Hey, Peter is a dog wizard. I was having trouble with my 2 year old golden doodle but after Peter did one session, my dog shaped up and has really improved. He taught me a routine withGrazie so that I am always training her for 10-15 min. a day. Easy and so rewarding!

Logan is great at what he does I am disabled and have a puppy that was a lot for me to handle at first. He kept knocking me down so we decided to get him some training Logan was available when I needed and he has been on time every apt. My boy has gotten better at minding we have a lot to work on still but the progress is amazing. Logan is great at showing me how to get my dog to act/behave as I want by teaching me mostly and the dog as needed he shows me what steps to take to correct things and I can follow his example of course he is better at it than me but that is why I trust his opinions and I only have great things to say about Logan and his training skills

We have been working with Courtney of Devoted Dog training on scent lessons with our Corgi. We have been extremely impressed with the lessons. They are always very structured and focused. Courtney does a great job of making sure that my dog is challenged but not frustrated during lessons. We enthusiastically recommend Devoted Dog Training!

My puppy Minnie gets excited even hearing Susan's voice on the phone, she loves her so much. It's also amazing knowing she has an exhausting afternoon and I don't have to worry about drop off or pickup. And on top of all that Susan is always willing to help - on the phone or in person - with various training issues Minnie is having. I couldn't manage Minnie without her!!

He came to Napa and did a combined dog training lesson with my sister and I. He was very good with the dogs and got her crazy 6 month old puppy to learn to lay down within minute. I will be recommending him to anyone looking for a dog trainer.

Rusty at Pawgress dog training has been an absolutely amazing trainer for our reactive cattle dog/ border collie mix. He has really given us so much information and shined light on some new techniques and strategies! We have found it so useful to have our dog practice with his dogs and we love the feedback and guidance! His PDFs have helped us to be able to practice and apply at home in between trainings as well! We can’t thank Rusty enough for the work this far! We look forward to training every week as we see our dog (and us!) make strides!

We have had such a great experience with George and Notched to an OTCH with our fear reactive dog. Our pup has gone from barking and lunging at every person on walks and barking the entire time someone was in our home to happily running up to people to get treats and calming down within 5 minutes of someone entering our home. George's detailed training plan and support made working with Kole possible by alleviating many of his fears. We took Kole to Home Depot with us the other day and he calmly walked next to us while we picked flower pots for our yard and even let someone in an ice cream shop pet him on the head. We never thought this would have been remotely possible a year ago and we certainly couldn’t have come this far without George at Notched to an OTCH. Training a dog is a lot of work and nothing happens quickly, but the help and support George gave us was invaluable and we’ve made so much more progress than we ever thought possible. We really can’t thank them enough for helping us help Kole become a calm and relaxed pup who now sees people as treat-giving friends rather than something to be afraid of. I can’t recommend Emily enough. We rescued our three-year-old dog Kiki around eight months ago from what we can only imagine was an absolutely horrific situation. Needless to say Kiki had a number of different things that she was uncomfortable with. Emily was not only incredibly empathetic, but from day one showed Kiki unconditional love and support. Over a number of months, she worked with us and Kiki at a pace that Kiki was comfortable with in order to help her overcome her fears, and learn to trust people. She was not only incredible with Kiki, but incredible with us, she’s an incredible teacher and gave us all the tools that we needed to be successful in training Kiki in between our sessions. Throughout this process and as we have gone to find dog walkers, vets, or any person that will interact with Kiki we always say we hope they’re like Emily. She is truly someone that understands dogs and what they need, as well people to work with them in order to help them train their dogs. Thank you so much for all that you do, Emily!

Emily is fantastic! She began working with our 6 month old weim only 4 weeks ago, and he is already a different dog. He has learned to be better on the leash, developing better response to commands such as sit and stay. Emily truly listens to the needs of the family and is very responsive to the individual dog needs. She is dependable, responsible and when you meet her, you can just feel her passion and dedication to puppy training. She sent us regular daily updates about our puppy's progress, including video clips. When we first started, our puppy was shy of other dogs, but after only 2 weeks, he was braver and more assertive in the dog park with other pets. Emily is a pleasure to work with and we have just signed up for another 4 weeks of training to continue building on the progress our doggies has made. She is down to earth and caring. She is also not afraid to say when something isn't working, which we truly appreciated. Our dog didn't like the halti leash, so after a couple of weeks of training, Emily came up with a different leash option and was very honest about the reasons for the change. It's refreshing to work with such a professional. Thank you, Emily, for all your dedication and hard work!

John is fantastic. Our dog is a 62 lb 1 year old male, very energetic and rambunctious. When we got him, he needed not only exercise, but also training and socialization. John provides it all! He takes our dog for 90 - 120 min hikes in Funston 3/wk. John makes sure our dog is well matched with the others in the group, so they all get along and get enough exercise and positive play. Our dog is always calm and content after his walks. John also sends up pictures so we can see how much fun (and sprinting) our dog is having. Plus we've noticed a marked improvement in our dog's recall, leash training, and how well he plays with other dog since being with John. I highly recommend John and ABC Dogs!

Kristen has gone above and beyond for me and my dog Bison. She is always careful to make sure I understand what is going on and also so accommodating to our schedule and needs. Kristen was always reassuring and with the very first training task she suggested me and bison broke out of a huge rut. Finally were on the road again and excited about our journey to service dog-land. Thanks Kristen you've been so great to work with.

Outstanding! Koru K9 trained us to be successful owners of a well-behaved dog. It was well worth our time and effort. When Scruffy rescued us, he was a 2 year-old, fearful, psycho-biter terrier who had been badly abused. It's taken 2 more years to get win his trust and love but he still went crazy around other dogs and strangers. Koru K9 taught us how to win Scruffy's focus, keep him calm and start working on obedience basics. How much was that worth to us? A lot more than we paid!

I highly recommend Barkeley K-9 University. Pat keeps an open mind and always has an idea/solution for any issues. He has knowledge of numerous methods (not all dogs are the same!) and makes training pleasurable for both owner & dog. Always punctual & professional, he works well with people and teaches you how to work efficiently with your pets. Over the years, we have trained 3 dogs with Pat and are always pleased with the outcome. Group classes have been great as well. We receive many compliments on how well behaved our dogs are. Sylvette is part of the family already! Flexible with times, sweet, funny and she loves our Chappie as much as he loves her. Her walks are always varied and interesting and our dog gets great exercise working off his 1 1/2 yr old pent-up energy. When she first got Chappie, he was a shy young man, not at ease with other dogs. Now, thanks to her loving encouragement he's opened right up and now has made lots of other two-legged and four-legged friends. He runs to her when she gets here to pick him up and returns to us as happy as ever. She gives him love as if he were her own, keeps up our training/discipline regimen and only gives him delicious healthy treats and food. She's even watched him for a week while we were out of town. We've been through larger dog walking services and we will never go back. Longue Vie Sylvette!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
