Jiri in the office quoted 2 men for $80 an hour, or 3 men for $105 an hour. I gave Jiri explicit information and asked for an estimate on what he thought the final cost would be. Jiri said because of afternoon traffic, it could cost between $250 and $300. It took 2 hours, the men worked fast, wasted no time and worked quickly and professionally. However, Jiri charged $300 for the job anyway. Not the 2 men at $80 or $160 total quote. I paid the men $240, because they were good and it was not their fault but it was Jiri in the office I had the problem with. Plus, at this point, I was then told there was a $240 minimum. First I heard of that, and it should have mentioned before and been put in writing. I have my notes, no, never mentioned that. The men told me to take it up with Jiri. I was ready to give them a big tip but by then I was frustrated and annoyed. Not my first rodeo, Jiri. I've moved before. You don't get away with that. Stick to the quote, don't give an estimate of the job that is inflated and then try to stick to that, and if there is a minimum, put that in writing on the quote. Or was it possibly just a misunderstanding? In that case, you owe me $80. I had a great experience. I was able to schedule an appointment weeks in advance, Edgar was super responsive and very affordable. The movers were 10 minutes early and got the job done quickly. They even uninstalled my curtains and blackout shades which was a huge help. Overall great experience and I would recommend them to anyone.

I was very happy. The movers were on time and got right to work. Stayed within their quote to me and charged even a little less than the initial quote. I would use them again and refer them to anyone.

I hired their moving and handyman service when my movers cancelled in a last min. Harp and his team came with 4 movers and truck. They moved my heavy antique armoire, very heavy Marbel dinning tanks top and pianos from 6th floor apt to my 3rd floor unit. They also helped in mounting Tv and shelves at new place. Highly professional and they know what are they doing.

I learned of him through a person I was buying a couch from in SF and she mentioned that she had a 'great' mover available she'd worked with for years if I needed help getting it to my place. I got the movers info and spoke with Daniel the owner. I explained to him I had some stuff in a storage in San Jose I needed him to grab, then to come to SF and grab a couch, make a third stop to grab another piece of furniture I'd bout in SF, and finally deliver everything to my 3rd floor apartment.... he gave me a ridiculously fair deal (almost the same cost if I'd have rented a Uhaul and gotten a helper for 5 hours and done all the driving an loading/unloading). Daniel was amazing! He was very easy to reach (both phone and email) as well as willing to accommodate my special requests. He gave me updates along his route at the different stops and showed up when he said he would... Best of all, him and his team had packed everything carefully (I could see the wrappings they'd put on furniture when they brought it up to my apartment), handled everything with care, and where extremely respectful of my stuff. Daniel and his crew are top class. I've already introduced him to another friend, and I will absolutely be using him again and recommending him to others.

I needed a last minute mover to bring 48 cases of flooring up to my condo (with stairs). Drew was extremely responsive and more than punctual (he came in earlier since the materials came sooner than I thought). He was able to haul everything within an hr, he worked extremely fast and hard. I definitely recommend him and will hire him again!

So happy this company was there for me when I need last minute movers to move my 2bedroom home to storage! Not only were they 15 minutes early and patiently waited (i was 20 minutes late), they moved all my things quickly and were happy to do so. All my things were packed with out me present so a lot of odd shaped items and thing I still had to decide to keep or toss. I also had two very large Work benches that they moved no problem. The best was besides being totally easy going and kind, is that they charged me a flat fee of $300 for 2 guys for 3 hours of work. No travel fee, no tax, no extra anything!! I tipped them of course as they definitely deserved it! I can’t wait for them to help me move all that stuff from storage to my new place in Walnut Creek.

My Move movers managed our move this weekend. They were experienced and helpful with boxing up even our fine art. They were efficient, friendly, and trustworthy. When we arrived in San Francisco I was doubting they could fit everything in our tight storage. But they were successful! If I need movers, I will call them without a doubt!

Sam was awesome. He was prompt, very considerate, reliable, and courteous. I hired him to help deliver two loads of furniture from same location to two different locations. Sam was super acomodating and even knew to pull someone in last minute to help. He brought blankets, tied everything down, was careful with materials. And his price was super reasonable. Would definitely recommend.

Rafael and his wife are absolutely wonderful and genuine people. Super professional, they were ready for a last minute move and spent over an hour extra to put a king bed together just to help me out. It was a real pleasure working with them. This is the best moving experience I have had and I have moved a lot. Thank you Rafael.

They moved an impossible gigantic and extremely heavy piece of furniture thru a small doorway and sharp turns in a tiny area any up L steps to my second floor den. I was told it couldn't be done before these guys came along! I really can't believe they did it. They were the nicest guys. I put in my request at the last minute too. I would highly recommend. Good price too.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
