My water heater broke and decided to give thumbtack a try. Kevin responded to my request right away (off-hour at weekend). He quoted a very reasonable price (better than many other contractors from yelp/craigslist) with clear information on what to expect. He showed up on time, kindly helped pick up water heater from the store, installing the unit, test it and took away the old one. He not only got work done but with great attention to details to ensure the quality. He is also very patient, taking the time to explain each step and give advice on proper usage. Kevin is a nice and trustworthy man and I would not hesitate to use his service again!

I had an issue with a nasty rodent smell in our heating system. Shlomi did an expert job of cleaning the our furnace and all of the vents and duct work. His work was very efficient and thorough. I had never done a cleaning like that on my furnace or vents, but when I saw what was getting cleaned out it made me grateful I found this company. Easy to work with, on time and friendly.

I was in the market for a new heating and air conditioning system. I had four companies come out, and these guys blew the competition out of the water. It was funny, I thought I wanted a more expensive system, and the gentleman who came out actually talked me out of spending more money because the return on my investment was not there. Who else does that? They say that like to treat everyone like family, and that is how I felt. The experience was a lot of fun too. The original phone call, service man, and Installers were absolutely great. I'd give them one hundred stars if I could.

Called these guys for a dryer issue for my home & phone conversation was professional. I asked for a quote re: heating element for my dryer model & right away they called me back & gave me a reasonable quote. My appt was for the following day & when I got home, they were already waiting. Took 2 guys to work on the dryer & was done within an hour. Great service, very professional, & reasonable price! Would definitely recommend these guys!

I didn't actually hire Max because our project changed and I didn't need him anymore so I can't talk about work quality. However, I wanted to comment on his quoting process. I had several contractors come out to make their bids and I felt that Max did an excellent job of not only listening but actually hearing what I was asking for and providing his professional suggestions (without trying to bid up the project). He provided his estimate which was exactly what we had talked about and his pricing was lower than the competition. I would contact Max again to bid for projects in the future.

JR and his team were FANTASTIC! We had a fully occluded dryer vent that we thought just needed cleaning - as it turns out, it had been poorly installed and completely busted! JR found a great solution to re-route the vent, and it looks great! We also had his team add in a heating system vent cleaning-- they were so thorough with our very dirty ducts!! Work was done with high quality and for a great price! Highly recommend this company!!

I called element home solutions and to check my attic because my house was built in 1959 and insulation is old and wanted to get it fixed or replaced. Element came to my house and gave me estimate and they were also very professional. They explained me about the work process and the day of the job they came to my house on time and they have state of the art machines to do the job. They got it done in about 7 hours. Thank you, I recommend element heating and air

Professionally and well executed thru entire process. I got five estimates. A1 was upper middle, but my experience and value of their deliverables justified the price. I would definitely refer them to anyone. FYI my installers were Oscar and William ( very professional/respectful/meticulous), Sales - Jerry, & Brad (COO?). Christina on the phone was helpful as well. They have a good team. Summary of work done: Replaced 48 year old furnace in garage closet shared with water heater. Replaced old ducting. Installed new Trane XV80, 2 stg, 100K BTU, ducting, bubble wrap insulation. Took away all old stuff. $5500 (incl taxes, inspection...). I probably got some discount. All five bids ... lowest 2800$, Highest 7200$, middle were 5000-5500. Great job guys!

We called empire about a furnace that wasn't working and they came out to look at it the same day. They determined the furnace needed a new gas control valve and brought one out the next day, during the process of installing the gas control valve they found a wire that was overheating due to a faulty blower and arranged to have a new furnace installed on the same day. The work was very professionally done and we are very happy with our new furnace.

I Had my attic cleaned, rodent proofed and insulated. They came in very profesional people, they laid down plastic to protect my carpet and cleaned up after themselves. Showed me pictures of the work they did, so I can approve without crawling around. They installed R-38 insulation which looks amazing! They actually Did a great job, I’m very satisfied by the fact that I had other 2 companies coming for estimates and I have to say that Attic Renew 360 gave me the best price and they were very respectful of my property.

I had the pleasure of working with Ian from Mercury Heating and Air Conditioning. Our air conditioner stopped working during a really hot weekend and Ian came out to our house on a Sunday and got our unit working again. It required a lot of maintenance and Ian had all of the expertise to fix the problem. He even looked around our property and advised on how to maintain and protect our other units. Ian is extremely fair and hard working. I highly recommend him for any heating and cooling issues.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace serviced?

When your furnace isn’t regularly serviced it can operate less efficiently. This increases your energy bills and also prevents your furnace from keeping your home as warm as you like. Keep your furnace properly maintained with regular service. The national average furnace service cost is between $60 and $80. Companies may offer tuneup specials that cover all the necessary testing, tightening, measuring and cleaning to keep your equipment running at top efficiency. If you have a newer system, furnace service costs may be covered by your warranty. Outside of warranty, a basic tuneup might start at $58 and a more advanced maintenance cleaning could be over $120. Here are some signs your furnace may need service:

  • The furnace has stopped functioning entirely.
  • The temperature cannot be regulated.
  • Rooms in the home are either too hot or too cold.
  • The heated air coming from the furnace smells like gas.
  • The thermostat isn’t working.
  • Strange noises are coming from the furnace.
