We have 2 dog and 1 started being aggressive toward the other. Within a few days of contact Stephani came over and reviewed our dogs and our situation, came up with a plan, got my husband on board with the training (THAT was a miracle!) and started training us how to handle our dogs better. She's very thorough and has a very behavioral approach (dog whisperer-ish) which we really connected with. We look forward to our learning sessions, Thanks Stephani!

T'was my lucky day indeed the day I found Lois Hampton. We arranged a meet and greet meeting and I, as well as my little dog, GraciBel, were immediately comfortable with Lois and her husband George, GraciBel had been abused and was leery of any other human being, especially men. GB was immediately comfortable with both Lois and George. Lois does indeed go above and beyond the call in many ways, One of the wonderful things she always does is to keep you updated of what is going on with your pet while in her care. She is kind, and loving, and so caring. During your pet's visit, she takes the time to send emails to let you know how your pet is adjusting and, in addition, sends photographs. On our second visit, she sent me a photograph of GraciBel, sitting atop the sofa, wrapped around George's neck. I immediately knew this is a kind and gentle man as GraciBel would not get near a man at this stage of our rescue. From that time, when I pulled up to their home to drop her off for a visit, she would wag her tail, jump out of the car, and run up to the door. What a wonderful feeling! Lois and her husband, George, are wonderful people. The quality of their caring for your pet is beyond description. I am totally and completely at ease and comfortable when little GraciBel is in their care. I can think of nothing that would improve our experinece with these lovely people. In addition they are so accommodating. If a schedule changes, there is never a problem. They accommodate you in every way. In summary, my limited vocabulary does ot allow me to adequately describe these two wonderful people - Lois and George Hamptom - and what they have added to GraciBel's life and the caring and love and help they have given to her and to me in GB's transition from an abused little dog to a lovable little girl.. And for that I shall always be grateful. They are the best of the best! T'was indeed my lucky day when I met them and to now have them in our lives.

I received a referral for Tara from one of my pet activist friends. I am particular about who I let care for my dogs and she did a fantastic job caring for and grooming my dog Guinness. My husband and I call Tara the dog whisperer. She has a calm demeanor that my dogs sense and respond to.

I am a college student looking to help others in any way I can; one way is by walking dogs, and I am available throughout the week before 4:00 p.m. Over the years, my family has had multiple pets, including dogs. My aunt owned two neo mastiffs. I enjoyed taking them on walks before we had to move and give them up to another loving family. I am motivated to help in any way I can.

I walk and sit dogs. I've done it a lot of times. I understand how people can be so busy and can't walk their dogs, or have to go out of town where dogs just can't go. I will do everything I can to make sure the dogs are safe and happy.

There is no one in this area who comes close to having my level of education or experience. I have a graduate degree that focused on zoology and animal learning, plus numerous training certifications that I maintain by continued practice of current training methods and continuing education. I have worked in a variety of environments including: veterinary clinics, federal government, Colorado and California state governments, behavior department at the University of California, and animal shelters where I worked with thousands of dogs. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is included in a dog grooming?

Dog grooming is so much more than giving your dog a bath. Dog grooming is a broad term that covers all aspects of canine cleanliness and hygiene. The services included in dog grooming will vary based on your needs and what you choose to pay. Unless they are rolling in cowpies or playing in mud puddles, most dogs are okay getting a shampoo bath only as needed. You’ll know when they need it if they smell bad or are bringing dirt into the house. Some dogs, like shepherds and shih tzus, have thick coats that can get matted and tangled without regular care. Pro dog groomers can deftly blow dry a dog’s hair after a bath so that it is shiny and smooth. Dog grooming can include brushing that detangles dog hair and also thins the undercoat to minimize shedding.

Dog grooming also includes hygiene services such as toothbrushing and ear cleaning. Clean teeth are important to the health of your dog, and the pros have the patience and proper technique to get it done. Regular dog grooming can stave off tear stains, those reddish stains below your dog’s eyes. Anal gland expression is something not many people want to do on their own, even if they love their dog. A dog groomer can safely and efficiently release any blocked anal gland fluid. Other dog grooming services include nail trimming and clipping. Nationally, dog grooming prices range from $60 to $80. Most dog groomers offer discounts to customers who purchase monthly packages or bundle multiple grooming services at one time.

