I have a home in Huntington Beach that had an existing furnace and ductwork. I wanted to install AC utilizing the existing system. I consulted with several HVAC contractors and received quotes. Mina was the most knowledgeable of the group of contractors, provided the best suggestions, and also had a very competitive price. During the installation the ductwork turned out to be in poor condition. Mina replaced the ductwork and only charged me the cost of material and not the labor. For anyone who has done contracting this in unheard of. Change orders are often outrageously priced. Mina is an honest man who does good work and cares about satisfaction with the job. If you have the opportunity to use Mina I highly recommend him. The system has been installed and running for 1 month and all continues to work great. Thank you Mina.

Air Duct Professionals did a fantastic job on my duct cleaning project. I gave them a count of AC vents and exhaust fans for their estimate. They not only quoted me the most competitive price but they held their pricing. They showed up on time and even came earlier to help work around my schedule. The technician was very professional and cleaned up after himself. He made sure to cover our furniture with plastic so the dust never spread. This is a truly professional contractor and I would definitely recommend hiring them.

I highly recommend Sam. He came within a few hours of my request, charged only the basic service fee, gave me lots of maintenance information for my LG appliances. I plan to hire him again for HVAC and some electrical repairs.

Fantastic to work with Joel Mayorga of Platinum Plumbing He was the first to respond to my work request. Answered every question almost immediately! I have tenants living in my home in Los Angeles & I live in Miami. I wanted someone I could feel confident with doing the work 3000 miles away. My tenants have been going without hot water due to ineffectual work by American Home Shield repairs My former TAKAGI tankless was never vented properly nor valves put on for easy maintenance. It was a 15 year old tank Joel described via this app exactly what I needed. I sent him photos so he could see the space. He offered me several options I decided to get a NEW Noritz tankless heater. He was at my leased home within 2 hours ; new heater & all necessary parts in hand! It was a big job but in a few hours; DONE! He returned the next day to make sure all was ok & water temp was holding. He even serviced my HVAC heater at no extra cost! Will I be using JOEL again?! YOU BET I will! Using him for ALL my heating & AC & plumbing needs!

I wish all contractors were as responsive as Air-O-Stat. I had a small flood that blew out two furnaces. When I called that sent a tech out the next day and gave me a specific time for the appointment (rather than the normal some time between 12 and 5) and he was on time! They fully explained what was wrong and went to get replacement circuit boars and installed them immediately. I was a difficult issue to deal with since all the functioning parts of the furnaces had been under water but the fixed it quickly and were a delight to deal with. Will definitely use them exclusively in the future.

EXCELLENT SERVICE!! After one of my wall A/C units stop working during the hottest days of the year I decided to look into getting a quote for an HVAC system. Carlos was one of the first to respond even though he was busy due to the hot weather he still made time to come out to give us an estimate. His quote was reasonable and well detailed at no time did we feel pressure on the contrary my husband & I were putting the pressure on him to start as soon as possible. Him & his brother were punctual, knowledgeable and very professional answering all our questions. The job was done in a timely manner. We are completely satisfied and definitely will be recommending Carlos to our friends and family.

An old a/c unit was, no cost estimate, to be replaced with a new unit compatible with the existing split system...; all was done as to the estimate at a reasonable cost in a very timely fashion; I would reference this a/c contractor as being very competent, professional, from being through the completion of the project as estimated....

Overall very good experience. Hector is very honest. Got a good feeling about the company and in speaking with him. Pricing very reasonable. Overall clean work. Very responsive company. We had 2 entire HVAC and furnace systems replaced. Unfortunately furnace had a technical glitch in the system within the first couple of days. As soon as they found out the problem, someone came out to fix it immediately. Now everything is running smoothly. You never know with any product, if something might go wrong or a part may be recslled...so it’s important to have a company that is very responsive and ready to fix any problems encountered. We felt that we were in good hands.

I am honored to be Vern Hackett's first review... My German Shepherd puppy decided ripping the wiring from the central AC/Heating unit to the house was a fun idea, she ripped it out of the wall so bad that the remaining wires to connect weren't even visible. I got multiple service call quotes but Vern was the only one that gave me a rough estimate based on the issue not just what his service call would be. He came out the next morning, was extremely friendly and professional. While he worked he told me exactly what he was doing and checking and gave me best & worst case scenario as he went. Because of the nature of the damage any dishonest contractor would have easily been able to make me pay an arm & a leg thinking the whole thing would need to be rewired, I am grateful to have found Vern because even though it was not easy he managed to pull enough wire to connect to. I will definitely be a return customer and recommend him to friends & family. If you want someone reliable, knowledgeable, and honest then Vern is your guy!!!!!!

This was our first experience with Thumbtack and, first time hiring Beach Cities Mechanical. We had been using another HVAC contractor for years until we recently became dissatisfied with their work. Travis was responsive and communicative. Even though he was busy, he accommodated our schedule. He was punctual, professional, and got the job done. His pricing was also fair. And, as a bonus, he seems like a genuinely nice guy. So far, our a/c is working great, and I'm sure we'll be working with Travis and Beach Cities Mechanical again!

Simon Central Comfort AC and Heat Repair originally did some venting work for us as a subcontractor for our general contractor, which we were pleased with. When we needed a new furnace, I knew that he was the one to call. Simon helped walk us through various furnace options and he and his team did a great job on the installation. His pricing was also very competitive and a good value, and he's easy to communicate with.

Outstanding from start to finish. The other three HVAC contractors on Thumbtack wanted to charge for the estimate even hiding it by saying the estimate as an analysis ! (Not !) St.John's estimate was free, the work was quick, the price was fair, and the contractor was a pleasure to work with ! C&H

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

        What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

        • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
        • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
        • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
        • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
          • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
        • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
          • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
        • Your home has humidity problems.
        • Your home has excessive dust.
          • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
        • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
          • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
        • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
          • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
