I had let my home go way too long and as such became embarrassed about having anybody come in and clean. When I put out feelers for a housecleaner Michael was the first to respond and even after sending him photos of what my home had become he still consented to clean, all the while assuring me that it will be okay and that I'm not the only person to get myself in the situation I had fallen into. As you can see from the my bathroom and kitchen photos Michael has posted it was quite a huge job. He spent one hole day in the bathroom scrubbing and scraping the tiles cleaning the sink, tub and bowl and washing the windows and mirrors (You can see how my bathroom shines in the after photo). Than he came back for another 1/4 day to attack the kitchen ( you can see the results as well). I recommend Michael very highly for his devotion to the job, understanding of your needs and excellent quality of his work.

We were really pleased with the work Matt did. We had a handful of projects that he completed for us: -Painting and installing trim and a dowel in our laundry -Adding reinforcements, a bike hook and shelving to a storage unit -Hanging floating kitchen shelves He has a great attention to detail when it comes to things like tight seams, clean edges and making things level. He was also on time, friendly, polite and cleaned up after himself. I will note that while we did pay the amount he initially quoted us, it worked out to more than his listed rate of $50/hr, but still seemed reasonable for the job. We'd be happy to use Matt again for future projects!

I needed some paint and other hauling. I decided at the same time I would get a new kitchen faucet installed. Every aspect was flawless and pleasant. Good communication, fast response, first rate work, and a fraction of the price of others. I will use for my other handyman needs.

Gary is truly a top notch professional. He was prompt, thorough, and went above and beyond to help fix a broken kitchen faucet. He literally went to multiple supply stores to track down an obscure small replacement part, which saved me from having to purchase an entirely new fixture at much greater expense. He also discovered and fixed a leak under the sink that I wouldn't have noticed, saving me from potential future damage if the leak were undetected. I greatly appreciate Gary's work and recommend him without hesitation. Thank you!

I hired Purev Contracting after searching for many months for someone who could remodel our garage. They were the most responsive contractor out of many recommended by Thumbtack and homeadvisor. Please refer to the photos on their profile for Pleasanton garage remodel for their work done for me. Here is why they are miles ahead of the competition. 1. They are available on late evenings for any discussion. They came in few times at 8.30pm upon my request for project discussion on weekdays. 2.They never missed an appointment and were always very accommodating for lateness on my part. 3. They are extremely professional in their conduct and very attentive to my needs. Here is why their work stands out. 1. They went out of their way to get the materials from Homedepot or Lowes multiple times during the project. 2. They helped in cleaning out the Garage and making sure all items were secure and protected due to rain. 3. They gave several suggestions on how to perform the remodel in terms on positioning electric outlets, lowered ceiling vs high ceiling, storage options, etc. 4. They were patient and agreeable to the numerous times I changed my mind on ceiling option, flooring choices and changes to storage location. 5. Their work was fantastic and employ a capable group of people who do good work. 6. I was very clear on my expectation of a clean finished job and they met it with resounding success. I plan to work with them on a Kitchen remodel later this year. I highly recommend Purev Construction for any contracting needs.

We got our 3 bathrooms remodeled and we extended our kitchen and Eli was great. He came with the architect right away to do the layout of our new kitchen and they submitted them to the city and got permits within a week from when we signed. Less then 3 months later, we have 3 new bathrooms and a huge new kitchen and it is perfection. We are so happy and thankful!

Roberto is a high quality skilled professional with alot of different skills and knowledge. I needed a side panel of the house replaced due to a large hole from mice and he did this very well, plus gave me a number of options. He went the extra mile and fixed the door where the mice were coming into the kitchen and also came up with a remedy to replace the sheetrock to the wall where they were coming into the house. He was able to look at the entire problem and fix all of it. No more mice!!!! Great Job, highly recommend.

