Arisel was a joy to work with. Great communication, professional, and flexible. He has great pride in his work. We had a wall knocked down in a second-floor suite in an office building during business hours. After I mentioned that I would warn the neighbors about the impending noise, he took it upon himself to get most of the noisy work done in about a day so it would reduce the disturbance. I was blown away by how conscientious he is. Always returned my calls, texts, and emails. I've already referred him to a coworker who needs work done at her house! If we need more work done for the office, I know who I'm calling!

I was very impressed with Keith Thompson. He was flexible and accommodating with scheduling, arrived a few minutes early, and did a very good job painting. There was some existing damage to one wall and he pointed it out to me, outlined 2 ways to repair and the pros and cons of each. I went with his suggestion and the room looks fantastic. We'll definitely use him for our painting needs in the future.

I had a large sliding door that had been stuck in the wall for more than 50 years. Matt looked at the door the day after I posted my request., recommended an approach and had it fixed and working on his next visit. I have engaged him to do a number of other items at this point. Fast, very good quality work at a reasonable price. Highly recommend.

We found Salinas home remodeling services most helpful in several ways. Services done for us included electrical wiring, plumbing installation, wall and ceiling painting with texture applications. Also, bathtub, sink and appliance installation. All work was done at high standards. Note: we also experienced generous and positive attitudes from soft spoken professionals, and received on time service. Above all, we have memories of his installation process that are most rewarding. Thank You, Mr. Vyron Salinas and his helper Pablo. Yours truly, Nicholas Adkins

I hired Mauricio to paint a single interior wall in an office building. He did a great job, and came by a day early to confirm the color choice. He was very professional and was easy to communicate with via text (we all know its the easiest way). I highly recommend Mauricio!

Remove wallpaper. The wall didn't need texture after removing wall paper and they painted. They put on 2 coates of paint. The job itself looked good. However some wall paper was left on the floor and for what they did I think the price could of been lower. Over all I am satisfied with the work they did.

Eduardo and his team have decades of vast experience. Prior to forming his own business, Eduardo was in charge of the 'A-Team' for one of the highest regarded painting companies in the East Bay. We initially met when we hired his previous employer to paint the exterior of our home/ garage. Having a newborn child, we were very concerned that the paint job was handled thoughtfully by experts trained in effectively handling the homes with lead paint. Eduardo and he crew did an excellent job. Since then (nearly 11 years later) we have reached to Eduardo for: Interior paint/repairs when putting previous home on the market, move-in interior paint job for subsequent home (nearly nine years ago and still looks great!), exterior two-story duplex for my mother-in-law, wallpaper stripping, light fixture installation, plumbing work, wall patching, dry wall replacement, dry rot repair, deck repair/restoration even toilet replacement. If Eduardo can't do it, he knows someone that can (his contact assisted my mother-in-law with an emergency busted hot water heater replacement)! He does tend to book out so it's helpful plan you job in advance if you have a rigid timeline. If you are a bit flexible he can sometimes sneak in an interior job if Mother Nature isn't cooperating for his exterior jobs. He snuck in a three-day impromptu stairwell, bathroom, hallway and laundry room job for us last week, spaces that we had neglected to freshen up prior to our move in in 2009. Couldn't be happier with the results! I have recommended him countless times over the years to friends, neighbors and family and I have only heard positive feedback about him and the high quality of his work. He is professional and trustworthy. Bonus: having Eduardo and his team work in/around our home is always a pleasure as they are friendly & respectful and my kids adore 'em!

GMBC Construction came highly recommended from my in-laws who used Eli and this company to remodel their entire home and they were thrilled with the whole process. We just finished a 400 square foot room addition and we could be happier. Everything went smoothly and professionally. My wife and I are both super busy and knew we needed someone who was going to take care of every detail and when we met Eli, we knew he was our guy. Everything from the plans and permitting, to the final inspection sailed through and was amazing. We could not be happier and we recommend Eli and GMBC to everyone!!! Thank you to everyone there for doing the impossible.

Andres performed a bathroom remodel that included removing a wall, taking out one door, installing new drywall, installing a new bathtub with all piping, installing new flooring, replacing light fixtures, retexturing the walls, painting the whole bathroom (plus building a new wall segment in place of the removed door, drywall, texturing, and painting). The work covered a large number of different trade categories. Andres did great work in every single category and finished the work very quickly. The overall quality was outstanding and we have already hired him for more projects and will do so in the future. I can only highly recommend him.

We hired Lifetime Remodeling in the summer of 2017 to do a first floor addition to our home in Millbrae. The project involved adding 400 square feet to our house, which included expanding the living room and adding a new bedroom and a new bathroom. It was wonderful working with Sam and his team at every step of the way. Their bid was very competitive compared to the many others I got, and the estimated time for completion (about four months) was much shorter than most of the other quotes. Lifetime's responsive customer service and attention to detail made our lives so much easier. Here are just a few examples of things they did to minimize our stress. When strong winds blew the construction fence over during off hours, they came out here quickly to get it back up and weigh it down with sandbags. When it came time to block off the parts of the house being demolished, they helped us move furniture and cover it carefully so that it would not get damaged or dirty during construction. When they needed to move the wiring for our internet access, they made sure to reconnect it promptly. The temporary wall they built was very sturdy and effective at blocking out dust, so we had no problem continuing to live in the house throughout the construction. Sam also closely inspected all the work and often caught adjustments to be made that I did not notice. For example, even though the interior painting looked fine to me, Sam decided that he wanted another coat. When we did point out other things that needed adjusting, such as leveling out certain fixtures, the team promptly fixed them. When I asked for a different design for our recessed lighting at the last minute, even after some of them had already been installed, Sam accommodated the request. Sam checked in with me often, so I always felt well informed about the next steps coming up and what I needed to plan for. This was awesome because I learned that it can be agonizing to pick out tiles, hardwood, hardware, etc. for a project like this, especially for someone like me doing it for the first time. It was also helpful to have Sam's recommendations for suppliers for the finishes and fixtures. We were really impressed that Lifetime finished the project pretty much right on schedule and with absolutely no cost overruns. To make this happen, most days, Lifetime had a team of two to four workers here by 8 a.m., and they worked steadily for the entire day. They also often worked on weekends. After Lifetime finished the addition to the house, we ended up also hiring them to do landscaping for our front yard and replacing our concrete driveway with paver stones. They also did a great job on this, and we are so happy with and amazed by how our house looks now. Remodeling inevitably involves many hard decisions and a lot of time, energy, and money invested by the homeowner! The last thing you need is a contractor who adds unnecessary stress, yet it seemed like everyone I talked to had horror stories about their contractors. We are so grateful that Sam and Lifetime made it a wonderful experience for us.

Mike and his team were great! We had them in our office to paint a few walls that had fallen victim to chair scrapes amongst other things. I was able to have Mike come out in less than 24 hours after chatting with him about what we needed done which was EXTREMELY APPRECIATED! His team did a great job and they were very efficient. Will definitely contact them again for future painting needs.

We used The Patch Boys to patch our stairwell after moving into our new place. We had done a number on the walls trying to maneuver our couch and other large pieces of furniture up the stairs. The service was efficient, the price was reasonable, and the patchwork is indistinguishable from the rest of the wall. I would highly recommend Patch Boys!

While I didn't end up hiring Skyblue Builders for this project because it's on hold, I did want to review my experience with them. They were very responsive and accommodating in setting up a time to view the job to estimate it. They showed up exactly on time and were very professional. Kamaljit turned around a very competitive estimate within a few hours. I'll consider them for future jobs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
