"Then I googled "home organizing service" to see if I can get some help, and found Thumbtack and Madison. We hired her because she responded us quickly, proactively and her profile looks very professional.
During the first assessment session, we went through every room, she looked at problem areas, made lots of suggestions, and estimated the efforts. It was very helpful for us to learn some tips how to organize, how to decide which things to donate, how to make life simpler, and be realistic about this work.
In the day one, she completed 75% of garage, removed some clutters, opened lots of boxes and even found many missing stuffs we were looking for lately. We had many discussions about where to put things, how to organize the space, etc,. and she did a great job to make garage a new look.
For example, she suggested bike storage solutions, the cap/hat storage solutions, cleared a viable homework table for repairs, etc. and for laundry, cleared shelving and unearthed items shelved that were previously unknown, filled two carloads of donatable items for donation and tax deduction, separated out holiday decor, shoes, clothing, toys, earthquake preparedness materials, and so on. She also filled all trash cans with recyclables and trash in all categories assessed debris and clutter surrounding the home, identified materials for toxic materials pick up/recycling.
In the evening, she sent us a few emails with details and links to address some questions we asked, such as where to dump the waste, where to buy stuffs to hold the bikes on the wall, etc. She really spent lots of time to think about us and help us. I really appreciate it.
One thing I was worried is that even we can make our home well organized at once, it may not last long before it becomes unorganized again. I thought it was because we have too many stuffs and we should keep getting rid of them. Actually it is only half of the solution. She suggested us "Be sure that ONLY items like the ones in a particular spot, are placed in that spot". I think that's exactly the another half of the solution that we didn't realize. We used to mix different things together, and keep moving things around, therefore they were everywhere.
We just started this project and it will take a few more sessions, but we become a lot more confident and believe we can make it and maintain it. I think it is wise to get some help from professionals if you really want to do something but couldn't get it done by yourself after a few tries. Time and peace of mind are more precious than money.