We hired Sam from life time remodeling with his crew to do a complete kitchen remodel. In the meeting Sam recommended a kitchen design that we like a lot. And it turned out to be fantastic just like I wanted. Between my job and this job he made the entire process very easy and seamless for us. I decided to have the remodel done while I was part time traveling overseas. A friend of mine told me we were crazy to have the job going when we were not there to check on it, but because they have a app that I can see all the time updates from process of the job i decided that it is fine and I went. the app they use is very easy to use it fits a construction company in Silicon Valley, that is one of the reasons why I am so impressed with this company :). Turners out, it worked out great Sam's crew did the job and moving along he sent me pictures from the job site to make sure I'm fully informed in all the details I returned to an almost-finished kitchen. The quality of the work and attention to detail was excellent. The team was conscientious about confirming the details with us before each portion of the job, making sure that each decision was agreed with me and were clearly careful in their work. Sam's crew was friendly and pleasant to have in my home with the kids. I decided the last minute to paint the entire interior house during the project, and asked Sam if he could book movers as i was overseas. Rather than hire movers Sam's crew packed up our entire house themselves, moved it to the garage, then moved it back just in time for my return!!! I thought for sure something would get broken but everything made it back upstairs in perfect condition. They even set out my son's toys for him to find when we got home which was much appreciated by a jet lagged preschooler. It was a small thing but showed the care and respect the crew has for their clients. I'm very pleased with the resolute on the paint and kitchen. I would not hesitate to use Sam or anyone from his company life time remodeling again or to recommend them to anyone :).

I loved working with Rati and would highly recommend anyone looking for an interior designer who brings creativity but designs something that fits YOU. I was initially nervous about working with a designer because a) I had my own ideas and opinions about what I wanted. Many designers blow the budget and force you into styles that don't fit your personality. Not Rati. She knew where to push and where to evolve her own creativity to fit my interests and taste. AND we stayed within budget. I now LOVE every room in my house including the backyard. Rati also did a great job working under pressure. I had a deadline to complete the project and I appreciate that Rati got most of the work done on time.

I had several estimates on renovation work needed in my newly purchased fixer up home. I needed two bathrooms renovated, a new kitchen, and new paint in the entirety of my home. Jay from Green Planet Construction struck me as extremely open and professional from our first meeting. As someone who is not very "handy," it took a bit of explaining for me to understand the details of the extent of the work that needed to be done, why some things may or may not need to be done, and all the options in the middle. Jay was very patient with me, and easily accommodated my requests, changes of mind, and was able to come up with creative solutions to some of the issues my century old house presented at each stage of the renovation. From the installation of new kitchen cabinets, a full demo and creation of a master bathroom requiring lots of tile work, installing appliances, and hoisting my new huge kitchen refrigerator through a kitchen island opening because it wouldn’t fit through the door, Green Planet was thorough and performed outstanding work. Never before have I been so impressed with a general contractor who provided true quality work for such a reasonable price, and all the while helping me make informed decisions rather than dictating the plan. I will likely have my family room remodeled in the near future, and I plan on keeping Jay at Green Planet Construction on the top of my list.

We recently finished a large home remodel project through MD Companies Construction. I will start saying that we had talked to many friends and heard terrible stories about the remodel process in general; However working with Moises and Aviv has been nothing short of amazing. Moises and Aviv provide us with a detailed budget and kept us informed about costs as we navigate through the project. Another great thing about Moises and his crew is that they make you feel like you're the only client they are working with. Of course they have other projects going on simultaneously, but they make you feel important by paying specific attention to your needs.Moises and Aviv's whole crew is respectful and always friendly to our whole family. Now that our kitchen and bathroom is complete, I will still find myself reaching out to Moises and Aviv if we have any home issues or project. They always responsive and never leaves us hanging. Honestly, you can't go wrong hiring MD Companies Construction... book them early they are in demand due to their excellent customer service and hard work.

David is a caring and enthusiastic man and a delight to work with. He is very efficient and gets the job done quickly. I am grateful to him because, although I am an interior designer and certified color consultant, I do not have expertise in drawing to scale sketches of the spaces I'm hired to design. David helped me by doing those sketches and my clients were impressed. I gave him 4 stars only because some of the sketches needed to be redone because of miscommunication between us. I must admit though that I may have not been thoroughly clear re. measurements. David was always eager to do the best job possible, and I appreciated that immensely. Thank you David. Would hire again.

Jaun and his crew did a great job on my house in Pittsburg California. He refinished hardwood floors in two rooms living room and a bedroom. Installed cabinets and granite in the kitchen in all the appliances in the sinks. Including microwave dishwasher. He helped on the landscaping Front and backyard. He and I worked well together and I highly recommend him for anything you have to do.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
