 1300+ sq ft place ready as I leave on my 3 week vacation - stress free. They also make you check completed cleaning before they leave to ensure they're done a good job. Btw, I booked them last minute. I contacted Ana - the crew showed up at my door all in less than 4 hours. That's what I call FAST & PROMPT service!

I hired Jasper from My Apartment Is Better Than Yours. I think they did a terrific job at a very reasonable price. I'm really pleased that I decided to go with them. I had a number of unusual carpentry tasks to complete when I moved to my new place. The windows were old and the wood was irregular and moldy, so the wood around the antique glass panels needed to be replaced. I was told those windows hadn't been opened in 40 years, but now they work perfectly and you'd never know the wood wasn't original. Also, several doorways lacked doors when I moved in, and were unusual rounded shapes cut into the stucco without doorframes. Jasper was able to make me custom doors with antique iron-wrought handles, and they look awesome. I also needed threshholds worked on, cabinets put up, new benches made for my roof deck, a custom projector and screen put in, antique chandeliers installed, a lock repaired... and I'm probably forgetting one or two things. They are in the process of putting the finishing touches on my humidor (they had to build me custom legs for it), and it's going to look spectacular. Anyway, they knocked it all out of the park. They were prompt and clean and didn't cause much of a disturbance despite all the work they were doing. They'll be my go-to for anything I need done in the future. I definitely recommend them.

Melki did an awesome job on installing our doors & trim. He went above and beyond to make sure it looked good, we will definitely call him for our next door install! It can be weird having a complete stranger in your home but we felt so comfortable having him around. Melki is very friendly and honest, we highly recommend him for your next job!

I highly recommend Economy Home Repair, which recently completed a job at our 1910s house in Berkeley including replacement of some rotten siding, installation of two new windows, and painting all on the 2nd floor of the house. We could not be happier with our experience. Signing up with Kris was a no-brainer: his team has stellar reviews, his bid for the job was more than fair, and he arrived on-time for meetings and responded promptly to emails. This was extremely hard work - not the most fun job - and I was particularly impressed that Carl and his team completed the job safely after just 5 consecutive days. Given my prior experience with contractors and jobs that can extend for weeks or longer, it is unusual to get that kind of attention. All the materials were high quality, and I cannot find a single flaw in Carl's workmanship. Overall had a very positive experience, and I'm particularly happy to have found a trustworthy contractor I can turn to for future work.

Jessie and Max are awesome! I had windows framed, doors cut and installed a fireplace mantle with brick changed to a wood mantle and trim. Their craftsmanship is superb, they are honest, friendly and I will definitely hire them again for all projects. Not to mention the price was at my price point.

Rafael is very professional. I hired him for a number of projects, such as installing dishwasher, range hood, kitchen faucet, door locks, garbage disposal, outdoor light fixtures, fixing windows handle, etc. He did amazing job and quality work. For example, previous cabinet is 36in (two 18in doors). Rafael installed 24in dishwasher and made a 12in door like the original cabinet. It is really amazing. When he finished his work everyday, he always cleaned everything up. He also cares about details. I would like to recommend him to everyone, and I would like to hire him again for my future projects.

I needed someone to remove a window and put in a much wider window. Oswaldo’s price was very reasonable. He and his son arrived on time and in a few hours completed the job. I was very happy with the quality of his work that I hired him to do another job which he completed the next day. I will definitely use him again for any future projects.

Eduardo replaced one of the 15 custom windows in our front door. He was incredibly responsive, professional, and so polite. My wife commented that the framing of the window he installed looks way cleaner and better than the original ones. We look forward to using him for future projects!

Patrick was great! He spent a lot of time to do the measurement and to make sure there is no error! All the windows are installed properly and no leakage during the rain! He came back and water proofed the window frames and worked like a team with my contractor despite the language barrier! I have recommended this company to my friends and coworkers!

Johnny was great, he installed a window at our cafe replacing an old one with a new custom window. He also installed a counter underneath it. He is busy, so getting it installed quickly on our schedule was the only difficulty thing we faced. I recommend him.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
