Review a little late but Daren did an awesome job installing our vinyl fence around our property. Did a lot of price comparisons and his came out on top. His guys came in as scheduled and even worked in the pouring rain to get job done! Finished on time considering the bad weather. Darren himself came out to make sure things were getting done. Very nice and easy to deal with. All in the the project went great. Definitely give him a call!

Gerhard was great! He was really flexible and really easy to schedule in for inspection and installation and was able to install my oven for much less than other contractors were asking for. One minor complaint is that he was late to the inspection and installation both times because of traffic, but overall it was still a great experience.

We hired Syd a second time to tackle a list of projects. He professionally installed a window Air Conditioning unit so that it is safe and secure. He fixed some outdoor light fixtures and refinished a light. He fixed two broken chairs. He repaired and antique piece of furniture, moved it and then secured it for earthquake safety. We will use him again.

I hired Santos to re-tile my bathroom, install new hardwood floor, install a new vanity, drywall and paint and I was completed impressed by his work and his attention to detail. There was not a single tile that was off. There were no hiccups in the project and he was very knowledgeable in what he was doing. He provided me with more information that other individuals I had hired failed to provide me with. I honestly would refer Santos to anybody in a heart beat and so excited for my next project with him. His estimates are very reasonable as well, which is always a plus.

David Austin has been finishing a numbers of project around my home, over the past year. David shows up as scheduled, keeps me inform on what is going on with my project. He refinished my kitchen cabinets. And During he process he procected the floors and my furniture, he kept the work area clean and on schedule. After installing all new knobs my kitchen looks up dated fresh and clean. David also resurfaced my kitchen counter tops and again I cannot stress what a pleasure it was to have work completed by someone who takes pride in his workmanship. I love to entertained out doors and I was going to throw away my wooden patio furniture that had multiple coats of paints and years of wear. David assured me that he could refinish the patio furniture. Lets just say that I’m happy and proud of my teak wood patio furniture they look better than new. Thank-you David, for your honest opinion and the work you have done on my many projects around my home.

Almost ten year's ago, we needed some flooring done and found Fredrik's "handyman" ad in the local paper. Met him, liked him, hired him, and ten years later, Fredrik is still our "handyman" of choice, and also a great friend. We put handyman in quotes because Fredrik's work far exceeds what one would expect from a typical fix-it person. The patio and wood deck he installed, the semi-enclosed area he converted into a sunroom, and the countless other carpentry, painting and miscellaneous upgrades he has done in both our personal and rental homes are of the highest quality. Fredrik gets the job done and the result is a professional piece of work. When we need any work done in our home, we call Fredrik first, and trust him to do the job right, steer us in the right direction if he can't do the work.

Levi was able to modify my steel bumper to accommodate the installation of my new hitch mounted tire carrier by relocating the recovery points on the bumper further apart from each other. This allowed me to install the tire carrier without having to use a hitch extension. His work was excellent and the price was very reasonable. I would definitely contact him again for any further welding needs.

When we bought our first house two years ago, we knew it needed tons of work, but had no idea how or where to start. Matt and his partner Gavin saved the day. They transformed a beat-up 1905 Victorian (which some people thought should be torn down) into a beautiful, liveable home in less than 8 weeks. We had no idea how to tackle a project like this, and felt like we could trust them completely with the things we didn't understand. The price was fair, and we couldn't believe how fast they did it all. They took on almost everything, including building new walls, ripping up the old floor, running new plumbing and electrical, redoing the bathroom, repairing the siding, installing new doors and windows, and installing cabinets. We only needed a few other subcontractors (painters, sheetrockers, hardwood floor specialists), which they helped us manage. Of course, we still have lots more projects in mind. When we just did some more remodeling this spring, we didn't choose Matt--and we regret it. The project ended up far outside our timeline and budget (7 months!) as we tried to manage it all ourselves. Looking forward to having Matt back again to help us with future work.

