Shana was great! Texted every day to let us know how walks went. She had to deal with construction going on at the house and we were very grateful to have her taking the dogs out each day.

I met Chelsea through Thumbtack. She came to the house to meet our cats and chickens (and us), and I instantly like her and trusted her. She house sat for us for over a week and took care of our cats and 6 chickens. Its so nice to come home to animals that are not freaked out because you have been gone. Chelsea spent time with them and send me pictures and updates while I was gone. I highly recommend her and will for certain be hiring her again!

We got so lucky finding Jody! Jody did an amazing job taking care of our kitty and house for 5 days while we were out of state. She checked in daily per request, and sent me photos of my cat throughout our absence. I did not have to worry about my cat being lonely or getting anxious because Jody slept over and kept my cat at ease by sticking to our usual schedule and giving him lots of love. When we came home our cat was not frazzled or anxious, which was our previous experience when we'd leave for long periods of time. We joke that our cat misses Jody and look forward to hiring her again when we plan our next trip!

I have two cats who LOVE when Maria comes to visit when we go out of town. Maria calls them my "babies", and every day I'm out of town, she sends me a warm, friendly text message with a photo of them eating or looking up at her. It helps me feel connected to them! Maria has been our #1 pet sitter for a few years. She's always available every time I need to book her, even during the holidays. I make sure to give her as much notice as possible so she can plan. We arrange everything through easy text messages and I leave a check for her on the kitchen counter before I go. She keeps a key to my house and I totally trust her there. I highly recommend Maria!

Julie is amazing! She watched after our three cats for two weeks while we were in Europe. She kept them in a large room in her beautiful, clean home. She gave us daily updates with pictures and videos. One of my cats became sick the day after I dropped them off. She noticed his odd behavior immediately and took him straight to the vet. My cat ended up needing multiple tests and a small procedure performed. Julie took him to all of the vet visits and made sure he was loved and calm. She took all of the necessary precautions and me feel a lot more at ease. I will absolutely be going back to her in the future!

If I were to sum up Diane's personality in 3 words it would be kindness, reliability and integrity. Diane has been walking and house sitting for my 2 English Labs for 4 years now. They absolutely love her and she treats them as if they were her own. My husband and I travel a lot and always have peace of mind knowing Diane is at the house while we're away. Highly recommend!

I always felt at ease knowing that Anne was caring for my lil Stella! She has a very special bond with the pets she looks after and always gave Stella lots of love. Stella considered it her home away from home and was always excited to go to Anne's house! When I went on vacation I got regular updates and knew she was in good hands. I also felt so much better knowing Stella was being looked after and having other playmates around as opposed to leaving her alone at home for 9plus hours while I was at work. I highly recommend Anne's services!

Wonderful job. Took care of the cat and was very responsive. Even did me a favor and put some food away in the freezer so it wouldn't spoil.

I am detail oriented, some others are not . I will give you what you paid for, not a rush job. I would rather go over a few min into my time and get everything , not leave on time and not finish. I will respect you and your home.

About

A few years ago I helped out some friends by staying at their house to take care of 4 cats when they had an emergency. Since then they have referred me to their friends and I have enjoyed staying in their beautiful homes while caring for their sweet furry four-legged family members. I don't have kids or pets of my own so I have flexibility and housesitting keeps life interesting. I work full time as a Marketing Manager at a community bank in Oakland. I am 39 single white female born and raised in Oakland. My family and friends are all here too. I am well networked and both professionally and socially, I am engaged in the community.

About

What I do is two things at once I will clean your house and sit your animals!

About

I have a great amount of experience, as for 2 years, I helped my daughter found her support and rescue service for abandoned pets in Texas. I have a huge love & appreciation for all animals. I have two Rescued dogs of my own (1 Blue Nose Stafordshire & a Dogo Argintino) who are my husband's & my "kids" now that our 2 legged kids are grown. We have always had pets of all kinds throughout life, including, but not limited to, sled dogs in Alaska. I spent the last year & 1/4 taking care full time of an aging disabled Great Pyrenees who walked with the help of a wheel chair.until he passed on to the Rainbow Bridge a few weeks ago. 1 hr. a day I still feed & care for his little "brother" a Boston Terrier. That leaves a number of hours a day/night to love & care for your fur babies. There's nothing I enjoy more about being retired than how much time it gives me to hang out with so many precious & interesting characters.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is house sitting?

A house sitter watches your house while you are away for work or vacation, or if you have to be away for an extended period. House sitters can also provide pet-sitting services, staying in your home and caring for your pet while you are away. The house sitter can say overnight in your home while you’re gone, or stop by once a day to ensure everything is in order if your pet doesn’t need overnight supervision. Reptiles and most cats are just fine with daily visits and feeding.

House sitting provides major advantages to the homeowner. A regular presence in your house deters break-ins and theft. Home safety issues such as water leaks get noticed and dealt with right away, so you don’t come home to big problems. A house sitter can bring in your mail daily, care for your houseplants, and provide home safety and peace of mind.

How do I find a reliable house sitter?

House sitting can help keep your home safe and well cared for so you can be worry-free while you’re away for work or play. There are several steps you can take to make sure you hire a trustworthy house sitter and do your part to be a responsible host. One of the best ways to ensure a safe home is to hire a professional house sitter. Here are some key points to look for when hiring a house sitter:

  • Reviews and referrals: When searching for a house sitter, always read reviews. Previous experiences will indicate how the house sitter will care for your home while you’re away.
  • Contract: Sign a clearly written contract outlining services to be provided (e.g., mail in each day by 5 p.m.), the daily rate you are paying, and how long the services will be provided. You can also include any agreed-upon house rules in the written contract.
  • Your part: Leave important phone numbers (vet, emergency contact, etc.) and information on where to find emergency items like the circuit breaker and the fire extinguisher, and have a credit card on file with the veterinarian in case of emergencies if the house sitter is watching your pets.
