The 2 people that came to cook were very nice and did a good job with the food. It was unfortunate that the order they recieved was missing the chips and the beverage that they were supposed to include.(the company did let us deduct a small amount to cover it and we had to run buy it ourselves.) They cooks were also told the incorrect time to come, luckily they were early and not late, (because being late would have been a problem, but early just meant that they were there before they needed to be early was much better than late. the food was good and in the end we enjoyed everything. I just suggest that you double check with the on what was ordered and your plans on line and on the phone before hand. (I did speak with them the day before and I did have it written in an email--so I am not sure how it was goofed up) All that said, it was a successful party and the food was plentiful and tasty .

I organized a trip for 25 people to stay at a villa in Tuscany, Italy this summer for 8 days and was fortunate to have Lilian as our house Chef. She did a fabulous job on every detail including meal planning, shopping the Italian markets, kitchen prep work, cooking and presentation. The villa had a commercial kitchen which she handled expertly and created delicious meals for the group. She even came in under budget! I would highly recommend Busy Bee and plan to use her for my next event.

We have had personal chefs in the past and all were good experiences, but Shawna was a cut above. The experience that she provided was exemplary in every facet. Shawna was personable, prepared, and her food was exquisite. She will be called upon in the future to cater any event we may have. We give her our highest recommendation.

Simply amazing! We're host quite a few events, these folks are so easy to work with and our guests raved about the food- and...there was LOTS of food. They arrived early, set up and began working - the aroma was wonderful! At the end, we had to tell them it was OK to leave----they didn't want cook and leave. They made sure everyone was full. They neatly put all of the left over food in my kitchen. We were so impressed and so glad we found them....they were a true pleasure to work with. Thank you so much!

Stacy is an Extaordinary Chef! She made an excellent Stationary Buffet, Passed Heavy Hors D'Oeuvres and a Dessert Station for my residential party. All of my guests were raving about how delicious her cooking from scratch was. She is so creative and has an impressive list of appetizers to chose from. Stacy was so classy and professional and she kept everything on task so I could enjoy talking with my friends and relax. I would definitely hire her again and recommend her to my friends. She is Tremendous!

I am a mother of three children and I hired Chris to be our family's private chef. She also was the chef for our occasional dinner parties chef as well as coordinated them for the last two years. We absolutely enjoyed her cooking and loved her easy going nature. Our family will miss Chris profusely as we are moving to Austin.

I was searching for a chef to come and prepare meals on location for a film project in San Diego. I searched several culinary websites and reviews on yelp, FB and other places. I narrowed it down to 3 chefs but I knew in my gut that Chef Zaida was going to be the final pick. She immediately saw vision for my project. She understood it and it was immediately in tune to the entire project and all the days and meals involved. We settled on pricing and a meal plan. She was easy to work with and highly accommodating but that was just the beginning. Chef Zaida and her assistant arrived the first evening well in advance of prep time to ensue everything would go as planned. The 5 star meal was amazing and we were blown away. The following days (I am certain) were a challenge for Chef Zaida as all of our plans were changed due to the filming locations and needs. She was now having to work under major constraints, changes with limitations and still managed to execute BEAUTIFUL and SCRUMPTIOUS meals for our guests, our film crew and our team. Her sensitivity to our project was above and beyond what I could have imagined or expected for anyone in her position. She excelled all expectations. AS A MATTER OF FACT... I had some items that I needed from the store but did not have a vehicle. She did some personal shopping for me. #wow Lastly, what it all came down to... the meals, the service, the attitude of both she and her assistant were incredible. They prepared meals for up to 15 people at a time and did so with ease. We are so grateful that we will be hiring her on a regular basis for all future projects in the San Diego area. I highly recommend Chef Zaida for ANY occasion!! You will not be disappointed. OH! And I almost forgot!! What Chef gives you their recipes?? This one. She overheard some of our guests and team raving about certain meals and she sent us those recipes for them to take home!! #awesome

