I can't even start saying all the great things Lynne taught me. After being stuck at an intermediate level for what seemed an eternity, she managed to guide me to get to the next level. The whole learning experience reached a completely new meaning and made a huge difference in my understanding and proficiency. Thanks Lynne!!!

I had hired Desiree to produce long form guides that covered all aspects of various government benefit programs. Desiree did an outstanding job with every project I sent her. We had hired quite a few writers to do this type of work for us and Desiree was always at the top in terms of quality. I would gladly hire Desiree again to produce future content for us.

Stevie is great! He provided me with a last minute addition to tie together the finished product on a client's site. What I applaud the most about Stevie is that he sent me a respectable and reasonable quote in what seemed to be about twelve seconds after I had posted my request. He's was very quick with answering the many broad and specific, technical questions regarding the project at hand, and made the whole process just a breeze. If any of you are reading this review, what you should take away from it is the fact that Steven is an absolute grand master wizard in developing custom WordPress plugins that suit your site's needs. Long story short, I needed a plugin that allowed my client's site to perform a verification check in a user's account to correspond with their iOS devices' UDID to make sure they really did purchase my client's app, then letting them do any unit management/administrator for their tutoring classes on the app from the website. Definitely contacting again (soon here, actually) for more Wordpress related work. Thanks buddy!

Working with Jessica was super easy and a great experience. She helped me with the writing of my ebook. We used an outline I had written to discuss my concepts and thoughts. She then wrote a draft, which began an iterative process. She used a writing style that matched what I needed and through a back and forth process we completed exactly the book I was hoping for! Jessica was reliable, patient, very easy to work with and finished this on the timeframe that I needed. I wholeheartedly recommend her and will use her again!

Katy has done a phenomenal job for us writing multiple blog articles where she held interviews with our creative members. She was able to highlight different topics that we wanted to focus on while staying true to the stories of the members. Katy is extremely responsive and easy to work with. She has done an excellent job and we would definitely recommend working with her.

I've experienced many of Sean Michael Robinson's talents first-hand; I've performed and recorded with Sean the musician / songwriter, I've commissioned Sean the visual artist to create vibrant, eye-catching posters, and I've read and enjoyed Sean the author's articles and books. It's rare that someone can simultaneously excel in so many disciplines; but he really does. He's also an excellent instructor. Part of why he's such a great instructor is that he's also a great student of all these different skills. He is very familiar with beginner learning curves, getting over the bump after early successes, and what it takes to master a craft and he has the patience and kindness to help other people through those struggles too.

Joseph Descans helped me with the editing of several documents. His knowledge and editing skills were outstanding, and his patience with the process was the best part. It can be tremendously frustrating when you have "writer's block" and the words just don't come out right, but a patient tutor is such a great asset to have in your back pocket!

About 3 years ago I stumbled on a flyer advertising a cartooning class taught by Sean Michael Robinson. As I had been an amateur cartoonist since the 8th grade I was intrigued…a friend at the art supply store I go to encouraged me to sign up, stating Sean “has quite a following”. I must say that after the very first class I was more than pleasantly surprised! Sean is one of the best art instructors I’ve ever had. He is engaging, kind, and dynamic. His classes are challenging yet fun! Sean pushes you out of your boundaries to explore your creativity – in a way that is at once exciting and non-threatening. I learned sooo much from Sean about drawing, inking, perspective, color – he covers it all. My personal experience after a few of his classes was that I was very motivated to continue – because Sean’s instruction and encouragement had given me the confidence I needed. This weekend I will be exhibiting my comics, watercolors and linocuts at a local festival and as I told Sean ~ I couldn’t have done it without the little push I got from him! ~Stephanie Morgan

My resumes are written with the five key elements that hiring managers respond positively to: clear, concise, meaningful, quantifiable and targeted. And, I make sure they are visually beautiful to look at so what you end up with is a highly polished written piece that wholly flatters you and your abilities. Working one-on-one with my clients as we define a career campaign and plan-of-action. Resume writing should be a collaborative and learning experience on both parts, which takes time and is why I prefer to work for myself rather than with an agency. You will have my undivided attention, and we will take the time necessary to get it right.

I undertake projects with unparalleled reliability, sense of urgency, and perfectionism. I even just now looked up the spelling of "unparalleled" though I know full well how it is spelled. I enjoy fine-tuning document organization and wording.

I have shown thousands of people how to write and publish a book plus use it as a "big business card." My goal is your success! After building a multimillion dollar business online, I also show others how to do the same. My favorite thing is working with people to define and refine their message for a book to inspire others and generate new business for themselves. I love looking both at big picture and specific details.

My expertise was earned through practice and passion. I love crafting fresh content and polishing my clients' work. To me, the crazy little details of grammar and the nuances of vocabulary are half the fun. My clients feel I exceed their expectations. I love that.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
