Karen Andrea Interior Design, simply put, is the best. We could not be more pleased with her designs, aesthetics, and creativity that transformed our significant remodel of a rather dated kitchen, master bedroom and bath, living room and dining room to places of beauty. Karen Andrea's focus, attention to detail, sense of responsibility, and straight forward honesty keep us informed on a step-by-step basis for a complicated and coordinated remodel process with ease and grace. All of this on time, on promise, and on budget.

I always thought I was fairly good at decorating my own house, but I recently had the challenge of moving after 26 years, giving away all my furniture and starting over. Determined to have a fresh look I met with Clare in my home and in shopping expeditions. She helped me define what our new design style would be and as a result avoided major purchasing mistakes. Her ability to understand scale and gifting for envisioning each room, time and again proved pivotal in the decisions and purchase making process. To say she elevated my design aesthetic for our new home is an understatement. Also to find out I had made major mistakes on my own before, helped me feel totally confident in the final look because of her excellent taste. Clare has made our house transition a thoroughly enjoyable process. I have great gratitude for her ability to listen, respect and understand our needs, and at the same time give invaluable input, direction and resources.

Christine is an incredible resource! Not only does she have a fabulous sense of design, but she also has relationships with every resource you might need - from painters to electricians to contractors - in the Ventura/Santa Barbara region. She can manage teams and projects big and small. I highly recommend her for your next remodel. You won't regret it!

Renata is extremely knowledgable and easy to work with. It has been a delight knowing her. From our first conversation about my house I already started seeing the value of having a talented interior designer working with me. She quickly started giving me ideas, concepts, and drawings of how my place could look. Since she completed my place I can't recall someone coming to my place and not telling me how awesome it is.

Alicia helped us transform and update our home. We had remodeled the bathrooms and changed the flooring a couple years ago but hadn't changed the furnishings and the interior look. Even with the completion of the remodel the house was looking dated and dreary and needed an overhaul. I LOVE how our home looks now. Alicia had great ideas and was willing to collaborate with us and our ideas to create a new look for our living room, dining room and family room. She helped us redesign a wall with mirrors in our living room which other decorators had told us we needed to rip out as it had a dated look. Alicia helped redesign the wall with panels to give the room a contemporary look. It went from a wall that needed to be torn down to a wall that looks fabulous and is a focal point. I smile now with delight when I walk in the redesigned rooms. Thank you Alicia for all your time, effort and care with all the design details.

Lloyd has provided design consulting on several projects: renovating a guest room, re-designing a living room, and also, all the interior design on a second home in a ranch area. She has an impeccable eye for color, and is able to coordinate style, color, and form to create spaces that are light, comfortable, and inviting. She is superbly talented and I recommend her highly!

      About

Interior redesign is called "use what you have decorating". It is the process of having a design consultant (not a high priced interior designer) come into your home and help you fix the ten most common mistakes homeowners make when designing their homes. You can learn what those top ten mistakes are when you visit my website later on. Our goal is to give you more conversation areas, better lighting, more of a designer feel and look, but most of all a comfortable place where you and your family can live, relax and entertain! When we first meet and take a walkthrough of your home, I will tell you about the challenges I confront, every day-basic decorating errors. Then in order to solve these problems we need to recognize yours first. The principles we will embody in your redesign can be simple and logical and it does not even have to take alot of time! Usually, we can do a whole home redesign in one day using what you already own, borrowing from one room to another and moving furniture, lighting, accessories, and handling all those top ten decorating mistakes you probably are worried about already having made in your home. What we are going to do is walk through every room in your home, and the two of us are going to redecorate it together. We're going to have fun doing it too, because we are going to identify the mistakes quickly and use only what you like to correct them! And you're going to get an added bonus - instant gratification! My company is based on the belief that my customers' needs are of the utmost importance. I am committed to meeting those needs. As a result, a high percentage of my business is from repeat customers and referrals. I would welcome the opportunity to earn your trust and deliver you the best service in the industry. Let's do this! Let's redesign your home in just one day!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

      • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
      • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
      • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
      • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

      • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
      • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
      • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
      • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