Chef Marckende was amazing! He came up with an incredibly creative menu (all vegan/vegetarian) with dumplings, potstickers, ramen, and an amazing chocolate, strawberry, blueberry layer cake. He was very responsive in the planning process, even coordinating the on-site setup/visit the night before because we were celebrating a birthday with a group of friends at an AirBnb. Couldn't have imagined a better dining experience for celebrating a birthday with the group of 11. He was very professional, came with all of the necessary supplies, took care of service and clean-up. If you're looking to choose a chef for an event, you're missing out if you don't choose Chef Marckende. He'll create a memorable meal and take care of all the details so you don't have to even think about doing anything else other than enjoying a great meal with great company.

Flavor Affinity and Chef Baker came highly recommended by a co-worker of mine.  I decided to use this service because Chef Baker was not only the first to respond to my email,  (I sent out the same email to 3 private chef/caterers) but had the most value built into his quote. He had pre-built packages but ultimately allowed us to design the whole menu! We chose a 4 course option and could not have been happier with the food, ambiance, and decor.  Lastly, as the party began to wind down, I noticed that almost the whole service area and glassware was cleaned up without anyone noticing. It was a truly impressive evening and Flavor Affinity comes highly recommended from myself and surely anyone who has had the pleasure to work with them.

For the last 3 years, Chef Monterey has been a constant fixture at our events.  Her food is absolutely top-notch, and she always comes up with just the right dishes for each dinner!  We've done everything from a Western-themed birthday party with authentic BBQ to a classy Old Hollywood New Year's Eve where she served an eight (!!!) course tasting menu, and her food just knocks it out of the park.   Chef Monterey is most definitely in our top 3 private chefs in Southern California (and we've gone through A LOT), and if you want absolutely AMAZING food made by a dynamic young chef with a personality to match, she's your girl!

We arrived at the Fishbone Kitchen where Chef Bear is the executive chef and were immediately served many nice dishes of fresh ceviche while we waited for our class. Once in the kitchen, we learned many cool techniques for knife skills and other techniques like oyster shucking and removing the skin from a salmon without using a knife! Chef Bear was informative and hospitable. The only reason I am removing a star is because the kitchen we were in was very small (he did have a larger kitchen for us but the location fell through at the last moment) and took away from the experience for some of the participants due to it being difficult to see or hear -- positioning and noise level was a culprit. But all in all it was a very cool experience at a very reasonable rate. Chef Bear did everything he could to customize the class for us according to our interests, needs and experience levels. I would recommend him.

Julianna was very professional in setting up all details of our event and gave a discount for the number of people we had at our event. She wrote out a very detailed contract to what would be served, time they would arrive to set up and to start serving our guests. She went over and beyond when she included a sweet and special treat for our daughter that was a spectacular surprise, Chocolate Covered Strawberries at no additional charge! Jorge the chef's meat was amazing and all the fixings! In addition they served quesadillas as an appetizer and Julianna brought them out on a tray to serve our guests! She also made a menu and asked for a pic to include! Like I said she went over and beyond! Everyone enjoyed the food, service and people! All wanting to use this company for their catering needs! Thank You Takobar!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do private cooking lessons cost?

You can take private cooking classes to have fun, to learn a new skill, to improve your health, to bond with your partner, to enjoy a playful first date or to have a unique birthday party experience. Nationally the average cost of private cooking lessons ranges between $100 and $150. Prices can vary, depending on where you live, the type of cooking class you’re taking, the ingredients the chef provides, and the reputation of the chef. Cooking classes with Anthony Bourdain will clearly cost more than classes with a local restaurant owner. The number of people in the class will also affect the cost, with group lessons often priced per person to account for the cost of ingredients. For example, for group lessons, a brunch workshop may cost an average of $70 per person, a steak dinner with sides could cost an average of $80-$85 per person, and a sushi lesson could cost an average of $100 per person. Ingredients play a major role in cost, as the chef will pre-purchase the food you will be working with. Weekday classes will usually cost less than weekend classes.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

  • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
  • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
  • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
  • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
  • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
