Angela is an incredibly patient and knowledgeable tutor. She works closely with the student to understand their goals for fluency and as the lessons begin to pick up momentum she skillfully identifies where individual trouble points are and how to effectively address them. She makes her lessons interactive and always brings in her cultural perspective to the lessons. I look forward to my weekly sessions with Angela.

They were a great beginner lesson. Initially the classes lacked a bit of structure but towards the end they were more planned and methodical.

I take both French and Portuguese with Ingrid and have been extremely satisfied. Her holistic approach to learning ensures that you will know how to apply the language lessons you learn in the field. I was on a time constraint to visit old friends in France and I had about 1.5 months to prepare, and Ingrid prepared me linguistically and culturally to blend in and fully enjoy my time there. Subsequently, I learned that I would be moving to Brazil for work. Thank goodness my French teacher also taught Portuguese! I leave for Brazil this week and after two months with Ingrid, I'm ready for full immersion again! If you have ever visited and lived in a country, you know full immersion is like a punch in the face for the ill-prepared (most textbook taught language students), but with Ingrid you can rest assured that you will be fully prepared for full contact language learning!

I took English lessons with Toni to improve my vocabulary and my academic English. She was also kind enough to tell me about many local resources and she taught me a lot about the American culture and way of life. Toni is very dedicated in her teaching, and she made sure I learned new idiomatic and local expressions in addition to working on my academic English skills. Towards the end of my semester at UC Berkeley she helped me proof my term papers, and provided me with excellent feedback and very helpful comments on my written English. Not only is she a great teacher, she's also a very warm and friendly person who will make you feel welcome and offer a safe teaching environment. Also, make sure you try her mint tea, it's delicious!

llaria is my Italian teacher and has been for some time. Our classes focus on reading and discussing Italian novels. Her pedagogical skills are exemplary. She is always on time, well prepared and in a good mood. She handles questions well. She quickly comes up with answers that are clear and to the point. She is also skilled at correcting our mistakes. She corrects without any sign of impatience. There is no stress during our sessions. In order to achieve a more varied learning environment she recently started to provide a more rigorous structure to her lessons by adding elements such as brief writing assignments, grammar exercises and even short multiple-choice tests. We collectively do some of these in class. The others, she corrects and returns promptly. She can be very generous in her praise of our work. I continue taking classes with her because I learn so much and her manner of teaching and relating to her students is so positive and enjoyable. I would certainly recommend her to any individual, school or university who is looking for an Italian teacher.

Scott really helps me to improve my pronunciation and my understanding of English. He works with me to fix my pronunciation mistakes. Now I’m more confident while I’m speaking, whereas before I used to be very anxious about speaking English. In addition, I enjoy meeting with Scott because we talk about various topics like travelling, movies, nature, culture, and so on. That makes English practice more enjoyable. Scott is very enthusiastic about learning languages and he has strong experience. Thanks to that, he provides great advice to progress. Together, during our lessons, we practice pronunciation, we review some grammar rules, and we practice English like in real life so he can point out mistakes.

I took many semesters of German at College of San Mateo with Dr. Raney and she was by far one of the best German professors I've ever had the privilege of knowing. She is patient, brilliant, and very creative in the way in which she teaches a foreign language. She encouraged me and gave up much of her own time to support my desire to improve my language skills. Her dedication and knowledge of German (and I assume in other languages too) is amazing.

He is attentive to students' needs, genuinely concerned about their development, and invests and unusual level of effort in producing his lessons and lectures. He has a broad range of experience to offer in all types of writing, from professional documents to academic essays. His command of the language and his extensive knowledge of its use and its history give him a particularly nuanced approach to both writing and editing.

Ms. Zepeda has been tutoring my homeschooled 4th grade son in Spanish. He is very bright but new to the language, and really needed a sharp, encouraging, supportive instructor to help him along. Raquel has been such a wonderful blessing. Warm, patient, intelligent, dependable, and professional--she's been fantastic for our child. He is learning a lot and is excited about the process, due in no small amount to her fun and savvy guidance. He really looks forward to lessons with her! I would highly recommend you see if she is a match for your family, as well.

Yuki is an excellent teacher. I hired Yuki 7 months ago for Japanese lessons and have been studying with her ever since. Not only have I learned more than I expected, I have had fun while doing so. Yuki's ability to answer questions, correct mistakes and push me just enough beyond my comfort zone, all while offering encouragement and instilling confidence, creates an engaging, productive and enjoyable learning environment. In addition to her skill in teaching the language, Yuki shares a wealth of knowledge regarding Japanese culture and current events, regularly weaving this into our lessons. Many aspects of Japanese culture are reflected in how the Japanese language is used. Yuki's ability to blend language learning with cultural insight reinforces my understanding of both and provides a practical and realistic context for my developing language skills. I find this extremely valuable, especially when compared to other language learning experiences that rely primarily on exercises that are contrived and don't reflect how native speakers actually converse. One hallmark of an excellent teacher is their ability to understand and adapt to a student's needs and learning style. Yuki does this extremely well. During our very first lesson, she specifically asked what my motivation and goals are, what experience I've had with the language (if any) and how I like to learn. This was comforting and encouraging, since clearly she wanted to teach me in a way that worked well for me, not simply based on her preferred style of teaching or a "one size fits all" approach. It took me a while to realize that she was continuing to observe and adapt to my learning style months after that first meeting. As an example, I mentioned during a lesson that I was encouraged because I could often understand much of what Yuki would say in Japanese. She responded that she had purposely been speaking at full speed, as native speakers do, because she felt that I had progressed to the point where that was just enough of a challenge to help me learn without being too difficult to be discouraging. I can't remember how we had progressed to that point, but Yuki was clearly keeping track of my progress, where I was getting comfortable and where I was still challenged, and had adapted our lessons over time to what I needed at that moment. I highly recommend Yuki as a language teacher. She cares about her students and applies all of her knowledge and teaching skill toward helping them reach their individual goals. She creates a very supportive and comfortable environment, which is invaluable when learning a language. Her ability to integrate cultural insight and current events adds a depth to her language lessons that is not easy to find and makes her lessons more relevant, practical and engaging. Perhaps most telling of all, I have learned more than I expected and I have had a lot of fun doing it.