      What is a dog groomer?

A dog groomer is a service professional who provides dog grooming and basic hygiene care for your dog. Dog groomers are typically animal lovers who are competent and comfortable working with a wide range of dog breeds and temperaments. Dog groomers are knowledgeable about the care needs for different kinds of dog coats. A poodle will have different haircut needs than a shih tzu, for example, so it pays to have a trained pro provide the proper cut. Good dog groomers know how to safely clean your dog’s teeth, bathe your dog, and cut their nails without going too short. They understand how to trim the hair from around your dog’s face, express anal glands, and clean your dog’s ears. Many people who choose dog grooming as a profession also pursue other dog services such as attending veterinary school, running a doggy day care center, working as a professional dog walker, and more.

      What is a dog groomer?

Keep your family dogs happy, healthy and clean with regular dog grooming. A dog groomer is a business owner or employee of a dog grooming business who specializes in dog hygiene and grooming. To find a reputable dog groomer, research reviews, ask for references and confirm that the groomer has good standing in the dog grooming community.

A dog groomer should be comfortable and competent working with dogs of all breeds and temperaments. Typically a groomer will have trained with other groomers and taken educational courses to keep abreast of the latest safety information and techniques. There are brick-and-mortar dog grooming businesses, as well as mobile dog groomers who bring all their equipment and provide their services at your home or location. In some cases, brick-and-mortar businesses will also pick up and return your dog for an additional fee.

What vaccines do dogs need to be groomed?

It’s important to make sure your dog is up to date on its vaccines before taking it to a groomer. Vaccinations keep your dog and the other dogs that use the establishment healthy. Viruses can linger long after a dog is gone, so an unvaccinated dog can infect a number of other dogs days or even months after their visit. Find out about your dog groomer’s vaccination policies, and think carefully about receiving services from a company that does not require vaccinations. Here are the main vaccinations that are generally required for dog grooming:

      • Parvovirus: Parvo is a nasty virus that can kill dogs within 48-72 hours of infection. The virus is incredibly persistent and, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, is resistant to heat, cold, humidity and drying. It’s spread by dog-to-dog contact or contact with contaminated feces, environments (food and water bowls, collars and leashes, etc.,) or people.
      • Adenovirus 2: Dogs receive this vaccination to protect against canine infectious hepatitis. The vaccination can also helps prevent canine cough.
      • Canine distemper virus: Distemper has no known cure and can cause serious pain, illness, and even death, although recovery is possible with medical intervention.
      • Rabies: This disease attacks the central nervous system and — when untreated — will
      • lead to death. The CDC recommends euthanizing an unvaccinated animal that has been exposed to rabies, although six-month isolation followed by vaccination is also permissible.
      • Para-influenza: Canine para-influenza leads to kennel cough and an unhappy dog.

How much does it cost to groom a dog?

Dog grooming costs depend on the service your pet requires. Nationally, the average price for dog grooming ranges from $40 to $100, varying by location. Not surprisingly, dog grooming on New York’s Upper East Side costs nearly double what it costs in a small town in Montana. Dog groomers typically handle every aspect of your dog’s beauty and hygiene, from tooth brushing to hairstyling. One potential way to save is to have your dog groomed at your doggy daycare — sometimes they offer discounts on dog grooming prices for clients. Here are some examples of average dog grooming costs in the San Francisco Bay Area. Please note these prices would include transportation fees for picking up and dropping off your dog to your home:

      • Nails: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
      • Toothbrushing: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
      • Tooth scraping (removal of plaque from teeth to prevent infection), with anesthesia: $600
      • Tooth scraping, without anesthesia: $400.
      • Wash and dry: $60
      • Ears: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
      • Grooming package: $130 — includes wash, nails, teeth, ears, gland expression and haircut
