I just rated Rebecca a Full Five Stars. I remember balking initially reflexively at the listed rate, but I gave her my old resume along with two recent incarnations by two other writers, and she crafted a fine looking resume. As I didn't get the interview (and that was a selling point), I held off reviewing her services--not for any reasons bad, but I new a different direction and resume incarnation would be upcoming, as I was exploring a short list of jobs in related but different areas. This recent time Rebecca worked with me on short notice, and, as I had some serious family members health news out of the blue I didn't provide her initially with as much information and she again got me what I needed, when I needed it. We did need to hone it one last time, and I did my part this time, bullet point changes, fine tuning a little and clarifying a couple of work experience bits, and Rebecca, in one short telephone conversation was ultra professional, receptive and in tune with the subtle changes, making the changes, sometimes coming up with the word I was searching for on the fly, sometimes finding a different, better way of getting across. Quite a pro. Oh, and she didn't charge me for this second re-slanting of her original resume she had done for me. She didn't hard sell me on a cover letter, but this time decided to add one, and cover letter and resume met with GREAT results, as my contact has told me his boss said, "Its the best resume I ever saw". I still await an interview, but that is owing to one department being currently brought under a larger department, dust settling on the big bosses fighting to steal a few employees, etc, with production critical currently. But the larger point is, I asked for and got a resume that (in my special case) cuts across three areas, and I have just yesterday had a conversation with another contact in one of these different areas, and the resume is good to go as far as putting it into other hands, other departments. Thank You, Rebecca...you blew away the competition. You get what you pay for.

Marian is one of the most ambitious, proactive and provocative writers I've ever had the pleasure to work with. While writing for DBW, she did a great job of eliciting valuable insights from industry thought leaders, identifying worthwhile new media opportunities for authors, and walking the walk when it comes to social media. Don't be fooled by her age; she's smart beyond her years.

I appreciate his attention to detail. He is informative and offers insight as to why he is making certain edits to aid in my growth and development as a writer. He provides constructive criticism when necessary while preserving my autonomy. He has been a valuable asset to my research writing. Noteworthy: Julian is not trained in scientific writing and has provided me with the most meaningful edits when compared to those who are trained in the field. The sign of a truly extraordinary editor. Highly recommend.

Cynthia is one of the best, most empowering, most nurturing coaches I have ever had the honor of working with. Her wisdom runs as deep as her compassion, and I have felt heard, understood, and supported by her from the very first moment we talked. To me, she is a sort of Creative Midwife and Human Angel, helping me to break through years of paralyzing fear and self-doubt in order to manifest one of my oldest and dearest of dreams. Again and again, she has listened to me, encouraged me, and advocated for me in a way that gives me hope, more hope than I have ever felt before. If you're ready to change your life in a real way, contact Cynthia. Particularly for writers like myself, I can't imagine a more perfect and intuitive coach.

Amy has helped with various projects, including professional communications, resumes, and bios/profiles. Each time she was able to articulate my thoughts in ways I wasn't, whether she wrote the piece or edited my writing. I will go back to her with any and all projects. She's my go-to-writer and editor.

I have had Colleen's help in editing two very different projects: a business proposal and a website, so this is almost two reviews in one. Both were done VERY well - she is a strong technical writer with an eye for professional writing. The website, which was to promote an event I created, was completely different. I wanted it to be really fun and informative. Colleen is creative with an awesome sense of humor and she was perfect for the job. She took my dull content and turned it into something that was actually fun to read. Versatile, fast and smart. I strongly recommend her for your editing or writing needs.

I have worked with Jeff for the last three years, and he is, without a doubt, one of the best people I have ever had the opportunity to work with. As his supervisor, I worked with him closely, and he consistently delivered products that were high quality. He is always open to feedback, and embodied the voice of our organization in person and via communications (digital, social, etc.). He is passionate about social justice, education, the arts, and was a champion and ally for our students. His playfulness and professionalism made him an invaluable asset to our organization.

      About

My motto: "Dry" topics don't have to be dull. My areas of expertise and interest: personal finance, small-biz management, urban planning and environmental issues. They're far from boring to cover -- I've tagged along with a Secret Service agent hunting identity theft gangs online, and got my "investing fortune" read by a palm reader/technology consultant. * I was a staff writer for Self, Money and Red Herring magazines. Now as a San Francisco-based freelancer, I write for print and Web publications including Bankrate, AdvisorMax, Edutopia, Harvard Management Update and MSNBC.com. * On the Internet side, I was editor of Quicken.com, covering finance and small-business topics for 2.5 million users. * All the knowledge I've gained has led me to regular corporate writing assignments. Recent clients include Intuit, Cisco Systems, and the University of California. I have worked as an editor for a custom publishing company, working with clients like Comcast and the Credit Union League of California to create magazines and newsletters for their customers. I also write marketing collateral and business strategies for nonprofit organizations. * I also write and edit for nonprofits, most recently The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Ashoka and the University of California.

      About

Translating, effective written communications, and interpreting involve knowing the language and understanding the context in which the message will be delivered. It is not enough to just know the language, but also the customer, his or her cultural vantage point, and his or her specific needs. My job is to tailor a solution to your communication needs and add value for you.

      About

The most important part of what I do is maintaining my client's voice and perspective. The deliverable is theirs and it should reflect that. I take great pride in the perfecting the details in a project so that there is no question that the end product is the very best version possible.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

      • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
      • Strong writing skills.
      • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
      • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
      • Expertise in your target area.
      • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

      • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
      • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
      • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
      • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.
