Stephen is such a personable guy and really experienced at his job. He helped me hang a 48” bathroom mirror, a floor length wall mirror, and a canvas art - all three projects turned out to be perfect and I could not be happier. I will definitely hire Stephen again for future projects!

I wanted to fix a broken bedroom door, and I am glad to pick David Gomes as my handyman. Seeing the number of positive reviews he has, I decided to call him on the phone to describe the problem with my door. He clarified which pieces had to be replaced, what I'd be buying at Home Depot, how much the parts would cost, and how much his labor would cost. He was very clear in his explanation, and it was obvious that he has a lot of experience in this field. After talking to him on the phone, I later asked if he'd be willing to install a bathroom door in my master room, and he gave a very fair price for both jobs. We met at Home Depot during the morning, and he quickly identified which parts I needed to buy for my 2 jobs. At my house, he skillfully installed the 2 doors I needed, ensured that they closed perfectly, seamlessly matched the old existing moulding with the new door's moulding, and I have two brand new doors now. When I asked him if there was any way he could make one of the doors quieter, he found the adhesive strips necessary for dampening the door when it was slammed. After those two jobs were done, I really liked the way my doors turned out, so I pulled out my list of home improvements while he was still around. I had him change a toilet, paint the doors he installed, fix a broken shower door handle, etc. I just asked him how much extra he would charge for each additional job I asked, and I was convinced that his rates are very good. There are a lot of people who know how to do things, but very few can perform to the detail that you would like, with the work that lasts for years to come. It's important to find the right person who knows what he's doing, and David Gomes is a plumber, electrician, and the everything-handyman whom I'll always have in my contacts for whatever problems arise with my house. I recommended him to all my friends & family who have houses, as they'll appreciate the excellent work he does for the great prices he charges. If you find someone who claims to be able to do something for much cheaper than what David Gomes is charging, you'll probably end up regretting it later.

Harp has been incredibly helpful across a variety of issues. A friend recommended him to help move a piece of furniture to a resale shop and I have since called on him to help with a variety of furniture moving and more difficult house/handyman needs (hanging a VERY heavy mirror, installing bathroom towel rods etc). I not only recommend Harp because he's helpful across a variety of issues, he's also a really great person. I've enjoyed getting to know him and would recommend him to anyone. I've already have recommended him to family and friends who also have been very satisfied with his service.

We have had several new lights lying around waiting to be installed and Arisel and his co-worker were able to come over within a few days notice and take care of our home projects. They were especially great at dealing with some of the challenges that come with updating an older home. We had new shelving and a light installed in our laundry room (required removal of the previous light and re-positioning of the wiring). Lights also installed in our hallway and outdoor patios along with installation of a new doorbell and trim to our garage exterior. Everything looks good but will require some paint touch up which we plan to diy.

Darin replaced for us 2 light fixtures, fixed a switch that did not work; he also diagnosed 2 lights that did not turn on and replaced a GFCI in the bathroom. He also replaced a faucet set in the bathroom. I would recommend Darin for his work.

Omar is a hard worker and a great resource. We had him install 2 new bathroom vanities, including faucets and plumbing. He is a true professional and knows the job inside out. He also installed a medicine cabinet, and a couple of overhead cabinets in both my bathrooms. His pricing is fair, and his workmanship is stellar. Two thumbs way up. Highly recommended.

I hired Gusanito to install porcelain tiles in my bathroom. He was very prompt--being the first contractor to contact me on thumbtack--and quickly responded to my text messages whenever I had a question. He takes his time and is very detailed in his work. He is also willing to help you with other problems. For example, in addition to installing the tiles, I also wanted to change my sink faucet and shower handles. He agreed to do the extra work at a reasonable price. The tile installation went smoothly, however, we ran into plumbing issues which he couldn't solve. I'm giving him four stars because I hired him on thumbtack for tile installation services, not plumbing. Nonetheless, he agreed to bring his cousin (who is an experienced plumber) over the next day to change my sink faucet at no extra cost. The total work took about two full days to complete, but I'm sure it would have been less if we didn't run into the plumbing issues. So I recommend him but make sure you talk with him thoroughly about what you want to accomplish.

Brian was a rock star. He came over to install a vanity and ran into a number of issues with how the vanity we bought would fit in with the existing plumbing. We had no idea what the plumbing looked like until after he had taken out the old vanity so the challenges were not apparent when he started the project. Brian helped to come up with creative solutions and was able to get the vanity installed perfectly without us having to compromise on functionality. He was also incredibly responsive, professional and great all around. We would hire him again in a heart beat for other projects around the house.

Mark was prompt in responding to my query on Thumbtack. I needed a floating shelf installed in my living room and he brought some metal nails with him as they hold the shelf better than the plastic hooks/nails the shelf came with. He also got the stuff he needed to fix one kitchen drawer. I found him a little on the expensive side but he did travel a long distance and bought the stuff needed to fix things, I guess it was justifiable. He was prompt in responding to my texts to schedule and re-schedule his visit which I liked. He knew what he was doing. I'd hire him again.

I appreciate his diligence and integrity! He installed new laundry room cabinets and worked on a minor cabinet door alignment issue until I was satisfied. Installed a new toilet, bathroom vanity light and a 16 lb. dining room flush-mount light. When I had a issue with the new toilet he corrected it immediately. He's now my go-to handyman and I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a handyman!

Stephan is extremely detailed and does what needs to be done in order for the job to be right. Stephan went beyond the role of a plumber helping us bring up the massively heavy vanity with my husband and 2 other neighbors up our stairs and through our narrow hallway. In order for the vanity to be flushed against the way, he cut through our trim. He had to take our old sink and break it open to get parts. When he was done, he caulked the back. It looked beautiful. A few days later we noticed the sink's water would drain slowly. I texted Stephan and he was back at our house a day later with new pipes and a professional grade snake. Stephan is beyond capable of even the biggest projects and is all around a nice guy you trust.

We hired Howard to wall mount a bathroom cabinet as well as a few miscellaneous items around our home. He showed up on time and well-prepared with his own tools. He was polite and respectful and made sure to ask exactly where and how we wanted the items mounted. He made quick work of the tasks and was out in a jiffy. We would definitely hire him again for any sort of handyman type work! Thanks, Howard!

David and his crew did an excellent job installing a new 72 inch bathroom vanity. They were on time for each visit and very professional doing the work. It was a very difficult install because the unit was bigger than the space it had to go in and was VERY heavy (one piece assembled unit). They figured it all out and made it work! David is very friendly and competent. He brought in support staff with specific expertise when necessary. His followup visits for sheet rock, painting and base boards were timely and expedient. David also came back quickly to support a subsequent to install issue. I will definately use David again, and I highly recommend him. Additionally, his pricing was quite reasonable and fair making the project a good value. Thanks David!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.
