I admit I was worried about hiring a stranger from a public online site to work inside my home. But, I had no choice. I decided to hire Mr Larry Allen of Handee Werx, for some bathroom work. I needed to remove a broken toilet, install a new one and install a new shower head. He was the first professional to contact me and offered the best price. His friendly and knowledgable attitude immediately put me at ease. He arrived on time for the job. He was prepared and ready to work. I was delayed because I had a problem buying the new toilet and getting missing parts. I was very surprised and appreciative that he waited patiently for me! Then, he helped me unload the toilet, treating me like his friend. He performed his job neatly and efficiently with quality results. The new toilet and shower head look perfect! He even removed the old toilet and left my bathroom neat and tidy. His professionalism definitely shows in his attitude and his work. He did a beautiful job! It's not every day you hire someone, a stranger, who is knowledgeable and kind, who treats you with respect and doesn't try to take advantage of you. But, that's exactly who he is! I feel so blessed to have found him and will definitely hire him again. Thank you!!

Installation of flooring. I was not going to install in the kitchen flooring because of a cabinet that sits right above my fridge. Mike the owner said he would move the cupboard up an inch so the flooring and the cupboard would still leave room for the fridge. No problem and free of charge! How great right? He had his laborers do the flooring BEFORE and then told me he was unable to move the cabinet. Since he couldn't leave my fridge in the middle of the kitchen floor, he had his guy force it into place and cracked the cabinet. NOT only that, there was a vent that was suppose to go just under the front portion of the fridge which was already cut out....but now could not fit into the hole because the fridge was too tight against the upper cabinet. So...he had a piece of flooring cut and put into the hole with the grain going in the opposite direction!!!!!!!!! I now have a cracked and ruined cabinet, a floor with patchwork and will never be able to move my fridge for cleaning behind and under. I can only imagine what damage was done to the new flooring under the fridge. BTW, I work for a union contractor so the laughs on me.

Juan did an amazing job on my bathroom tile project. He tiled a full wall (10'x8') and my shower/tub from floor to ceiling. Some of my walls were uneven to begin with, but Juan found a way to make everything looks really straight and beautiful. Juan also communicated honestly and clearly, and arrived on time and worked hard all day. I would highly recommend him to anyone I know.

We have been working with Eddie on multiple properties for over 5 years now. His work has ranged from very simple to major remodeling and home repairs (plumbing, electrical, kitchen remodel, tile floors/counter tops, painting, roof repair and more). We really value his honesty, responsiveness and reliability. The guy is personable and he offers good ideas. And his work is very high quality, for very fair rates. A good contractor is a great resource - I would definitely recommend him.

We had leak from the walk-in/Jacuzzi tub against tiled walls in our recently remodeled master bathroom. Three different tile or shower/tub contractors with their solutions were unable to fix it. The same holds for our vanity’s splash back board that cracked during installation none of the marble/stone professionals that came to look at it could fix it without taking it apart to their shop. Ernesto Ortiz suggested epoxy grout for the tub/wall and special glue for the marble both for very, very fair price. He was very skillful, professional, clean work site before and after and great personality. The results were incredible on the splash board you can not see the huge crack that was there at all. The epoxy grouting looks great and the joint no longer leaks.

We are a construction company in LA and OC that prides ourselves on workmanship and detail. We've gone through many tile subcontractors and have been disappointed every time until we met Ruben with LA tile and stone. He's very methodical and careful with each tile that is laid – he has great recommendations for patterns and colors when he asked his opinion. A few times I went through the tile showers and showed him tiles That needed to move over an 1/8 inch and he fixed it on the spot with a great attitude and no complaints -On top of it all he has great customer service skills and interacts with the clients very well. We are extremely proud of his work and will be using him repeatedly – great job Ruben! Shawn 11 Dezign-714 724 1733

Victor is the hardest working floor guy I've ever met, and the next hardest worker is his helper/friend Carlos. We had laminate flooring put into 3 rooms and carpeting in the other two, so it took about 2 1/2 days to complete the entire job. But, the results were worth the wait. Our home looks completely new with the flooring he installed. They start work early and work late because they are dedicated professionals who want to please the customer and make sure we were satisfied. They also installed new baseboards that the painted before installation and they look great. A few of our neighbors came over to look at the completed job, and they were amazed at the total make-over our house received. In fact, a couple of them took Victors cards because they are now considering new flooring in their 60 year old Lakewood houses. Victor gave us a very reasonable bid, he arrived on time and stayed late, plus...he cleaned up his mess. Both Victor and Carlos were polite, professional, and work ...work...work. We are very satisfied customers of Rite-A-Way Flooring Services. If you consider this business, ask Victor for a referral to the Baker's. I'd love to show anyone how beautiful Victor and Carlos made our house look. In fact, we are now saving up to have Victor replace the flooring in our Kitchen and Family Room. That's how much we loved working with him. I'd recommend this company if you want new flooring. They do it all.

Gabriel is very professional and talented. We hired him to do one project and then asked him back many times for other things. He is a perfectionist. He tiled the kitchen and two bathrooms. He also did some framing and carpentry work. We wish we would have used him for windows and cabinets and on our next project we will. Thank you Gabriel.

This guy is a real artist. He took an antique dresser a previous owner had installed as a bathroom vanity without drawers or protection of the wood and added 8 custom drawers and inlaid glass tile on the top including a beautiful backsplash in addition to refinishing the vanity. I can't imagine this vanity could look any better, and I am so happy I opted to repair it rather than replace it. It is now truly one of a kind. Jim is a perfectionist who did not give up when pieces of the vanity fell apart; he simply added new pieces that appear to have been there forever. If you want something wooden of value created or repaired, seriously, talk to Jim White. You will be amazed. I would love to attach the before an after pics but if you email him I am sure he will send you some as well.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

  • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
    • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install tile?

Tile installation costs vary widely depending on the tiles you choose, where you want them installed, and what kind of demolition and surface preparation you need to have done. The national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The more tiles that need to be cut by hand and laid on the surface, the higher the total cost. Tile installation professionals can handle many different types of stone, ceramic and porcelain tiles, applying them in kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and entranceways. They can create anything from artistic mosaic backsplashes in your kitchen to modern shower enclosures to rustic patios in your backyard. Tile installation professions often can remove existing flooring or old tiles and replace drywall. Tile prices range from $1 to more than $50 per square foot — handmade ones are even priced individually — depending on the material. Rustic, handmade or special-use tiles cost more to install because they must be applied to the surface one by one, rather than in a sheet. For most jobs, tile installation costs are based on the square footage of the project. For example, a standard 6-foot by 8-foot shower tile installation can average $1,200-$1,600, depending on whether the tiles go to the top of the shower or to the ceiling. The total cost of a tiling project also includes the grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps, and tile mounting materials like backer board.

How much does it cost to install tiles in a kitchen?

One of the most common kitchen upgrades is installing decorative backsplash tiles in the space between the counters and cabinets. It’s a chance for homeowners to get creative while also protecting the kitchen walls from splashes and stains. Like all tiling projects, kitchen tile project costs depend on the tiles you choose, installation materials such as grout and mortar, and any surface materials, like replacement backer board. The national average for a tiled kitchen backsplash is $490-$750. In general, pricing averages $10-$40 per square foot for installation, not including tile. Some professional tile installers have a minimum day rate for small projects, which averages $350.