Outstanding job! Ray and his employee were able to finish the job in 2 days, were always on time, trusting (left the key under the mat) and did an excellent job. In fact, Ray did such a good job that we are having him install crown molding around the ceiling and windows and he is re-staining and refinishing our oak wood staircase. I highly recommend him for any of the above jobs I highlighted.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How many types of welding are there?

Welding is a method of fusing together two or more pieces of metal using electricity or flame. Welding is used to construct buildings, make metal sculptures, build and repair cars, make gates and furniture, and for many other practical and aesthetic uses. There are multiple types of welding. Here is an overview of the most popular methods:

    • Stick welding: Formally known as shielded metal arc welding, stick welding uses extreme heat applied at the seam of two separate metals to melt them together. A third (intermediary) metal may also be incorporated for added strength. As the metals cool, they are bonded together.
    • Metal inert gas (MIG) welding: Formally known as gas metal arc welding, MIG welding uses a tool to feed metal wire into the weld puddle while an electrical arc melts the wire, which will fuse to the base metal upon cooling.
    • Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding: Formally referred to gas tungsten arc welding, TIG welding is a similar process MIG welding, but instead of using a tool that continuously feeds metal wire into the weld puddle, the welder must hold and manually feed the stick.
    • Gas welding: A mix of flammable gas and oxygen is used to heat metal to the melting point.
    • Forge welding: Forging metal is an ancient art that involves heating two pieces of metal until they are molten, then hammering them together.

    How long is welding training?

Because there are different paths to learning to weld, there’s no single timeline for welding training. Some people attend school part-time while working their current job, while others can focus full-time on their welding training courses. People interested in learning how to weld as a hobby can also take classes from professional welders, such as at KCMA & Services in Waterloo, Indiana.

Expect to take at least two years to go from welding newbie to American Welding Society Certified Welder. A junior college Certificate of Completion welding course is two semesters full-time, or 10 units of coursework. With this certificate, students are qualified for an apprenticeship or internship, rather than a full-time entry-level job. Welding apprenticeships range from 6,000 to 8,000 hours long, equalling three to four years at 2,000 hours per year. Some junior colleges, such as Cerritos College in the Los Angeles area, offer more in-depth welding programs that lead to different welding certifications, such as arc welding and tungsten gas arc welding. These take three to four semesters to complete, so you could be qualified for an entry-level job in about two years of full-time study. Alternatively, you can prepare for employment more quickly through an intensive vocational program at a trade school. For instance, Ohio’s Lincoln Electric Company offers a comprehensive program that prepares people for a welding career in just 20 weeks and 600 hours of hands-on instruction.

Where can I take welding classes?

Your options for welding classes depend on where you live and whether you’re willing to travel. Many skilled professionals offer private or group welding classes across the U.S. Some high schools offer classes for teens, but many people learn from a private trainer or in a junior college or vocational school. Students learn basic welding, machining and fabrication processes, including using gas and arc welding equipment, and qualify for an apprenticeship or internship. Other colleges as well as vocational schools have two-year associate’s degree programs that prepare you to take the welding certification exam and seek full-time employment.

    How much is welding training?

The cost of welding training depends on where you take your classes and how quickly you want to complete the program. In general, junior college welding classes are the least expensive, but may take longer; trade schools offer intensive classes that lead to certification more quickly, but are more expensive. For example, Cerritos College, a junior college in Los Angeles that offers a welding training course, charges an average of $46 per unit; most of their welding certificate programs require 19 units of coursework, so cost about $875 each to complete. Pro-Weld, an on-site welding school in Idaho, offers three different welding courses. The 36-week welder fabrication and the 24-week gas tungsten arc welding courses each cost an average of $3,300, while pipe welding costs an average of $2,500 for a 24-week session or an average of $4,500 for a 52-week session. The 20-week comprehensive program at the Lincoln Electric Company in Ohio costs an average of $9,500. Many programs require students to purchase approximately $120-$200 worth of personal welding equipment in addition to textbooks or other class material fees.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
